Second Annual Allegheny Valley YMCA's Strongest Man Contest:

Second Annual Allegheny Valley YMCA's Strongest Man Contest:
Strong for Helping Kids
NAS Silver Level Contest

On Saturday, September 26th, the Allegheny Valley YMCA will host its 2nd Annual Strongest Man Contest. The event is Activate America inspired, and will include challenges such as the Steel Log Lift, Farmers Walk, YMCA Husafell Stone Carry, Deadlift for Reps, and a NEW Strength of Character Hold. Strongmen who attend this popular event will have a great time and support a worthy cause: funds for free fitness classes to prevent childhood obesity in our community.

Activate America is the YMCA's response to our nation's growing health crisis. The YMCA is redefining itself and engaging communities across the country to better support Americans of all ages who are struggling to achieve and maintain well-being of spirit, mind and body. The Allegheny Valley YMCA is shifting how we focus all aspects of our work both inside and outside our YMCA to better engage health seekers. We define "health seekers" as all children, youth, teens, adults and families whose successful pursuit of health and well-being requires continuously supportive relationships and environments. The problem of childhood obesity is in the forefront of accomplishing the mission of Activate America.

According to the National Academy of Science, at present, approximately nine million children over 6 years of age are considered obese. The Mayo Clinic states that childhood obesity can lead to serious health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, asthma, sleep disorders, liver disease, skin infections, and a host of emotional problems including depression. The Allegheny Valley YMCA is prepared to prove that muscle is stronger than fat!

This year alone, the Allegheny Valley YMCA is flexing its muscles against childhood obesity by providing over 150 hours of free classes to over 200 overweight youths through our Youth Strength Training and Summer S.W.E.A.T. programs. Now it's your turn to show the power of spirit, mind, and body in building strong kids by participating or supporting the 2nd Annual Strongest Man Contest!
