Running Problems

Well, lately I've been really, REALLY laxed on working out. I play basketball 3 days a week for about an hour and thats it.

Earlier today I decided to try and ACT like I'm not fat and lazy and go running. I walked a lap to warm up, then stretched out for about 10 minutes. I ran (well, jogged at an easy pace) for about a minute and a half and my calf muscles started tighting up almost to the point of real pain. I stretched another 4 or 5 minutes then went at it again. After about 2 and a half minutes the pain came back worse than the first time, almost to the point of what felt like pulling both calf muscles. I walked some, tried to stretch it out again, then just called it quits.

WTF is up? ANy suggestions?

It's most likely from stretching cold muscles. One lap of walking isn't enough to get your leg muscles properly warmed up. And from what I've read and experienced, it's best not to stretch before you run. Warm up, run, and then stretch. That way your muscles are fully warm. Less likely to get injured. I used to stretch before running, but after trial and error, I wait until after my run.

tendions ....
does the front of your shin burn like fire and hurt so much that you need to release pressure from your leg to ease the pain?
if so.. sounds like a case of tendonitis = shin splints

if its shin splints.. go head to a doctor and get a gate analysis done...
you may have flat feet and may need some inserts for your shoes... I did... my shins ACHED when i ran... got my inserts and I don't EVER have problems anymore

my brother had something similar when he played rugby, his anterior (sp?) compartment was to small for the muscle leading to compartment syndrome or something

they took him into hopsital overnight, cut his shins open and cut out more space.

intense.

that sounds like the problem I have... I did some research on anterior shin splints. It seems to fit my problem well....

I don't know what to do now!!

snowboarding will cure shin splints....my tibia flexors are f'ing huge from years of it.

if you are overweight I would stick to lower impact hiit for a while until you are somewhat leaner and your shins can handle your bodyweight

Well, my shins rarely ever ache, only when I run on hard surfaces will they ever really bother me. It was very strange because back in the day I was running 4 days a week and never had a problem with any of it. I'll try the new warm up strategies though. Thanks guys!
