Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

That's a good read. Thank you. Still I know that MD's spend very little time understanding what we know for bodybuilding and fitness purposes as well.

Again though, I suggested not having carbs after a certain point. Protein and fats are still an option for creative eating. And a nice multiblend protein shake will keep a slow release of aminos while asleep.

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

So to recap... As long as cals are maintained for the day...
Rule of thumb keep carbs around training and upon waking.. Preferably keep them earlier in the day unless training late.

So if you train late at night... carbs afterwards. At that point does that matter then what the carb is? I'm not talking junk either.

I love discussions!!

Bunny thanks!! I'm on my 3rd qt. just guzzled some more.

you suggest eating fats at bedtime but no carbs??

I know *why* - ie - casein protein - slow leak of nutrients etc

why no carbs??

Knowing that growth and repair occur when you sleep - as its the most anabolic hours of the day - why would you cut carbs then??

if you can eat fat and protein(total cals in mind of course) - you can eat carbs as well....there is no biochemical reason not to

Easy carbs - meal 1 and PWO - no fats
other carbs - complex no fats if possible

before bed - complex(or simple if its immediately after weights as they is zero chance of storing that as fat)

O.k. so for example not to sound like a complete idiot....
I go to the gym at 9:00 hit weights.. The optimal meal for me would be whey protein and power ade. O.k. this leads me to the next question... Now that I'm training that late at night should that affect the amount in grams I take in?!?
So would I alter my carb post work-out intake vs. the time of day?!

I suggest as an energy alternative yes. You can infact train the body ala ATKINS to burn the fats. Does this mean eat SPAM? No. Obviously the amount still would be low regardless.

Most people get more than enough carbs. The glycogen replinishment has been more than fulfilled toward the evening in general unless there are training concerns. The pancrease releasing insulin isnt a bad thing as well know but having too many carbs most likely already in the diet would just result in fat storage. Granted some muscle cells to absorb some of the sugars but the fat cells do as well.

O.k. so someone explain to me then why my body fat increased?!?! All I eat before bed is fat and protein, hardly no carbs at my meal prior been this way for the past.

Here's actual stats for you:
Sept 17th after trip to Hungary jumped on 1800 cals, at a 40/30/30
Oct 22nd switched intake to 2100 cals at 50/28/22
Nov 12 switched to 2200 cals at 50/28/22
Dec 10 same 2200 cals 50/28/22

I realize SBT is new at BF measures by way of calipers but this is what I was at AND pictures show the difference in fat: (yes this is just done to track)

Sep 17th 151 pounds roughly 25%
Oct 22nd 155 pounds 21.8%
Nov 12th 158 pounds 21.4% (This looked the biggest drop in fat)
Dec 10th 160 pounds 21.8% (I look the same here as I did BF wise Oct 22nd)

So I was at a 40/30/30 and yes automatically dropped weight because off from junk. My way to increase cals was to increase the protein and fat macros' over the carbs. (Future's way of thinking and what I thought at that point) So since I switched to this initially I saw a drop but now I'm stabilizing in doing so I have had no BF loss, only some BF gain.
Cardio has maintained the same amount of cals to burn the whole time.
My weight program is the best so I'm not concerned there ;) Diet has been a clean bulk. Food same pretty much all the time, and I have SBT for back up on that.

Shadows = go back to 2,000 cals at 40/30/30
Future = Says ?!?!

If I drop carbs like Future suggests lower carbs I should be dropping fat but not what my stats show.. CONFUSED over here about all this...

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

So you'll wake up slightly depleted, ensuring that carbs you eat during the day are stored as glycogen rather than fat. Many also reccommend morning cardio, which synergystically works with the carb cutoff if you do it before eating carbs (you might have a protein shake, then do some cardio, then get back and eat a bunch of carbs to refill yourself). plus you're not going to use carbs at night anyways (usually), so it makes sure that you aren't overloading with carbs when you're already full, which usually leads to fat gain.

It works well. I find that separating energy carbs and fiber carbs also helps to make sure I get in all my veggies and fiber.

