Saw Palmetto: Is it worth it?

I've read on this board that some members take Saw Palmetto to protect the prostate. I am reluctant to take any OTC med/herb because the market is filled with so much hype. Does anyone here KNOW if Saw Palmetto will help protect the prostate from androgens and if so, what's an effective dose? Any feedback appreciated.

Some real good threads were up within the last week or so. One started something like "Let's settle this". The other one started something like "Who is telling people not to take saw palmetto?"

I recall that Stew Meat, Ulter, and myself posted on at least one of them, if that helps with a search.

Saw Palmetto is as effective as Finasteride, without as many side effects.

Saw and Finasteride have nothing in common. Finasteride blocks 5-alpha reductase, Saw Palmetto does not. Finasteride is useful with hairloss, Saw Palmetto does nothing for hairloss. Finasteride helps prostate and hair foliciles by lowering DHT levels; Saw Palmetto is only helpful in the prostate where it is an anti-inflamatory.
