Let's ask this: You have a 2.5 year old child. Assuming you had to make the decision, would you prefer that your child be locked in a room alone for an hour with a random pitbull or a random black lab?

I don't leave my child unattended in any room alone for any amount of time. Let alone with "random dogs".
So the question is loaded to begin with.

I own a black lab and a bull mastiff.
Both raised in a gentle, family environment.

DId anyone mention Chows? I was bitten by a Chow and a neighbor had a face nearly torn off by her own CHow. I would have kicked that damn dog in the face and beaten it's ass, but the owners were in the living room when it happened. I still should have done it.

Breeds are prone to certain temperments, but 90% of a dog's temper is from how they are raised and treated.

EXACTLY......my Rottie is the most loving dog you will find...but thats an individual thing not a breed-wide statement.

My dogs grromer has been bitten twice - both by Cockers

I like Dobermans, but not as a viscious dog. I have Dobermans because of their muscles. Man do they look good along side of me. Their coats are shiny, short hair, and just to look at them can scare the shit out of somebody. It in all in how train them. I just got my third one back from training (8 weeks and $1200 later), but worth every penney of it. She is great with the kids and gives me a great areobic workout. She is still a puppy though at nine months and weighs 78 lbs.

i think Dobermans are awesome dogs....if I didn't like Great Danes so much, they would probably be my dog of choice.

Dobermans are fiercely loyal to one person. There could be adaptability problems should someone try to replace that hand of yours.

This is not a question of practice, it's a speculative prod regarding dog breed traits. Of course nobody with a brain is going to leave their kid in a room with a strange dog.

The point is that given a pitbull or a black lab both raised in a gentle, family environment, I trust the the lab much more than the pitbull.

I couldn't imagine anyone leaving a child anywhere unattended for more than a few seconds.

Mastif's are the biggest dog. German Shepards have tremendous biting power. They can actually break a 2x4 in half biting it.
