Question about ProTan.....

SAF

New member
This will be my first time using ProTan for my show, and I've been hearing that 6 to 8 coats is usually required in order to avoid being flushed out from all the lights on stage. So, is 1 bottle enough for 6 to 8 coats? I'm not a very big person, only 5'5" and 170.

Also, I'm planning on applying my first coat Friday morning, since the show is on the next day. From what I hear, I wont be able to shower after I began the application, is that true? Damn, I hope I dont stink on stage :D

Here's what I did for my shows - I think it took 2 (big bottles) to cover me 3 times + I had a small bottle for touch ups.

Thurs night:
- prep with a shower and use a loofah or some good rough sponge & scrub w/ antibacterial soap
- Get someone to spray / paing on 1 coat, stand in front of a fan for like an hour to get it dry (nekkid!) - DON"T TOUCH IT
- DON"T take a shower - put on long sleeves & pants (like sweats) and sleep in it
- Also try to touch up your face

Fri morning: take a shower and get the first layer off

Fri night:
repeat Thurs

Sat morning: take a shower and get the second layer off
- keep some left over to touch up your face to avoid that washed out look.

This works pretty good if you have a good tan base already. If you feel you need more you can do another layer during the day friday. I would expect 2-3 layers.

Another thing you could test - this worked "by accident" for a guy I knew -- Instead of Protan in several layers, he had a tan base and the morning of the show he slopped on Dream Tan - this is a cream that you don't have to leave on and wait for it to soak in - but it does smear. The guy looked like he rolled in shiny chicken curry on stage -- BUT after the morning show he took a shower and looked great at the night show. So you might get some dream tan and take 1/2 a day to put it on and wait like 4-5 hours for it to soak in and then take a shower - see if you are dark enough with that.

Otherwise, Protan is tried & true, but just a lot of work and annoying to use. Also remember that they usually have prep people back stage who will be there to spray u down w/ PAM cooking oil & rub you down so you are shiny but not smeared or dripping.

I think 2 or 3 coats is plenty I can usually get 3 coats from 1 large bottle of Pro Tan, definatly condition your skin for a few days before applying, Pro Tan will really make dry skin very dark so mosturize and lofa before putting any on, I usually get up Saturday morning before the show, and jump in and out of the shower real quick to rinse of a little, then put the last coat on before going to pre judging. Good Luck

i saw ur pics and u are verry light. under the bright lights with just pro tan they wont see ur cuts. im a black guy and i make sure to put on one coat thurs after my shower...then another coat friday and no shower because when u wash it off u wash off a top layer so instead of being dark u will look slightly tanned. so after i apply thur and fri i dont wash anything off. then sat morning u will wake up dark with a good base tan. at the show u have someone put on dream tan. so what its messy, with the pro tan as ur base when u put the dream tan over it i dont care how bright those stage lights are u will be dark with a nice shine so all ur cuts and hardness is seen.

if u have a problem with b.o. just bring a spray bottle of deoderant...how bad can u stick after not taking a shower for a day and half?

ohhh this is key...WHEN U GET UR DREAM TAN BUY SOME BABY OIL FROM THE STORE AND PUT SOME IN THE DREAM TAN. ADD ENOUGH SO ITS NOT STICKY BUT RATHER RUNNY. WHEN I SAY RUNNY I MEAN LIKE HONEY. SO IF U STICK SOMETHING IN THE DREAM TAN AND PULL SOME OUT IT WILL RUN OFF THE OBJECT SLOW LIKE HONEY. by adding the oil u wont have to worry about adding any later as u will see everyone else doing behind stage. u will already have enough in the dream tan to be dark and shine under the bright lights.

1 bottle of protan will be enough. I personally like the Dreamtan formula 2. It is good shit, just a little more messy. If you go with that the morning of the show is when it is usually applied. I have heard of people doing it the night before though. If you use the protan start as early as possible so you can get some good coats on you. 4-5 should be good.

ProTan makes you orange? I've never heard of that before, but do you think it would be safe to say that it may have the tendency to make someone orange if they didn't prepare a nice base tan for themselves by visiting the tanning salon on a regular basis at least 4 weeks out? My skin is naturally dark, and I've also been going tanning, at least twice per week, so I dont think it's going to make me orange as opposed to some other *white* dude :D

Anyway, thanks for the advice guys, and gals.

Yeah you might be able to say that. You wont look orange really if you put about 4-5 coats on you. Email me if you want any other help bro. [email protected]

It's very unlikely that you will get too dark so I'd put on more than less.
I usually do:
Thurs PM - 2 coats Protan
Fri AM - Shower
- 3 coats Protan
PM - 3 more coats Protan
- 1 coat JanTana
Sat AM - 1 coat JanTana

The JanTana has a better color than the Protan but is harder to put on evenly. The combination works well together.

So I take it you guys all do your final shaving thursday before the first coat of protan. But wont the stubles start coming threw agian by saturday?

I thought that you cant shower after you apply ProTan. If you shower, do you scrub your body? Seems that if you do the tan will come off.

I'm taking Friday off from work just before the show. You need to have that day all to yourself to make sure everything is prepared, because ya gots lots to do! I plan to shave/nair my body Friday morning. Keep in mind that your body needs to be completely exfoliated before you apply any tanning dyes or else they wont go on smooth. I already picked up an exfoliating scrubber and soap and I plan to start getting rid of the dead skin about 1 week prior.

I dont know about you dog, but when I shave I get nasty little pimples that scab up real quick, so I will mostly use Nair to get rid of my body hair.

No - don't scrub in the shower. Just let the water rinse off the excess (and a lot will come off). I do this just to make sure the base coats are even, otherwise imperfections will be magnified with more coats. You'll also notice all areas do not respond the same - make sure you exfoliate all week prior to painting.

I agree with DrX. You need alot of pro tan to be dark enough. I personally Use Jan Tana show tan 1 coat on thurs. Shower friday morning and apply another coat and dont shower again until afetr the show! Friday night i apply Jan Tana competition tan and another Sat morning before prejudging. It gives you a good color. You could use Pro tan as your base if you want. Beleive me bro I ve seen toooo many people loose close competitions when their color was off or too light. You cannot get too dark bro, the lights will wash you out.
