Quick car question... Oil Change.

I agree that the 3k oil change is a myth. Think about it if oil had a shelf life of three months then why would it sit in bottles for months at a time before putting it into your car. It would also come with an expiration date. The limiting factor on motor oil is the rate the additives in it break down and "dirt" collection in the oil. I run mine for 5k and have for years and have no problem. I also run fram filter but's that's because anyone else who makes the same filter charges twice as much. I also run their air filters because almost no one else makes the same one. I would recommend carquest or napa filters (both made by isuzu).

Cheers,
Scotsman

Typically oil change places recommend 3k miles or 3 months, because they sell oil.

5k miles/6 months is recommended by most car manufactures. You can extend that mileage with synthetic or synthetic blends.

If you want to find lab tested UOA's (Used Oil Analysis) for your particular vehicle, do a search here:

Oh yeah ... and try to avoid FRAM oil filters at all cost. :worried:
Gernman Syntec baby!!!!!

if your car is fairly new. . .mileage. . .period.

if your car has a lot of miles on it (which doesn't seem possible if you're months are up before your miles are up), the answer can change. . .as an engine wears, seals wear out and piston rings wear thin, allowing lubricant and unspent fuel to trade places. . .this type of scenario can make the "months" thing a little more important.

think of it this way....

your engine uses oil as lube...

the dirtier it gets the more grit it gets in the oil, the more abrasive it becomes

it's like using the same lube for sex more than what is recommended.. so if you used the same lube for sex 5 times.. it would be a little gritty, and thus cause damage to the parts that are exposed to the dirty lubricant..

Also, not exactly accurate.

I just changed my oil for the first time with only 2,440 miles on my car because it was 6 months old.

1) to comply with the warranty

2) condensation and the residues of combustion processes contaminate oil over time. Applies particularly to vehicles used for frequent short trips and in cold climates.

i wasn't talking about a brand new car. . .imho, with a brand new car i think the first couple of oil changes are probably the most important of a car's life. . .the first few thousand miles of a car's life, when the engine's tolerances are very tight, quite a bit of metal ends up in the oil pan and getting that metal-laden oil out of there and replacing it with fresh oil is very important.

Follow whatever oil change interval is recommended in the car's owners manual.

Ummmh ... not really

In the old days that was true, but now machine tolerances are so precise very little metal shavings end up in your oil pan. Many manufacturers deliver new cars with special "break-in" oils high in additives e.g., molybdenum, and heavy duty filters. Honda is particularly adamant about keeping the factory fill into the first recommend OCI. It would be unwise to change oil prematurely.

And, many high performance cars (Woot’s Viper) are tested so rigorously they are practically broken in at delivery and come with synthetic oils.
