Ripped pec

New member
Some of you may remember when I posted about ripping my left pec while benching back in June. Yeah too much dbol and the muscles weren't ready. Well I've stayed away from training the chest ever since and it still hasn't healed up. Any suggestions would help. Thanx

go see a surgeon and get an MRI , if your lucky it may be adhesions or scar tissue if your still having pain . What was the situation with your injury ?

You tore your pec in June and now your interested in having it fixed? Come on common sense should have had you at the Doc in June. You may have needed surgery and now the elapsed time can complicate recovery. WTF?

Hey Mike, I remember when you posted that over the summer. Didn't you say you went to a doc and had an MRI done?

What do you mean it hasn't healed up? Does it hurt all the time or only under strain? If it hurts all the time you could have some problems. If it only hurts while training it could be scar tissue like one of the other guys said. Warm up real good, try some stretching and keep the weights light.

Get to the doc or you'll be staying away from lifting for a long time. This stuff can last years. U need to have the level of damage assessed and see if u need any surgery or rehab. Surgery can be a good thing here...it can fix it almost to 100%. I've read some studies where a surgery done 11 yrs after the injury was able to help the patient get most of the scar tissue out and was at about 95% of what he used to be. It's for u to take that first step and get your ass over to a doc.

Here's the facts..
I Tore my pec years ago right off the bone(humerous). It was what is called a major pec tear which sounds to be what you have. I too thought it was just a minor tear and that it would heal up as that is what my doc told me. BUT, he didn't perform an ultrasound on it so me being stupid listened to him.
About 2 months later after I realized it wasn't getting ANY better I went to see a specialist who ordered the Ultra Sound which shows a complete tear of the pec major (which means the tendon tears off of the bone, muscle connects to tendon, tendon connects to bone) Without the tendon there your pec cannot contract. The pec curls up in a ball so to speak with the tendo left dangling.
Now after about 3 months I was lead to the local surgeon who told me it had been to long a wait and the scar tissue was too much for the surgery to be a success.
THAT IS THE BIGGEST BUNCH OF BS YOU WILL EVER HERE SO IF THEY TELL YOU THAT GO FIND ANOTHER SURGEON.

That is what I did and sure enough he tells me that it just makes the surgery harder on him because they have to get through the scar tissue and it takes longer. But luckily he did it and as of now I have about 75%-80% of my strength back and it still keeps getting better. It's been over a year since my surgery. THe wait for the surgery after all the screwing around was 1.5 years!!!\
BUT i'm alot better than I was as before my pec would hurt too much to even do 135 pounds! Now i'm repping 225 for an easy 12.

I still plan on writing that original surgeon that looked at me and telling him he's a disgrace to the medical field.

contact another surgeon ASAP and get that taken care of. It sucks , but the sooner the surgery , the sooner youll be back to normal .

Good luck .

Thanx for your replies, yes I've seen the doc immediately after the inury. It's not in pain at all, only when I work out. I can bench the 45lb bar w/ no problem, but damn I used to do 335lbs for 6. I'll have to see a better doc then.

Its been about 5 months now and if you're only benching the bar, you have some serious problems.

Just like Flex Bailey, I also tore my left pec tendon right off the bone almost a year ago while benching. It was horrible and I could actually hear it make a tearing sound like velco. Then the bar dropped like a ton of bricks. I saw an orthopaedic doc as soon as possible, got an MRI and had the surgery within a week and a half.

Rehabing it was pure hell. To this day I still feel a little pain while heavy benching, probably from scar tissue. The pec doesn't quite "look" right but its functional. I've worked my way back up to a 275lb bench for a few reps. I tore it while benching 405.

Good luck Mike and drop me a line if you have any questions.

I tore my pec two months ago.I've been put on the list for surgery. It'll probably take place about one month from now.
Actually, the MRI didn't show actual detachment from the bone and surgery was deemd impossible but I knew better as I can feel the loose tendon at the armpit.I requested a second opinion and the other doc just put me up for surgery.

I'm curious of what drugs the other guys who tore muscles here were on at the time of injury?I was on d-bol and winstrol and was feeling stronger than ever.

I too heard a loud ripping sound.makes you sared of heavy weights for sure...

torn pec

Hi guys (first post),

Sorry to all you chaps who've torn your pecs.... I'm sad to say I joined the gang two weeks ago.

I've got about a 95% tear, not all the way through, and the tear is actually in the muscle, not at the tendon - muscle junction so it apparently is a worse type (harder to treat).

Does anyone know of any surgeons in the UK who have treated this sort of injury? The two consultants I've seen so far simply don't have the first idea about this injury. SO DEPRESSING.

Thanks for any help lads.

Daz

I really feel for you. I had a partially torn pec. It took a long time to recover. My chest is still tight becuase the tear was right in the muscle junction.

Hope everything works out.

Yes, a complete muscle tear is actually worse than a tendon tear. The tendon, once re-attached should be just as strong as it originally was. My doc also said at the time that a tear like this should be repaired as quickly as possible for a better chance of recovery. I was told that with the tendon tear, I would only get back maybe 80-90% of the strength I originally had. Its been about a year and I'm guessing I'm at about 85%. I feel I can push it harder but I'm going to take it nice and slow. This injury happened while on a sust/dbol/EQ cycle.

Just a reminder, if you feel you're getting too strong while on a cycle, you probably are. I know its hard because the weights feel so damn light and you just keep pushing them rep after rep but next time just back off a little. Muscle or tendon tears are no fun.
:(

Another thing I remember the doc telling me about complete muscle tears was that its like trying to sew peices of spaghetti together. There are so many tiny strands of muscle that its a very tedious time consuming operation.

A tendon tear is fairly simple in comparison. Its just a matter of re-attaching the tendon to the bone. He said tendon quad tears are pretty common but its rare that he's see's torn pec tendons or muscles.