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

I would have about 50% of your diet as protein. Increase water if not already doing so. Add green tea to your diet as its a natural thermogenic. Carbs well. Depends on the glycemic index as well. First meal and after training still might need a mid gly carb. Hard to tell because I dont know everything about how you train etc. That is something to question at this point as well.

As far as glycogen replenishment - theres no way to tell that is there??

I would think that a late workout would drain glycogen, yes??

As you know, there is very very little chance of cals getting stored as fat after a wokout.

You alluded to the fact that carbs late at night will somehow pile on fat....

Funny thing about Atkins - Protein is converted DIRECTLY to glucose(on very low-zero carb diets) via cleaving off a Nitrogen group...so the body will convert on an as needed basis...

bottom line:

Eating carbs after 6pm will NOT IMPACT fat loss as long as total cals are kept in line.

that is not an opinion.

It's JUST like saying not to eat protein after 10am, its just an arbritary rule that has no scientific basis.......it originated YEARS ago.....the crux of the point is that cals eaten late in the day dont have the "opportunity" to be burned off, hence they are more likely to be stored as fat etc etc etc.

On an excess calorie diet - I would agree with that statement.

On monitored cals it simply isnt true.....

You didnt address my point.....that being why do you suggest eating fats and protein late in the day but not carbs????

That implies that total calorie levels do not matter.

Water has increased over the past 2 months to 6-8 qts.. I was drinking roughly 2 qt's at the beginning of this time.
Green tea I use in a cut. It's one of the things I keep for that time.
I thought you saw the plan when SBT was there?!?! Which is why you suggested that she should switch to your training plan.....

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

Confusion grows!!!
I workout early 6 a.m.
Before weights I eat egg whites/protein-raw oats/carb almonds
Have kept no fat post workout AGAIN egg whites/protein-raw oats/carb
Before bed I have been eating egg whites and ANPB...I try NOT to eat carbs after 4:00
p.m. Sometimes it seems to work sometimes bloat...

Easy:

1 - you increased TOTAL CALORIES.......it would not have mattered had you eaten carbs and protein as opposed to protein and fat(assuming total cals were the same)....more than you were burning

2 - Dropping carbs has a direct impact on the following:

a - anabolic state
b - increased catabolism
c - drop in recovery time
d - drop in natural thyroid output
e - metabolic rate

and to a lesser extent

3 - other issues

a-e are backed by scientific fact.

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

So just got back from first physical therapy appontment.

I've had WAY to much shit go on in the past week. I didn't even know this lady and I broke down crying on her for at least 5 minutes. Like a stupid baby... and she was at a loss but tried to console me.
Found out my back is just jacked. She is going to help me though and showed me some new stuff. My pelvis is torqued, I knew this, my stupid disc is slipping found out 2 weeks ago, and I have no flexibility and I am wearing down my L5. She asked me twice how old I was because she said that I should not be sleeping on a heating pad for 4 months. I was way to young for that.

So besides that No SBT I have not eaten I have no appetite but it looks good if I were hungry....

Found out for sure I owe the military back money that I shouldn't.. and my school is pissed that they worked their financial department the way they did, and my taxes doubled for winter this year, and I have IDIOTS behind the scenes messing with people and ahhh ...
I just turned my thread into a bitch thread :worried:

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

Can I just delete the last 10 -12 posts?!? lol
Eh I guess it's part of the journey.

Not much else really to add right now. SBT and I are taking the week off which was very much needed and welcomed.. well to me anyway.
Spent the night.. o.k. evening at Barnes and Nobles coming up with a game plan up to the B and T show. Have SBT's and my next 4 week strength cycle lay out figured out. Working on fine tuning it. We start that on Christmas day.
Now I'm deciding what to do with the rest of the weeks till show time. Have a few friend's (Thanks Bun's) and my ex-trainer who I am meeting with this week who also is going to put a plan together for me. I need to get this all out on paper.. JAN-MAR my head is in the school and I have to put classes together and will be traveling to see Buns a few times, the Arnold, and another show in Ohio. Don't need cortisol spikes any more then what they are going to be.
SBT has put together my diet for the next 4 weeks  she also has been reading away.
Way to many opinions out there about what to do and what not to do.. and the only way I guess I'm going to see what works and what doesn't is to keep on with trial and error. Hopefully...lol... I at least get a few non-error's along the way.
I will be posting more come Jan. when this thread will be revamped T-Style...

