Question About NERVE DAMAGE

havoc

Shaolin Ninja
I have a new injury that I have never had to deal with, its a sharp, stinging/burning pain in my upper right back/lower trap/right shoulder insertion area, it is nerve damage but I am not quite sure how to treat it, did 2 sets of 15 reps with 405 yesterday (deadlifts), and that did not help anything out. I have an electode tens unit that I was told to put on the area that is hurting, also heat has been recommended for nerve issues, anything else, this sharp pain is no joke. Thanks in advance. peace

hmmm, I'm no doctor - but since when did the cure for some injury involve 2 sets of 15 rep deadlifts with 405lbs?

I would think something more along the lines of "rest" might help

It could just be a vertabrae out of place, pinching a nerve. I had the same problem once. I went to a chiro and he fixed me right up.

Ahhh welcome to the world of pinched nerves buddy.

1. Get a pack of the tiger balm patches and have a nice hottie place one on your owie spot about every 4 hours for a couple of days.

2. Rest

3. You have some muscle fibers playing mamba around a nerve and pinching it. Heat and rest will help them move back into proper alignment.

4. There is no "Cure" once this happens and it can recur from time to time.

So I'm supposed to skip "deadlift day", that is not an option.

I had a severely pinched nerve a few years back bro. Ironically, it was caused by my own Chiropractor helping me "out of the hole" on Seated Dbell Military Press when I asked him not to. I lost ALOT of feeling in the parts of my arms that were receiving signals from that nerve, mainly: My left Lat, and bicep. It was pinched off pretty good for about 3 weeks until one day I was at the chiros office(yes the same guy), and had those electrode pads you speak of on me. I cranked them shits up as high as possible in order to get that disk to hopefully loosen up finally, so the nerve would be released. I heard a pop, and knew that was what it was. It took me SEVERAL months to completely rehab that one. Try doing behind the head pulldowns and only being able to use 1 plate...thats right ONE PLATE while doing them. Basically my right side was strong, but my left side was atrophied from not receiving the proper signals from the brain. Hopefully, you can get the nerve un-pinched(assuming that's the case) sooner than later brother.

Nerve impingement.

Bad news Havoc.

I was just operated on the exact same thing. In my case
it was my ankle.

Its just going to get worse.

Also, the longer it goes, the nerve damage might become irreversible.

I'd go see a neurologist ASAP.

There's really nothing concrete to do about a nerve problem. Nerve's have bad attitudes, so to speak. They'll get better when they want to get better. If it wasn't bruised through a surgical procedure, there's usually some type of impingement involved. That will only get better by reducing inflammation (if it's muscular). If it's bone or joint related, it will get better when the bones or joint realigns.

:lmao:

I can remember going into the trainers office any number of times in college and complaining of some injury (usually knees, feet, or hips) and the guy would say "it is very simple, you need to rest it or it isn't going to heal"
I would laugh at him and say the very thing you said "that isn't an option" - I wanted to go to nationals and there is no way some little annoying thing was going to stop that.
He would say back to me, all pissed off "well, then healing isn't an option"

I stopped going to the trainer and just kept training through various injuries - any time you reported an injury, you were just going to be told to rest.

At the time I thought the guy was a dick.

Looking back on it, and now that I have the knees of an old man, I'm thinking that perhaps he was right.

I don't know what is so important in your life that deadlift day can't be held off for 3 weeks - but I hope it all works out for you and that you benefit from it more than you lose in the long run.

:)

Your care/sarcasm has been noted, thank you HS.

How long did you actually compete on the ladies fitness circuit?

LOL

I don't think I could even compete. unless they allow a routine consiting of "all forward rolls" and... well, men.

don't get me wrong, I sure love wearing sparkly thongs

I had a shoulder impingment....didn't require surgery...they just gave me an ice/heat routine and some exercises (w/ a cord) Took about 3 weeks and then I was good as new.

BAH! Fuck nerves!

I servered the nerves in my forearm in May and now have no feeling in my upper right forearm and hand. It's great! I don't have to worry about scratching mosquito bites anymore, I can hold my hand on a hot element till it sizzles and have this cool mofo of a scar to impress the chicks with.;)

nb: DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT let any quack doctor try to reattach your nerves while you are only on a local anaesthetic. Beleive me, you'll regret it.:(

Years ago before I built up my neck and traps for football, I tried doing a forwards flip. I still dont know why, but I did. Landed right on my head. Easily on my all-time top 10 list of pain.

For 2-5 days, I walked around with one shoulder higher than the other and very limited neck mobility. After that, the pain went away on its own. It happened one time after that, not as serious. Probably just pulled muscles.

Your problem could be:
- Pulled muscle
- Pinched nerve
- Something more serious

I'd bet on #1 or #2. Give it a week, try appropriate pain killing measures: rest, herb, and whatever appropriate balm you like to use. Tiger Balm is good, but smells like ass. Mineral Ice smells much better. Cant remember what Icy Hot smells like, and Bengay is a classic old person smell. Maybe take some OTC pain killers (although I try to avoid them as much as possible due to potential liver damage, the fact that i'm a trooper when it comes to pain, and to maximize their effects when truly needed). If you have any Vicodin laying around, that might help the pain.

After a week, if it hasnt gone away, its time to see a doc or chiropractor. Good luck bro, hope you feel better.

Havoc, Fonz is correct, if the nerve is pinched due to some sort of compression, the longer the blood supply is cut off, the more irreversible damage is done....

Why doesn't Ranger post as much these past few weeks, my own vanity and stupidity over the years....

After my first back operation I was told never to Squat again, my answer...FUCK YOU....Kept on squatting, after my second back operation the Doc said no Squatting...again, a simple go to Hell and back to the rack.....

My frist was in 1993, my second was in 1999, since 1993 I have had around 70+/- cortizone shots, 4 epidurals and now going every two weeks for some new shit, nerve block injections with Depo-Medro or some shit like that......Now facing a third back surgery....

Doc said No Squats, Ranger replied...Not a fucking problem ever again....I screwed up my man, let my own vanity and goals fuel my selfish pride...Now I am screwed for life.....

Not a big deal actually, except I haven't picked up a weight in 4 weeks....heh heh heh....I have decided to change my overall goals in life...drop some upper body size(my chest is still holding at 53 1/2 inches)....drop some body fat, bring my upper body down to meet my leg size.....I thought it would suck, but when a Doc looks at ya and tells you point blank you'll be in a wheelchair in 5 years if you don't take better care...that gets your attention VERY quickly.....

Havoc, take the time to heal, fuck Chiro's...they might be good with muscles, but nerve damage is quite another thing...the tens unit...I got one too...you want mine, I got so used to mine, I could turn it up to ten and sit with it for hours, now I get stoned and hook it to my jaw to make my teeth clang together for shits anb giggles....heh heh heh

Due what is BEST for your Body, not what is best for your VANITY!!!!

That would be the best advice I could give anyone...Wish I'd have listened to it years ago....heh heh heh

I wish you the best of luck my friend.....

Peace,

Ranger

Damn Ranger......

I'm on Neurontin(1600mg/day) for peripheral nerve pain.

The pain is EXCRUCIATING when I train.

Its getting better but damn.........I thought I could manage pain
but this is like no pain I've ever felt.

Specially at night. Foot buzzes all the time.

2-6 months recovery time.

I can still train, but soccer? Not even in my dreams.

Havoc, don't be a stubborn SOB. Get some rest!

Fonz

I have burning pain shoot down the right side of my trap when I go too low on shrugs or turn my head the wrong way while doing standing concentration curls. It comes and goes.

I bet heat and massage would help, along with some rest. There are no magic bullets as far as I know.
