Roy Jones is done

He looked like shit the entire fight and it ended withhim being knocked the fuck out and not even moving for a couple minutes b/c he hit his head so hard on the canvas. I seriously doubt we will see Jones fight again. :(

in boxing terms that means we'll see him at least two more times.

I sure hope not.It was heartbreaking for me to watch. He got beat up and knocked completely out into a temporary seizure-His arms and head were shaking, then he actually went to sleep. He had a severe concussion.Makes me sad to see such a once gifted fighter being hurt so badly and so vulnerable to punishment he would have never taken even a couple of years ago.He has a ton of money and property,he really needs to retire before he ends up with permanent brain damage.

this was embarassing to watch as a roy jones fan. he's a shell of his former self. he definately should never fight again

I actually began to feel sorry for him, but then I remembered that he’s a millionaire. LOL. Seriously though; he looked horrible and the incessant “mugging for the camera” was quite pathetic considering his performance in the ring.

But here’s the REAL question for you. Do you think he was really as good as everybody (myself included) thought he was? No question he was good, VERY good, but considering his last two fights, do you still think he deserves to be considered one of the all time Greats?

I never liked him in the first place. I'm not a boxing fan and I especially despize athletes that lack humility no matter how good they are.

He’s pretty arrogant but I’ve watched a few interviews where he seemed somewhat humble, mentioning the Lord and all of that. Might’ve been an act, I don’t know, but I’ve always like him. I’m just not so sure—given the talent he faced—that he deserves to be considered as one of the all time greatest pound for pound fighters.

Wow! They say once a fighter has been beat, sometimes he's never the same. Was this on HBO? I'm pissed that I missed it. Our next heavyweight champ might be a 5'9" little badass by the name of James Toney. Hits like a mule and has very fast hands.

Yep,HBO.And I agree,Toney looked sharp the other night against his undefeated opponent. He has the chin,offense/defense,and the ATTITUDE.Hell,he was ready to fight Chris Byrd and a few of the fans in the crowd after the fight, lol. The guy is always intense.

Roy Jones Jr. is finished....without speed, he's just an average fighter at best. It happens to the best of them....age will ruin a guy who relies on speed faster than a guy who has great power more often than not.

I don't think that these losses do anything to lessen Roy Jones Jr.'s legacy, however. He was a dominant, entertaining fighter for a long time....he's not the only guy to hang around for a fight or two too long. Muhammad Ali was shit at the end....nobody questions whether or not he was one of the alltime greats.

I think what made him so great was he was so unique in the way he fought. He was so much faster then everyone he fought. He never relied on power or even fought behind the jab. Well the speed is the 1st thing to go for a boxer and we have seen it leave Roy Jones Jr. tonight. This night doesn't take away from his greatness for me. Ali got destroyed by Larry Holmes at the end but it didn't make Ali any less great. I did have a bit of problem with how much of a beast they made Jones in the Fight Night game but oh well. It was a pleasure watching him fight all these years. And I think Lennox Lewis does deserves more credit then he got for leaving the heavyweight divison on top.

Roy Jones was beat silly in this fight. There was not a single moment in the fight where he resembled the Roy Jones of the past. I had it scored 7 rounds to 1 in Johnson's favour going into the ninth round. I agree with one of the above posts that Roy is actually only an average fighter if you take away his speed. Roy has no jab, no chin, and he tends to be manhandled by his opponents because he is not the strongest guy around. Also, Roy is not a big power puncher as well. He has decent defense because he takes a lot of punches. Fighters are catching on now and know that to neutralize Jones' speed you have to fight him on the inside and pound away. Roy Jones is done.

Trinidad vs Mayorga is going to be one hell of a fight! Can't wait for that. I hope Trinidad wins because I can't stand that cocky S.O.B. Mayorga.

Bah I never like Trinidad. I get a kick out of Mayorga b/c he's such an entertainer. Honestly though, I don't think either has much of a chance against Hopkins

Mayorga is great, the guy is just a tough SOB.I love how he said he's going to deliberately let Trinidad punch him in the face to show him that he cannot hurt him.I don't know if that's a good idea, but it's enough to make anyone root for his toughness, lol.I hope Mayorga wins.

That sounds about right.

Remember, De La Hoya had Trinidad beaten until he coasted the last three rounds of that fight. Mayorga has the balls and the power to finish Tito.....sad as it is......I thought Tito should have retired after he won the De La Hoya fight. TIto has nothing really to gain, and more to lose.

