Ok, so I busted the damn wall down myself. Six hours with a 16lb sledge and a 12lb electric chipper. Then I carted the shite out myself. What a massively satisfying expedition that was! I want to go knock something else down!

Tore out the parket floor and the horror-show vinyl flooring they left under it... I hate that kind of shit... but I am down to the finishing concrete. Jam.

Tonight the plumber is drawing the lines on the concrete so I can cut the spiral channels for the hot water lines that will heat the floor. That is among the most manly saws I have ever seen. Can't wait to use it.

Oh, going to sand down the finish on all the cabinets in the kitchen and follow the Sugarplum Whitewash method for the whole kitchen. I finally got the approval from Mrs. Chef on replacing the counter-tops (currently they are heinous off-white formica) and adding the new fridge and gas range/oven combo that has a wickedly cool rotissery set up built in... schwing.

Still not completely sure about the oven/fridge choices, but the product above is some really solid stuff.

Next, its tile choice time for the backsplash all around and the floor:

HELP!

Picture the whitewash cabinetry, stainless oven/range/splash/hood setup. I like a glass greenish/grey mosaic for the backsplash and maybe a terracotta for the floor?

Please advise.

Damn!

Must be the half pound of concrete dust that I inhaled.

I couldn't cook on something called a SMEG..

Did you cut yourself a then just let it bleed all over your power tools, looking all
Johnny Rambo when Mrs Chef came in ?

Then when she acted all concerned you could say

"Woman, I aint got time to clean up blood"

Damn Chef, Heaven sounds delapidated in shit. Are you sure thats where you were?

Your jewish right? How the hell did you even get in bor.

Im calling bullshit on this thread

Damn nice fridge and range, especially the range. I have a black double wall oven and range top right now with a white fridge, but it goes well with the dark stained wood cabinets and white counter tops. Eventually I want to go all stainless though, and replace the counters with something newer and less 70's. In ten years, my kitchen will look completely different.

But first I need to get new carpets, install central air, re-build the retaining walls out back, build the deck out back and put the hot tub there, re-stucko the walls out by the garage (or stone face them, haven't decided yet), extend the house roof over half of the front deck, re-plank the front deck........

No problem, the reason you had trouble recognising it: Jewish heaven doesn't include any trailerparks.

Showing a pic of what I just got would get me banned.

Are those saws the same one`s used for cutting concrete outside? If so, I wish you luck bro, you`re gonna need a lot of water and a good mask. When they`re cutting outside it`s gotta have a hose directly on the dust to keep down the white smoke/dust. I`ve rarely seen them used indoors.

I have cut my share of crete outdoors, it's a nasty, nasty thing. I used to work for a construction company in Western Mass in the 80s, we did mostly road work and bridge work. I had crete on the brain.

There is a 2 to 2 1/2 " layer of porous finishing cement on all the internal floors in the house, called a 'float' in Icelandic, not sure about the english term, that makes all the floors perfectly level. It's an expensive addition but it's the norm here.

I will be using a dual blade chanel saw on the floor, which kicks up a fuck off dust storm, true, but the one I am renting has a HUGE industrial vacuum cleaner attached to it that reduces the dust by about 90%. I have hung and taped .1 plastic sheeting to completely air tight the kitchen but for the window which will remain open. Concrete Dust masks have already been purchased for the sawing I did on the edges of the wall I slamped.

The only major problem is that I have to clean. I wish the old 'I cook, you clean' thing worked for all of life..

remolding heaven - that's an oxymoron.

One of my clients just called me and said she wants to change the color of her house. No biggie right? Wrong. It's peach/pink stucco with green powder coat trim and spanish roof tiles on the ocean. God help me.

p.s. Please don't use terracotta.

Try slate form India/ pacific rim for the floors. It's rich, deep has a lovely variation of color. Comes in a variety of sizes and finishes and works with most rooms and styles. (make sure they seal it right and you see the color of tile before it is sealed because it will change)

For the back splash look for glass mosaic tile that is either metallic or shinny to offset a floor that has an earthy matte finish. If you choose to go glossy on the floors try a frosted/matte glass mosaic tile.

It sure sounded like a manly endeavour until you mentioned Sugarplum Whitewash.

lol,
i'm not a big lover of whitwash- i don't have one thing whitewashed in my own house- chef asked how to do it and i told him, thats all.

I suppose that I will be sealing it, as I am laying the tile, it's as close to getting layed as I get.

I will seal one tile first and let it cure before I commit just to be sure.

I saw some tremendous slate tiles yesterday, with a hint of verdigris almost like an iridescence. There were some with a brick red feel that came through the charcoal overall, Very rich. My only fear is that with how long and dark the winters are here, I might go for something brighter... going tile hunting this afternoon as well, will see what turns up.

I love the metalic grey glass tiles that were up on display, almost looked like a translucent hematite (sp). No go with Mrs. Chef, however, and not worth the battle.

Right now the backsplash is bone white 15x15cm tiles with oddly placed stenciled old tymie kitchen gear on some. Looks like a very bad rendition of wood block 1850s illustrations. Barf.

You and the Mrs. sound like half my clients.

I love the one where one mate will torture and starve out the other until he/she gets their way, now that makes my life unpredictable and exciting.

You could make my life a bit unpredictable and exciting by torturing me a bit, but the starving thing is right out.

I am pretty jazzed about going for the 90cm range... I really wanted the 150 but that would eat damn near the whole kitchen... much like me on a mako-like carbing frenzy.

Any tile sealing advice? One compound better than another? things to watch out for?

:chomp: GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

All I can say is make sure it is DRY and very CLEAN before you seal and the company "porous plus" makes a great product.

Five hours. Five hours of my life looking at tile.

I need sex and Jack Daniels, lather, rinse, repeat.

Is there a site that lets you mix and match cabinet finishes/backsplash/countertop finishes to see some combinations? I need it bad.

the HORROR!

Make it stop, MAKE IT STOP!

We went to a place that has about 2500 different tiles, from $20 for a 30*30cm to $250 for a 10*10.

Oh, the hand cut mosaic section has no prices on them, just a 'see sales person for current prices'... of course, thats what I want...

I am Job, the crippled decorator.