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

++++++ Vibes for a better week Treil

edit: post update wasn't there before! lol...sneaky-sneaky.

Mood = Great
Soreness = Rt hip, upper back

Just got done at Physical Therapy. Yup 6:30a.m appointment. More movement through the spine now, legs evening out, and torque is dissipating in the pelvis region.
At least there is eye candy to watch that early in the morning, :lmao:
Makes it a easier to be in a great mood while I'm there. I go again tomorrow A.m. as well. Talking with my PT and she suggested I apply there since they are opening a 3,000 sq ft massage floor. Found out the owner is :qt: and not married. I'm waiting though till Jan to figure out what I'm going to do. I go to a 9/80 schedule here so who knows. Maybe I'll have 3 jobs while training for a competition... I really like going there though because I learn about different approaches and methods.

Week off from the gym and yet nothing considered 'junk' even sounds tempting. I have a work Christmas lunch and even there I know I'm getting a chicken salad. Yup silly me. Yesterday was a huge building bring food in for the holiday, walk around and eat, and I ate nothing but the chicken I brought. It just doesn't even look good to me or tempt me. Yesterday at the school again a bunch of food... I took a taste of PB fudge and bleh.. tasted like biting into sugar so spit it out behind the scenes. I did eat the venison though!!!

I think that's it... ;)

I hear ya' on the work parties! We had -- in the last 6 days of school before Holiday Break -- FIVE parties! Some days were lunches.. some days were breakfast... ALL of the days were all-out feasts.

I'm with you -- it just didn't look that good! I mean, now when I cheat on my cheat days... it's GREAT food. My Secret Santa gave me these chocolates -- I had one serving because she raved about them... fitday'ed them... and tossed the rest out. Meh -- they were OKAY... but not my Swiss chocolate! Just not worth it! :qt:

Good to see you're taking care of yourself. :D

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

DEC 21 2006
Mood = Calm/Good
Soreness = Rt hip (seems to be where all the work at PT is being done)

6:30a PT My L5 joint is now working a lot better and working with the other vertebrae. Sacrum a bit torqued still and so is L3 and L4 a tad. Have some stretches and stuff to do. Next appointment is next week. Waking up though with less pain, going to bed with less pain, and have way more flexibility just from 4 visits! Haven't slept on the heating pad at all this week ;)

My therapist is showing me a few new techniques called Strain and Counterstrain, as well as a new one today called Mulligan (I thought it sounded funny). She also recommended a bunch of different classes held here in state that would help even more with me interests in the area. I did speak with the director at the school and she said if I wanted to I could put together classes and add that on at the school for continuing education credits for graduates and other therapists in the area. We'll see since each course is roughly $450 per weekend and that's just not going to be happening till later in the 2007 year. Also, another 5 day course held at MSU for OD's that costs $1200 and is all about maunual therapy and then they have other courses like lymph drainage, etc. I can work into. I have to have credits anyway so I my as well take them with a purpose in mind. I would also like to take me national certification test. It's not required since there is no state licensure but it looks way more credible as a therapist.

So figuring out my 2007 goals and resolutions already... Never seem to have a problem coming up with them, it's always narrowing them down...

DEC 26 2006
Mood = Tired and only 1 at work all day with a bunch of broken comps I needed to work on but they got fixed.
Weight ?
Soreness = Quads, Hams, and calves but glutes and ham tie in's are the worse!!!! Abs a bit, and shoulders from doing the front squats I'm sure. So far back is doing fine no issues... I have another deep massage scheduled for thursday so he'll definitely get some kinks out!!

