Quiting the booze pays off !

I decided to get serious about becoming a stronger and better athlete, and decided the main thing holding me back from my goals was alcohol. I would usually drink 2-3 times a week, 10-15 beers each time.

I thought about it and it didn't make sense to me why i would bother worrying about the food i put in my body all day but then at night going out and filling myself with beer or cheap vodka.

my last drink was February 15, and in the short time since then i have lost more than ten pounds, added weight to all my lifts, and gotten significantly leaner. I look much bigger now at 212 then i did at 225. I wish i had done this a year ago.

This thread is to encourage anyone who is serious about the weights but still likes to drink to stop, ITS WORTH IT !

yup alcohol is also holding me back a little but i can't quit cuz i'm always going clubbing and stuff and its impossible to hit up a club without a few beers and a couple shots of bacardi :D. but the next morning i wake up, i can feel the difference in my muscles easily. they're smaller and softer.

yeah its a lot easier not to drink now that im at home then it was last semester when i was at school. Im hoping the not drinking will build momentum and i won't miss it at all, so when i go back to school in the fall it won't be an issue.

i quit drinking in january i believe. went along with being on the atkins diet, and that diet help me so much. i got off it for about 2 weeks and just went back on in yesterday due to an increase in fat. this time im goin all teh way, i wanna be able to see my abs.

lee - i've seen the most fat lost around my waist. i can see 4 abs a lot of the time, could probly get all 6 with a little more diet tweaking, but its too fun to gain weight.

same here man, top for 4 abs are almost fully visible now, i can see em almost all the time. booze gets yer gut too much, if only they made a carb-free beer... the Atkins Beer, that would rock

I dont think quitting alcohol necessary means you will make awesome gains, probably steady.

But one thing I guarantee is that if you are drinking heavy a few times a week I dont care if your training, eating, sleeping is perfect YOU WILL NOT MAKE ANY GAINS.

it's called Michelob Ultra, or as I like to call it, "bad tasting water."

Light beer is crap.

Anyway, I rarely drink, and don't regret anything. I see kids I went to high school with come into my gym like 3 times a year, and they it's going to make a difference in their disgusting beer guts. Bleh.

Alcohol ... who needs it ...

low carb/light beer isn't much of a solution because, like the fool i am, i drink to get drunk. So i will consume the same calories if i am forced to drink 20 michelob ultra's to achieve the same drunken state as 10 or 12 Bud Ice's

i also hate it when girls are fussy eaters, are constantly heard saying ' i feel/look fat' yet go out and drink all weekend

it is possible to make gains while drinkin occasionally. my friend who goes to high school with me is amazingly strong for his age and he drinks every weekend. he squats 405 below parallel for his final squat set and usually does it 3 times. his max bench is 405. and he does hanging cleans with 225, and hes only 17. im sure alcohol does hinder his gains but hes is still making plenty of progress along with his drinking.

so untrue my friend.. i have a buddy.. he drinks alot, when i say alot, i mean 12-20 beers 3-6 times a week.. still does.. and smoks about 10 cigs a day.. he wanted to get buff, i said ok.. ill show you the basics, but at LEAST stop smoking for 3 months...

sooo, before he started he weighed 115, is 5'4.. he benched the bar for 10 and squatted 95 pounds for 10.. ya know.. REAL weak..
he went to bed at about 4 AM and woke up at 2 PM, partied pretty hard.. and at 2-3 times a day..

well, he lifted pretty hard.. with just the same intensity as me...
let me tell you.. im 3 months, he gained 17 pounds.. was benchpressing 185 for 1, squatting 225 for 8, curled 115 for 6, and did barbell with 155.. thats the only numbers i can remember cuz it was last summer..

but he drank like a fish and smoked like a chimminey and make fantastic gains.. heres a link to his pic http://felonstarband.tripod.com//sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/danoak.jpg

i just think it depends on the person.. also, check out his songs at www.felonstarband.com they r punk.. and jsut got signed.. i hope they make it big :)

Not drinking has done wonders for me, though there are SOME people who can get by anyways.

