Self Hypnosis

Is anyone really experienced with this?? I have done a little bit in the past but recently bought some books and tapes for further investigation. Mainly I want to use it as it relates to creativity and my job but I think it could be very useful as it applies to diet and training.
 
I use to be into self hynosis but I was always making me run around and cluck like a chicken or prance around nekkid on the neighbors lawn shouting "I'm an EMU!". So I gave it up and got into flinging large bags of popcorn at old ladies as they walked by the house.
 
How does that work, exactly?

Do you wave a pocketwatch in front of your own face, and say, "I'm getting VEEERRRY sleepy."

Project, basically the tape that I have now is 25 min long, you start with a series of relaxation techniques and then focus on a spot really high on the ceiling while counting backwards until your eyes get so heavy they have to close, then it takes you thru a series of visualizations and I guessing about 5 min in you lose track of everything and don't know what happened exactly until she wakes you up. Prior to starting you decide what you want to work on while you are under. It feels kind of like really intense daydreaming. The goal is that after practicing for a bit you will get to where you can take yourself in and out of this state very rapidly as needed.
 
I did a meditation thing that allowed me to visualize my races.
I didn't think it would work, but stuff that I didn't think I had remembered about them came up during it.
they taught us that at the OTC the year that I was there, and I recognized in my "dream" state that two of the guys that were there with me were the two guys behind me in this one race that I was visualizing - which then made me snap out of it and sit up, wanting to ask them if they were really there for the race (They were - they were the 2nd and 3rd place guys) - but everyone else was still out on their mats.
so I just sat there listening to the hum of the gym ventaliation system looking around at people not moving much.

I have studied hypnosis a fair amount. The problem with most tapes is that they are generalized, and are made to fit the entire population, so very few, if any, actually work or having lasting results. The best thing to do is to go and see a hypnotist a couple fo times, and then read all you can on self-hypnosis. There is not really a huge trick to hypnosis, you just have to know what to look for and which signals your body responds to.
 
I would love to see a hypnotist but I am at least 6 hours away from one so I am left with a do it yourself project. I agree that the tape is very generalized so we shall see. I may have to break down and drive that far in order to see someone.
