Question about Face Pulls

I dont have a leather strap apparatus at my gym like I saw the one used in Spatterson's post about face pulls a month ago. Well tonight I went ahead and tried something like what I saw in the pics, but with a normal tricep rope pull down. I felt an incredible burn/ache in my traps, but w/ that rope the movement is kinda awkward. Anyone use anything other then the leather strap to do face pulls? And this movement should hit mostly all rear delts and traps right? (cause that is totally where I felt it) Thanks for the help!
 
I guess I just something wasnt right or I was doing it incorrectly because not having those loops makes for an interesting way to grip the rope and perform the exercise :confused:
 
I bought a nylon strap online, but it turned out to be too short to do face pulls well. When I pull back, the angle at my elbows is not close enough to 90 degrees. And my arms are NOT long.

Where'd you get yours?
 
Well I definitely felt something, so I cant be doing it entirely wrong! Thanks for the help though! :)
 
Shoot, just loop a towel through the metal eye, and hang on to it. I hate to sound like the Martha Stewart of weight lifting, but I'm sure you have something just laying around the house that will do.