I stopped drinking a month ago when I decided to start training for my first strongman comp. I was never a huge drinker to begin with, but I still enjoyed throwing a few back, who doesn't? I've gotten a lot stronger, leaner, and my event training is going great.

I've taken months off at a time from drinking before, and it DOES get easier as you gain momentum, after a month its easy, and after a few months you don't even care anymore.

Plus, once you start again, your tolerance is crap and you dont need to drink as much :).

I do recommend to anyone who's serious about their training and body to stop drinking, it's gonna do nothing but help you.

I don't see how an excessive alcohol intake could promote muscle growth or maintain health.

Believe me, alcohol cause damage to nerve endings, hinders protein metabolism, and decreases the ability to recover.

People are able to become larger because of the extra calories. The weight certainly isn't muscle weight.

TheOak, your buddy only gained because he was a newby. Lifting and partying don't go together in any respect.

I just got to say that I started lifting again after a 7-8 month lay off and I have made some great gains in 2 &1/2 months. Bf is down while lifts are way up. Ben drinking 2-4 times a week 4-12 drinks each time. All the same, I know I can't keep that up, and I quit drinking last week. I do have to say my energy is better after quitting. -john

The Oak--------

Your friend gained because he was just starting to work out. Hell the same thing happened to me.

I basically started boozing hardcore and lifting at the same time around 10th grade in high school. I went from 140/150 (cant remember) to around 175 by end of high school with shitty diet and serious drinking.

I continued drinking heavy all through college and was stuck around the 175/180 mark (5'11'' 8% body fat) despite flawless eating, sleeping and training.

Since I stopped heavy boozing post graduation, gains have been steady and I currently weigh 200.

IMO everyone has their regular weight and their "working out" weight which you will put on 20-30 lbs automatically when you start, NO MATTER WHAT YOUR LIFESTYLE.

very proud of ya gman, couldnt say i could give it up that easy, so the day you outbench me ill stop drinking and we'll be sober together

man... i hadn't drank a drop in a month and was making awesome gains.. then last night this girl im interested in was like "hey lets get drunk" so i proceeded to take 10shots of rum followed by a ton of beer. i definitely had a good time.... but i sure payed for it today. in the gym my incline press went down 40lbs :(.. and i just didnt have the usual pump. alcohol is a double edged sword.

its impedes in your body sending nutrients to your muscles and also can destroy muscle tissue

yea, so drinking everyday on a weekend can really mess up your lifting for a few days afterwards

I'm not goin to lie...

I drink usually 1-2 times on the weekend.. and usually a lot... 9-10 drinks plus.

I know its terrible for my body... and I do plan on slowing it down eventually... but I think going out and having fun isnt a bad thing.

I'm up to aroun 200 lbs at 5'10 and I hit PR's almost every single day. I just find If I keep the drinking to Fridays/Saturdays... it doesnt really seem to affect me too much...

I guess the biggest drawback for me is how easy it is to put on body fat due to the huge bonus calories on the weekend..

Look at B... He has some drinks every now and again, and I doubt even one person here would say that he isn't small...

Obviously no drinking is definitely optimal, but I think unless you plan on going pro, its not going to hold you back as much as people think.

My 2 bits (not trying to be an alcohol advocate...)

the thing is i dont go out and have a few drinks

i go out and get absolutely shitfaced, when i was drinking, it was every weekend, throw in thursday, then maybe another day, so say 3-4 times a week.

Thats 40-60 beers a week that im putting in my body

also makes me miss meals and go to bed later, its also proven that when you come home and go to bed after drinking, your body only achieves level 2 sleep or something, so you get shitty sleep, shitty recovery.

i read Bfold's post in a thread a while back and couldn't do what he does, i don't go out to enjoy a beer, i go out to get drunk.

