Quick car question... Oil Change.

mobro said:
whats wrong with FRAM filters? i have never heard anything bad until now but you seem to have something to base that on PICK.

fitnessgrl,
is that you in your avi? if so you have an awesome waist line and figure from what i can tell. sorry, just sayin

Thaaanks :)

I don't go past 4,000 miles between changes now. My last car's engine blew. This one I got new and am treating like a baby.

perform an oil change 3k miles or 3 months, whichever comes first.

i've seen many heads from cars whose owners actually went by this rule and they were sparkling clean

i've also seen heads from cars whose owner did not follow this, and they were sludgy and dirty

3k/90 day oil changes are wasteful and is a myth created by oil companies wanting to sell oil.

If you follow 5k OCI'S just about every other component on your car will wear out before your engine.

Every modern oil ( ILSAC GF-4/API SL) will last 5k miles and hardly any owner's manual recommends 3k OCI's. I'd trust the engineers who built the car.

If you're that concerned about sludge and plan to keep your car well over 100k miles use RX treatment every 5th oil change.

try to order original equipment filters

Not necessarily. Most OEM filters are made by someone else ... they just cost more.

I prefer WIX or NAPA Gold (made by WIX) filters.

to many, oil is oil, but i prefer castrol gtx...i've seen motors stay sparkling clean with this stuff

I do too. GTX has an excellent cleaning additives.

i've used fram for many cars with no problems, but if you're worried just get the mobil-1 equivalent

It's not likely you'll have a catastrophic failure from a FRAM, but the orange canister POS's you buy from Wal-Mart, PepBoys, etc ... are very poorly designed.

Years ago FRAM was a quality filter manufacturer. Now their standard filter (the radioactive-orange cans) is one of the worst out there. It features cardboard end caps for the filter element that are glued in place. The rubber anti-drainback valve seals against the cardboard and frequently leaks, causing dirty oil to drain back into the pan. The bypass valves are plastic and are sometimes not molded correctly, which allows them to leak all the time. The stamped-metal threaded end is weakly constructed and it has smaller and fewer oil inlet holes, which may restrict flow. I had one of these filters fail in my previous car. The filter element collapsed and bits of filter and glue were circulating through my system. The oil passage to the head became blocked and the head got so hot from oil starvation that it actually melted the vacuum lines connected to it as well as the wires near it.

The other FRAM offerings are just poor values for the $$$.

for god's sake have a dude do it, you're hot enough (i think)

agreed :)

i just lol @ the thought of having someone else change my oil...if anything it gives me a chance to check out other parts of the car that might need attention (seals, suspension, exhaust)

How funny is that? Right now I'm laying in bed watching ESPN and surfing the net. If any random decent looking chick knocked on my door right now and said would you come change my oil in my car I would be out of bed and underneath faster than she could show me what car was hers. Chicks should get oil changes for free if they have any idea of what is going on.

Damn! I've got a FRAM on my car :worried:

You'll probably won't have a problem. Many peeps racked >200k miles using cheap dino oil and FRAM filters.

There's just better options out there including Wal-mart's $3 SuperTech filter.