It's so much easier having someone type up the weight routine because then all I have to do is go and copy it out of her log and paste it over here :lmao:

This was monday's leg routine:

Front Squat (tempo 301) (6 x 135)(1 x 155)(6 x 145)(1 x 155)(10 x 115)(15 x 95)
Bulgarian Split Squat (SS)(tempo 311) (10 x 115)(9 x 120)(10 x 125)
Step Ups w/DB's (SS)(tempo 311) (10 x 50) x 3
Back extensions (tempo 222) (10 x 25) (10 x 35)
Seated calf raises (tempo 222)(8 x 100)(8 x 105)(8 x 110)(8 x 115)(10 X 115)(11 X 115)
Vacuums w/lats (3 x 2 min, 15 sec rest between each and holding front pose and standing relaxed poses in mirror adjusting)

First week I dropped the rest from 30 seconds to 15 seconds on vacuums and I was shaking like crazy trying to hold them.

Today was my day off.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!!!

DEC 28 2006

Mood = Calm
Weight = 162 (The most I ever weighed in my life) :lmao:
Soresness = Calves, hams, glutes, shoulders, back, abs.. I'm just friggen sore from monday! Last 2 nights waking up with this soreness...

Tonight is upper body and abs... Waiting for SBT to type it all up so I can copy it in, LOL

Notes:
-PT this morning. It has been a week since I have been there. Lumbar was rotated to the right again. So had to do some manual stuff to move it back. I think it's probably been like that for years' because it likes to go back to it. I also noticed it in my posing pictures last year. PT was pressing around releasing knots in the sacrum and got to my Ham tie in and said "WOW does that hurt?" I started laughing and said,"Yeah but I did that to myself at the gym!"
-Appetite was ridiculous yesterday and this morning stomach was going nuts and I ate and it's still doing it's thing... Need to focus on water intake. The past week it has dwindled.....
-I'm kinda weighing options as to what I want my physical goals to be next year. Obviously the competition in May... but this past year I feel like the weight room has just tore my body up. Do I want to continue doing this?!? Every day I have some chronic, and acute pain... I mean I'm already going to gain some pain with age but I seriously feel like I shouldn't be in this much pain all the time. I had less pain when I ran marathon's.... Yeah 26.2 miles of hard running on dirt surfaces. Not the body I want and I already did that goal so definitely not going back. I think the best I ever felt was when I first joined EF 2 years' ago. I was doing different types of yoga and pilates 5 day's a week, and running 1 at the most maybe 2 days. I had a lot more flexibility, less pain, felt good, was eating o.k.... wasn't eating enough, and obviously did not have the 'athletic' looking body I wanted.
Then if I go to the gym and have no DOMS I feel like I wasted my time. So to just go and go through the motion does not excite me. Nor does this LSD cardio crap. Although it is easier on the joints and bones. I'm 27 and every time I move I crack, and pop. This just doesn't seem right.
I'm getting way more massage then I've ever had in my life and I still can't get a body part to stop... I actually felt less pain during my cut last year when my weights began to drop, and my strength began to dwindle, and I was doing my cardio sessions. Yeah I'm mentally about ready to cut again. I'm just not sure what I want to do after I cut this time around.
I miss my Tae Bo, step classes I use to do.... Playing softball and golf every spring summer and fall. All of this I gave up. My social life :lmao: all I have to say... Is non-existant. I have lived, breathed, and dreamed about food, weight training, dieting, not getting enough muscle, posing some more then other's for the past 2 years'.
I have definitely got more muscle then I started... but I want to plateau already! I want to get the muscle attached to the leg and be able to maintain what I first was out to achieve = an athletic looking body.
So... with all of that.... I'm not sure what will be in store after my competition in May.
I may make this my last one, or maybe I'll do another. I'm just really tired of trying to add muscle on.

you sound like me...so many injuries and pains and not really sure if it's worth it. i know for me personally if i didn't hit the gym and eat right etc i'd be bored to death...but then again it's also not my whole entire life....yes i think about it constantly....how can i do this different or what am i gonna eat later etc but i do not let it interfer in my social life. you only live once right?