So although i miss some of those drunken times, at least im not putting those two 30racks into my body every week

gmanlax7:
I see your point, and to tell you the truth majority of the time recently I havnt been getting shit faced...
But in order for me to get plowed I need to drink in excess of 15 Canadian beers... (canadian beers are stronger than US beer, 5% and up)

I can drink upwards of 10 without feeling overly buzzed...

Now I sound like some sort of drunken advocate....
But the truth is I don't think its a problem if every once in a while you go out and get absolutely plowed... 1 day out of your life is gone, you had one sub-optimal sleep, had a day of sub-optimal nutrition... but when it comes down to it its one day... there are 6 more in the week.

If you are a party nut and go out 4 times a week... OK this is definitely a problem, and i totally respect you for the guts it must have taken to quit...

But unless you plan on competing or something why would you completely rid yourself of something you have fun doing.. You dont need to go drinking every week, but if you had fun doing it before, why not go out and treat yourself, say once a month..

I know this kind of goes against what should be preached... but your only human man...

Congratulation to everybody who was able to completely stop drinking... I have too much fun with my friends to completely eliminate it, but I have huge amount of respect for those who can get over this hurdle.

yeah its said i swear by Ice beer, light beer is hell you spend more time pissing then getting drunk. milwaukee's best ice is my brew of choice. When my boys get back from school im sure ill booze this summer occasionally, but the habitual weekly drinking was killing lifting gains, so know it will be more of a vice at most, like girl scout cookies and fat chics

actually collegiate lifter thats a good point

i guess that does make drinkinging a water with each beast ice pointless

do you think its better to drink hard liqour ?

You can go on forever debating whether beer or hard alcohol is the lesser of two evils, but you'd be better off focusing on how much you drink in a given drinking night. Reducing your boozing style to a relaxed social drinking status from a sloppy binging animal house style of boozing would be far more beneficial than switching Gordon's Lite Vodka for your Barcardi 151. Some people binge for the "high' of blacking out, while others drink to relax, the second category will suffer less from their drinking.

we'll leave that to palmer

I'd rather not drink at all then drink half assed

social drinking is like the smith machine

Ha, nice simile there.

I might have to agree with madman ... I'd rather drink in moderation socially then get tanked. There is SOME good tasting liquor out there ...

Young metabolisms can handle drinking and working out....We all know guys who have done that. Problem is, it doesn't last long. One eventually wins out over the other.

I was thinking as I read your first post about 10-15 beers, 3days/wk or so. I assume it's not light beer so at let's say, 140 calories a pop (conservative for regular US beer), that's 1400 ro 2100 empty calories a night! No wonder you're seeing your abs again.

There are few things worse than beer for lifters: they are high carb/empty calorie. Plus, people will drink a "few" drinks, but no one drinks a "few" beers, especially college age folks. I've had friends who did nothing else but give up beer and lost huge amounts of weight.

Anyway...well done gman.

i've always heard vodka is lesser of the evils.... I know its hard to not go hardcore with things, but sometimes moderation is key.

Congrats to all of you who have stopped/cut down. I recently turned 21 and haven't drank since I was 19. I can't stomach it anymore. The thought makes me sick. I honestly think it's one of the worst drugs for your body and easily addicting. If the alcohol and tabbacco companies didn't have so much lobbying power and the government didn't make so much $$ from it and tabbacco it would definitely be illegal. I'm not saying that everything illegal is bad, just pointing out how fuct the system is. There are many "illegal" drugs that are way less harmful and particularly useful for some people.

yeah i must say dropping booze has upped my mary jane smoking, but still i keep it to the weekends and it doesn't effect my workouts the next day. It's nice to have something to look forward to on the weekends as a reward like i used to look forward to boozing

ok thats it. i've made up my mind. i'm gonna stop drinking for a few months. i dont know how i'm gonna survive the club without alcohol *sobs* :( :(

i hear you, i can't imagine going to a club sober. sick but true. you could always give GHB a shot if you could find it but that could lead to bigger problems than fat gain/extra calories

at least if your at the club sober there will be no beer goggles incidents to fret about the next day
