Well, I'm not even close enough to being hard core enough to consider a "real" gym yet...maybe after about another year of solid lifting, but right now it'd be a joke for me to go into one of those places. Besides, it's a convenience and cost issue for me. R&F is close to me where I live, and there's a location close to my work (if I need to hit it at lunch or something), plus my wife and I pay like $50 a month for the both of us, with no contract. So, that part works out for me.
As far as atmosphere, I'm pretty much oblivious to that shit at this point. I just throw on my head phones and do my own thing. In between sets (when I'm not striking a pose and showing off my massive 14" pythons..LOL!!!), i'll scope the hotties and dream about what it would be like to be big!