maybe not be so hard on yourself in the gym...if you know heavy deadlifts are going to cause you pain and discomfort then maybe not train them as heavy...go more volume?? i think if you stopped training and just did yoga or jogged (i think the j is slient....yaaagging....anchorman quote :))or some shit you would miss it big time....i can barely walk some days b/c of my back and knee but i get to the gym and do what i can b/c i love it...just my 2c

I know I have to get there and I have to do it. I think by dropping to 4 days a week of heavy training which was started this week may help some. After seeing what monday did to me.. I don't know :lmao:
It helps a lot having SBT around since right now I'm mentally having issues getting food together and straightened out (not junk eating just sick of planning). She has pretty much taken that over for me and that has helped immensly!! If I could get some of the pain in control I think in a few weeks I could get my head off the ground.
You are right about the DL's and causing 'future' pain and issues. I'm not trying max strength this cycle. Focusing more on form, ROM, and mind to muscle connection. Playing in both the strength and hypertrophy ranges. I'm done with max anything this off season. Combining some new things I have read on and never done before which makes it interesting. We'll see how it plays out.
What happened to your log JPT? Do you plan on writing in one in 2007?!?

Wow, this is some powerful writing, Tre! But I think it's great that you're looking hard into yourself to see what you really want. And really, no one should be succumbed to aches and pains in their 20s!

I hope you find what you're looking for - I think we are all ultimately looking for "that place" but never sure where it is and then if it's a mere halt or a final destination  :rose:

everyone gets into a rut now and again....but if your in pain and your always aching (not the good kind) then you should re-evaluate what your doing. i think playing the mind muscle conncetion and rom is the way to go and then after your sick of that train heavy again. if the training bcomes painful again i would just call it quits. don't be so tough or your body...you don't want it giving out so you cant do anything!

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

Hey chica --- life is a journey and especially a fitness life is a constantly changing road. I wish I had the breadth & depth of knowledge I have now 20 yrs ago. Maybe I would've done different things w/ it. But given the environment of heavy training even 15 yrs ago ("girls don't lift") I guess I came out ok. Its never a bad thing to want a break and sometimes you just plain old get sick of it. Its knowledge you'll never lose, experience you will always have, muscle memory that will always be there and there's always another show. Its just another aspect of a full and fulfilling life.

And your body, life and mind are always evolving as well. There's simply no down side :)

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

and when i said quits i didn't mean training...i meant lifitng heavy. just re-read my post :)

:rose: I know where the heck is "that place"!! Like I tell everyone I'm never lost just temporarily displaced. I always know my directions and which direction to go... but sometimes I take different roads but ultimately end up at the same place as if I had taken a different route. Sometimes it's quicker.. sometimes I get stuck behind some slow poke or obstacle.. but I always get there.. It may not be on time, and I hate being late, but will get there. I guess driving and my life go hand in hand because that whole paragraph goes two directions.

I know.. I've been in ruts and this doesn't feel like one. It's different. I am re-evaluating what I'm doing based off my pain, and life. I know what it takes to put muscle on and I have to be extremely tough on my body in order to do so (thanks to genetics). I know if I ease up then it's just not going to be the same. Then it's almost like I should drop the goal. I know I will miss the competing part. It seems to fit so well and is what I have been searching for for 10 plus years'. I just didn't realize the body pain obstacle in getting there. I have the mental dedication to it. It is like having a second full-time job but the payment is sucking right now. I know I'll always lift weights.. It's just the goal as to why I am lifting or how I go about it that will have to change. No other physical activity really comes to mind to take it's place. Maybe rock climbing.. but unless I plan on climbing garbage dumps that have been made into ski hills there is not much support for that type of activity here. There has to be some sort of finishing to make it complete....
Running a marathon well is an achievement in itself, competing on stage well that's all I have to say. Playing softball... is a team effort, I need some single effort that will bring me up over that edge that challeneges me. Yoga is just yoga.. You don't see a bunch of yogis on a stage to see who can bend the best. Powerlifting well I think would be fun, but the pain issue will not allow that one.
Maybe it's hiking the Applachian trail... But dang I need a shower here and there. I mean I did go through basic training but that would be, eh because I couldn't get to the gym.
So in the end I still want to compete, and there is always a new level to it... It's just figuring a way to do it that I can handle. That I will figure out this next year!!

