Hey guys -- I was at the gym with my gf today and that something was very odd.... Her story...

5'4 118lbs, 20 years old... decent shape, genetically inclined, works out probably 2-3x a week, but takes weeks at a time off... well today she ran about 1.5 miles on a tread mill, then did some very light leg work and abs(about 30 minutes worth) then came up stairs with me and hopped on the elliptical with me, mind you -- plenty of recovery time... Well she hops on there and we start going and it says her heart rate is at 178!!! I thought that was very high, TO HIGH, i mean I understand if someone is going at a good pace for a good amount of time, it should be that high -- but it was from the get go... I mean, i played a basketball game bout 2 hours prior, then when I got to the gym with her -- I ran some back and forths shooting ball for about 30 minutes with small breaks... went and did a good workout of legs (4 sets of squat, 3 set of leg press, leg curl and calf raises)... then I hop on the elliptical and im at 138 to start...

I just want to make sure shes not dyin on me...

Thanks -- sorry about the long post!

Since she doesn't keep a regular pattern it may be that her recovery time is very slow. The more you keep up on your cardio health the better your body recovers. Plus some people just have higher HR than others.

Look for signs like red splotching, clammy skin, erratic breathing, gasping for air, etc.. Those are the signs that something very bad is about to happen.

I get like that sometimes to. When I first get on the machine my HR will sky rocket to 175 180 but after about 5-10 minutes on there it levels out

awesome -- thanks guys -- she does have some heart problems -- very minor, some costochondritis issue -- but the doc just told her to stop if it HURTS.. she said she wasnt hurting, but I told her to stop anyway cause I didnt know if it was ok or not that it was that high --

THanks guys

I believe the max heart rate formula is MaxHR = 220 - Age. I'm not sure if that is for both male and female.

Thats not very accurate, when i was 13, i got my heart rate to 218...

The 220 minus age is a general guideline. Plus 220-13=207 so that's not too far off from 218.