ESPN doesn't have access to the clips because it is pay per view or whatever, so they always show still frames from the fight.

<<<<<<<<,
You're correct....Mayorga is 100% tough SOB. Saw him once....thought he was a little "cocky" at first. Then I realized that he was just young and drunk! Never saw him smoke a cigarette though. He has an unbelievable training routine and is a dedicated fighter (although the press does not portray him as such).

Roy was a dissapointment last night! I would say that during his whole career that he was an average to above average fighter. He was never truly tested as he "hand-picked" his opponents. Now that he is getting up in age, his speed is consequently sacrificed. Additionally, he no longer packs a power punch compared to others in that division. From this point forward, he should stick to commentating, real estate investing, and his promotion company. This will do him more good in the long run!

Enjoy!

Yeah,HBO ran with the "sloucher" thing, but you can tell he comes in shape. The greatest thing was when he fought Vernon Forrest(fresh off Forrest's destruction of Shane Mosely)and everyone thought that Forrest was just way too skilled for him.He actually invited Forrest to hit him, then countered him and knocked him into La-La Land.Machismo personified.

He has guts, heart, and packs an awesome punch for his weight! Will this be enough to win???? Not sure but I like his chances.

PS: Won a little money from the Forrest fight! :artist:

LOL!That's the greatest thing about the fight game, you can never count anyone out,and betting on the underdog can paybig dividends on occasion, hehheh.

I like James Toney over Klitchko. They keep talking about how the heavyweight division is evolving into a huge man's game, but I'm not buying it. The only real big great heavyweight has been Lennox Lewis and he was knocked out twice. Speed and power will prevail more often than not over the lumbering giants.

mayorga freakin smokes cigarettes in the ring right after his fights are over. they guy doesn't have a great deal of boxing skill, but he can punch and sometimes thats enough to win

Roy Jones jr has to be one of the greatest, it not the greatest pound for pound fighter. He just moved up in weight class to soon, if he wouldn't of been bored at dominating everyone at the super middle weight level he would still seem unstoppable.

I must say though that god works in mysterous ways, and Jones has got his payback from Vinny(the tazz) pazzienza.

Anyone remember that fight?

Vinny used to be one of my heros when I used to box, to see a fighter who was told he would never walk again step into the ring. I remember all the trash talk between Vinny and Jones, and Jones said he would punish him and not knock him out. That is exactly what Jones did, he punished Vinny so bad and put him into retirement. I came to love Jones, but I believe god has paid him back.

Virgil Hill (light heavy weight) was a on and off coach when I trained in North Dakota. Once I saw the cheap shot that Jones landed on Hill when he was down I lost total respect for jones.

...but he doesn't inhale. It makes all the difference! :rasta:

If I got his purse at the end of the fight....hell I'd smoke too!

Enjoy!

First off, let me say that Roy Jones is probably the best pound for pound fighter we will see in our generation. Unmatchable speed, and reflexes. Sure he may have got old now, but in his prime he was unbeatable. Literally. Beat the so called #1 pound for pound fighter Bernard Hopkins who hasnt lost in 11 years since JOnes beat him. He beat James Toney for gods sake. Boxing is what i live for even more than weightlifting. I've sat and analized fights over and over and i never miss a big fight.

Roy is the best fighter we will ever see fight in our lifetime. Have any of these middleweights try to go up to heavy and beat a top 10 fighter. Never gonna happen, they can't , Roy did.

Oh and P.S. that body shot on Virgil Hill was no cheap shot.

Anyone know if hbo is going to show the fight again?

if you have hbo2, they usually show the replays on tuesday nights, maybe like 11 pm. maybe even regular hbo will show the replay tuesday night, but i don't think so.

I don't know what fight you saw then.

The judges and ref sure seemed to think it was a cheap shot, and especially since he was disqualified(LOST).

You can't hit someone once they are down just because they are pissing you off in the ring.

That wasn't Virgill Hill Brother, that was Montell Griffin.Roy knocked Virgil Hill out with a right hook to the body.

You're right bro, I don't know why for all this time I thought it was Hill.

I think it was because Roy fought Griffin back to back and I was anticipationg the Hill fight. I was in the Army then and I didn't always get correct info what was going on in the sports world.

No big deal mang,I knew who you were thinking about, and yeah, that was definitely a dumb shot by Roy.The guy was on a knee, and he clobbered him while he was totally defenseless.