I know you know about the pains and how difficult it is to give training hard up based off of it. What do you do to quench that desire?!?

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

I know how you feel tre (well a little anyways). I always have some nagging little thing, & as soon as I get one straightened up, another one takes it's place.
Maybe after this next show, if you shift your focus to something else, a different athletic endeavour, a different physique. You're way too young to be aching like that. :worried:

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

DEC 28 2006
Mood = O.k.... Kept waking up because I was worried I was going to miss my 6:30 PT appointment....

Weight = 162.6 (Whowho new heights reached) lol

Soreness = Rt sacroilliac joint is not happy! PT worked on it quite a bit to get it unlocked. Lower hams still a bit. First time in a long time lower hams have been achey.
Fronts of arms/shoulders tender to touch and bruised from squat bar. Glutes.

Yesterday Weights:

BB bench press (tempo 311) (6 x 95)(1 X 115)(6 X 105)(1 X 125)(11 X 95)(15 X 95)
BB bent over row (tempo 311) (6 x 65)(1 x 95)(6 x 85)(1 x 115)(12 x 90)(19 x 90)
Close grip pull down (tempo 311) (8 x 100)(8 x 115)(8 x 120)
DB Shoulder Press (tempo 311) (8 x 30)(8 x 35)(8 x 35)
Hanging leg raises (15-17-16-15)
Jack knife on swiss ball (1 x 22) (1X23) (2 x 21)
Knee in w/medicine ball (4 x 25)
Knee in w/rotation and medicine ball (4 x 25) both sides
Vacuums w/lats (3 x 2 Min) rest 15 sec
Stretch and hot tub

Today =
1 25 minute session of HIIT.
1.30 hour Deep tissue massage

Notes:
~10 min Hot tub session yesterday seemed to help.. Really made me tired but had less overall soreness. So I will be adding this in as a component to get over some of this achey stuff I'm dealing with.
~Getting goals slowly figured out for 2007. So far I have 43 ;) Some are big, some are small, some are inbetween... Most have to deal with other aspects of my life besides my lifting and competing. Just trying to balance out the overall me, and keep progressing forward.

baths are great for sore muscles....but you know that already...i took one last night b/c my back was killing me!

Yeah it works even better if you combine stretching while you are in there. Well Hot tub anyway.. Harder to do in the bath tub. The shower though you can do some good neck stretching while hot water beats down.

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

DEC 29 2006

MOOD = Pretty Good
Weight = 161.4
Soreness = ABS I can't move... Having to pick myself up with arms to turn and everything they are toasted top to bottom from wed. So tonight's ab routine is getting cut.

Tonight will be lower body routine
and I'm thinking hot tub

Notes:
Yesterday was a pretty good day! I did HIIT for the first time in quite a few months. Thought I was going to have an asthma attack or my heart was going to pound out of my chest!!!
Ellyptical =
WU 5 min
Level 11 1 min
Level 7 45 seconds
I did that till I hit the 26 minute mark then finished with CD till 30 minutes.
It said I burnt 530 cals.

Then I hit the tanner, and did a massage trade. 1 hour just on my back, 30 minutes between hams and feet. I slept hard last night!!! I didn't hear both my alarms this a.m.

Today I'm straightening my desk, organizing my office, and getting my tax stuff all put together. Just getting everything straight before the diet down so I don't have to think about all this extra stuff.

Was going to do abs here but cut it since abs are still sore from Wednesday... So next week should be better recouped to tag again.

Re: Treils 2006 Competition Log

I just thought you were doing 55 lb DB shoulder presses and about fell outta my chair! :lmao:

I will live vicariously through you with all your strength lifts & high #'s. *bows*

I also decided I am not bulking anymore after this next cut. Im going to try & maintain the level Im most happy at indefinitely, working on whatever is necessary here & there. There's a goal, I posted it here so you can hold me to it lol :) 30-40 + more to go? ;)
