my son brought home paperwork from college for all the available county scholarships.

some are completely out of the question, as you have to be a nursing student or female or over 23 or live in a certain town or county for example.

of the others, you either have to show that you have financial need, or that you're deserving.
For the financial need part of it, you have to submit the students and the parents tax returns (or your financial aide application).

we didn't apply for financial aide, and I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be considered for it.
As far as my son being deserving- he's a good kid but there's no tragedy or hardship or anything. the most I think we could write about is the death of his best friend a few months ago.

here's my question: would you make something up/elaborate, or would you forget about applying for any scholarship?

he's a white guy. Either you are going to pay for it, or he's going to take out loans to pay for it. I got half tuition for 2 years, but i dunno how. That was a while ago.

If he lives at home you would need to apply with both tax returns. I would definitly apply for financial aide. The application is so easy, even if you don't qualify for it, you wouldn't have wasted too much time. Also, you apply for many grants with the same application as financial aide. So, I would say do it.

Make something up? Definitly not. Just have him write about the things in his life that have shped him the most or affected him the most. I had alot to write about which is probably why I get scholarships. I was in 4 car accidents that others didn't survive and my husband was injured overseas while in the Army.

Do you have any immediate family that were in the military? Many people don't know this but, military benefits can transfer from grandfather to grandson or father to son if they are not used.

Always fill out the FAFSA.

GI Bill only transfers under the new post 9/11 bill and only to a child or spouse
there are sometimes scholarships through vfw's for family members of vets tho...

alter?

anyway...
late to be scholarship shopping if hes attending this semester...are u thinking of next yr?
applying for financial aid is free and not much of a hassle...and can be done online, google it.
I'd apply anyway, the same ap is needed for federally funded student loans anyway (stafford etc)
ask about school specific grants, most schools have a lot they don't advertise
and check out fastweb.com

step away from the porn/fleshlight trav

EF demands all of your attention

Send him to a black college, plenty of scholies for whitey there. Just don't surprised when he comes home for Christmas and says he wants to be called Mbutu because Skippy (or whatever you call him) is his slave name.

Barry and the boys are going to make it harder for families like yourself to make college affordable by reducing the number of subsidized loans and shifting that to more pell grants families that have 10 kids and feed off the system already. I dunno if ya'll would even qualify for subs loans anyway tho. You're fairly successful. My parents didnt qualify for subs loans when I went to college, but surprise.......they werent well off enough to help me pay for college anyway.

House Votes to End Subsidies to Student Loan Firms

By Nick Anderson
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, September 18, 2009

The Democratic-led House approved a bill Thursday that would overhaul college lending and spend tens of billions of dollars on student grants, community colleges, school construction and early childhood education.

The bill would end a program that subsidizes private lenders that provide federally guaranteed student loans. The government itself would make all such federal loans as of July 1, effectively cutting out banks and other lenders as middlemen. That would be a major shift because direct government lending in the last academic year accounted for about a quarter of federal loan volume.

Democrats have long sought to end the subsidized lending, and Republicans have fought to keep it. Democrats now have the upper hand because subsidies have become a ripe target in a time of public skepticism toward bankers. They say students would benefit from direct lending because the government offers a more reliable source of capital for loans at the same rates and terms as the guaranteed loan program.

Thursday's 253 to 171 vote, largely along party lines, moves the bill to the Senate. There, it faces more obstacles even though Democrats control the chamber, because senators sympathetic to the lending industry wield significant influence.

But the Obama administration is pushing hard for passage, in large part because the lending overhaul would free up an estimated $80 billion over 10 years for its education agenda.

Half that amount, or $40 billion, would flow to Pell grants under the House bill. Those are the main federal college scholarships for low- and moderate-income students. The maximum award would rise from $5,350 per student to $5,550 next year and eventually to $6,900 in 2019.The bill would index the grants to inflation starting in 2011.

Other spending provisions span a range of causes, from preschool to community college.

Republicans belittled the bill as a free-spending grab bag. "We can invest in students without crippling them with runaway entitlement spending," said Rep. Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.). He said the Republican alternative -- to keep the current lending system while studying reforms for a later date -- would avoid "a massive infliction of debt on future generations."

But Democrats easily defeated that proposal. "There's a huge difference between these two approaches on what to do," said Rep. Robert E. Andrews (D-N.J.). He rattled off goals the bill aims to accomplish: helping a returning veteran get a Pell grant in addition to GI benefits; easing the burden on community colleges, many of which are overwhelmed with new students; renovating schools where "they're taking classes in broom closets" and investing in reading and math programs for 4- and 5-year-olds.

Among other spending, the bill would provide:

-- $8 billion to help states improve a hodgepodge of early education programs from birth to kindergarten. The measure envisions a state grant competition akin to the new federal Race to the Top fund that is pushing states to reform public schools. In this case, the goal would be to raise the quality of child-care and preschool programs that often provide highly uneven educational results.

-- $10 billion for community colleges to renovate campuses, improve instruction and forge alliances with businesses and job-training programs.

-- $4 billion to modernize public schools over the next two years. Federal aid for school construction has long been a partisan flash point. Republicans say Washington has no business in school construction. Democrats say too many campuses are crumbling or outdated.

For students, the bill also would simplify paperwork. Many student advocates say the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is so cumbersome that it deters potentially eligible students from seeking Pell grants. The bill would streamline the much-maligned application form.

Four Democrats voted against the bill, and six Republicans voted for it. None of the 10 was from Maryland or Virginia. For Rep. Tom Petri (Wis.), one of the Republican mavericks, the vote was a milestone. He has advocated direct lending since 1983, a lonely position in his party.

"After years of explaining my approach," Petri said, "and years of defending direct loans from misleading attacks by the private student loan industry, we are an important step closer to settling the debate."

And the counselor will usually still talk to graduates.

I hope he's okay now. We appreciate his sacrifice.

Here is my experience on the college financial aid rollercoaster from a Mother 's point of view. Nothing is freely handed out. White males suffer the most in the "fast web" based scholarships. Second is white girls, where my experience is. Unless you have a particular something that fund seeks, forget it. You can find scholarships for every other ethnic group. Personally I think with your sons mixed heritage it would be a plus in the food chain. The trick is not to look for one big one, rather several smaller one. You as the parent are now on a quest (because I know my kid isn't going to do it) spending countless days, and weeks searching & searching . For me that was a big NOT.
Like you we had a plan. She did not live at home and her graduate work was done out of state. The only finanical aid she was able to receive in the 5-1/2 yrs it took to get her Masters was a small grant the State gives out to every 4-year student, and she always had a work study. Since I wanted her to be responsible, she incurred a $20,000 debit in subsized loans. The ending cost being roughly $150,000.
How does the fasfa play into this. Her subsized loan, work study and state grant would not have been available to her it we didn't fill out that form. BTW The first time around (because you have to do it every year) does take time to fill out. Thankfully it can all be done online and the information imports year to year.

One finally note, having student loans is not always a bad thing. Many companies and organizations will pay off their loans when they are employed. Beware.. habitat for humanity and the peace crops are impossible to get into.

The end..moving on to kid 2 lol
