question for those in the army/navy/air force

for those who are or have been in the army or air force what actual job did you have? and did you like it?
im definately doing one.. but there are so many jobs available and theres quite a few i wouldnt mind doing.....

yeah it would be a career choice. im still not decided whether army or air force.. but i want an active job

the air force has things like Airfield Defence Guard, Security Police, Ground Defence Officer.. which i would be interested in.. but i dunno if theres much promotion in those..?

then theres the army which have the green berets (a special force) which youd do get to be in from promotion which would be great to be in. they do some awesome things.

but arghhhh i dunno!!

what it comes down to is your ASVAB test scores. this will tell you what you're qualified for.

after that, come back and post the list.

If you are in it for a career, I'd think AF or Navy would be nice. Army/USMC wouldn't be too good due to the many deployments and training exercises.

If you are in it just to earn some cash for college and have some adventure, then hell, choose infantry, go airborne and try out for Ranger! The best experience you will have with the some of the best units in the world.

well right now im thinking i would do it for a minimal 5 years... and keep going if i like or if not leave..

well i passed year 12.. and did english,computing,maths,music,busines studies

The Navy Squids get deployed almost more than anyone else.
Peace time or War time, the Boats are out there steaming around.

Other than a few dedicated Support staff on land, everyone else get a turn taking a Cruise usually for 3-5 Months for surface ships and Longer for Subs especially the Boomers.
You will be Rotating through base duty and a Cruise every 2 years with longer Cruises and shorter base duty during a War..

On a Cruise you may work something like 10 hr on duty and 8 hours off 7 days a week. No days off
And when you are on a ship, where are you going to go during your down time? Your Rack or Your Rack ?

If you are going to go in for a Career, get a Degree and a commision.

I came real close to going into the Navy in Flight Deck Ops but my Dad talked me out of that as an Ex Navy Chief.

I ended up in the AF loading Cargo. Lots of down time onboard but you pay your dues as a ground handler first.

I don't BS!!! LOL!!! Here's a question for ya, how long do the Navy work-ups last before they deploy? In the Marines, it's generally 18 month work-up followed by a 6 month pump.

From what I hear it really depends on what vessel or duty you are being deployed to..

E1 - 2 out of Basic are sometimes only given 12 weeks instruction on how to Cook, Scrub or Paint a Deck.

Depending on the MOS or rank it can be from only a few DAYS(seriously) to a few Weeks(6-12)

The navy is unique as the Ship comes into port with an Old crew, Re-Supplies and while this is going on the New Crew does a work up and repairs. Some career salties choose to practically live full time on the boats.

The larger the Ship, the longer the in-port time. Generally measured in days/weeks.

If you want to change your Specialty, you generally get sent to a Shore School for 6 Months or so and then report to a boat and start doing your job with a Mentor..
