"real" email address got VIRUS BOMBED

expletive

New member
Maybe I pissed someone off, or just a random thing.
For years I would only get a few imprtant business emails.
For last couple weeks some of the emails were from people I don't know saying I sent them a virus and they are all pissed--a few addys were from classmates.com. (never been to that site)

At least I didn't open sketchy looking attachments, and crash anthing on my machine, but now email sent to me gets bounced back as "delivery failed". (account is paid for next year) Domain mail server crashed or just a coincidence that it is down. Have paypal buttons on that addy, it's a drag.

I sent a test email to myself and got this back:

It happens to everyone here. One dumbass on EF has an infected computer... and he never runs virus checks. He's been sending out infected emails (auto send) to everyone in his address book for a long time. The viruses automatically attach your email as the return address so people think the email is from you.

Thanks SofaGeorge, now I don't feel like a total turd. Will green you when I can.

Sounds more like you are on an RBL (real time black list).
Recently an RBL was given a DOS (denial of service), as a result, it was taken down.
The side effect of that is that anything that used that server to check mail against (for spam), will now show all addresses as spam.

Also, if a virus or spam looks like it is coming from someone's address - it isn't necessarily the case (and often isn't). You can fake the headers of an SMTP (e-mail) message, so it looks like someone else sent it to the person.
Many viruses and spam exploit this - as a result, whoever it is that has their address there, they get all the complaints that the e-mail generates.
