question about celulite?

I dont know a whole lot about training women, so this one left me wondering. A female friend want me to help her get rid of celulite that she says she has on the back of her legs. But the thing is, she is has pretty low bodyfat and is in decent shape? So how do you get rid of the stuff when the person is already pretty lean?

Diet. It's fat...can't target burn it. Sorry. :(

so it is just fat? I know you cant target specific areas for fat loss, I'm just confused on how people that are lean every where else can get the cottage cheese on the back on the legs

We call them "skinny fat" around here. lol

Do you actually know her bodyfat? Skinny and lean are very different, as I'm sure you know.

no I dont know her bodyfat, I would guess somewhere around 18-20%.

Yohimburn, theres an idea that I didnt think of

I can't speak for her, but 18-20 is high for me...and at that % I would most certainly have some bumpiness. I wouldn't call it lean, for me.

Good point, VLC. Yohimburn could help, but she still has to do the dirty work. Damn estrogen. Damn. Damn. Damn. :)

Agreed, 18-20% fat is certainly not obese, but if you keep in mind that the majority of a young woman's fat will end up on her thighs and butt, then it's plenty high enough for cellulite to show. Dieting down to pretty low %bf is the only way I've ever got mine to disappear, and even then it's temporary.

It's just a chick thing. We carry more fat there, and that fat is constricted by a different kind of connective tissue than men have. This combo=cellulite

the 18-20% was just a rough guess, looking at her today in jeans and a shirt she looked fairly lean, and skinny, small waist and skinny legs, but thats not really a good basis for judging fat levels though
Thanks for the advice

In addition to diet, I'll add that leg training will help a lot. Lots of women think their legs are "too fat" if they don't look like toothpicks. Trouble is, even toothpick legs can be jiggly and have cellulite if the muscle underneath is undeveloped and soft. A little muscle size can help stretch and smooth out the fat. Plus, a trained muscle is a hard muscle, meaning less jiggle from whatever fat's on top.

i just bought some cellusculpt from avon...

$20 a tube (that's Cdn. $) and it's guaranteed to reduce your cellulite by 60% or your money back...

I ordered some because i'll try anything once.

Covert Baily says in one of his books, "even the healthiest jiggle."
Unfortunately we women are predisposed to this ugly cellulite. It's not fair. Dittos to Fitfossil, working legs will most likely help. Especially nice strict squats to fill out the muscle thus acting like a butt lift. We can do the best we can with what we have but we must learn to accept ourselves and our flaws and be happy with it. I think that's the hardest obstacle to overcome.

Keep us posted on what you think about this product. I have a friend who tried something like this and she said she saw a differnce in her skin in about 4 weks.

I am at 13-14% BF and STILL have spots of cellulite! Ughhhhh! I am not "skinny fat", either. I am an elite level bike racer, so have fairly muscular legs and do lift, but upper body only (I can bench my weight ~5x during my race season and 8-10 reps in the off season when I weight train more). Maybe next off season I will do some leg work and maybe? rid myself of this ugly stuff!

I agree, it is totally NOT FAIR that men don't have to deal w/ this!

"I don't know...I'd rather have that than the tire." :)

Don't forget that bald thing, and shaving your face, and wearing a tie, and worrying about the size/performance of your penis etc...

Ha, spatts: I have to deal with bodyfat like most men. Even at a high percentage, my legs and butt stay firm, but my midsection and low back get hit with bodyfat.

Oh yeah, the evil tire.

Needsize, just remember the "first on, last off" rule with bodyfat. If the fat around this chick's thighs/butt has been around forever, it'll be the hardest and last areas to be rid of it.

Patience will be a virtue here. She just has to make sure her diet is in order (diet log). I would do this before resorting to any thermos. And what's she been doing in the way of training?

some great thoughts on here ladies, thanks, I'll help her come up with a program. Slinky, I dont think shes doing much in the way of gym training, shes an active person, long walks with the dog every day, that sort of stuff, but no weight training, which was my first suggestion anyway.

And while you guys are listing off reasons to not be a man, dont forget that women completely own us through our over active sex drive, thats my least favourite reason for being a man...

OMG! I think I just peed my pants!:lmao:

I wonder if the cellulite lotion stuff acts like an astringent, causing the skin to tighten up? Can you post the ingredients please. Luckily for me, I don't have the cellulite problem (at least I don't think so) but I've always had relatively big legs.

Any women here have big arms instead of the usual big leg thing? This is where I gained fat during pregnancy and it is really slow to come off.

I have fat arms and fat legs!! It really stinks. The arms are starting to firm up. Lost like 4+ mm this week in bodyfat on them. Trust me I know the feeling!!!

My arms got fat when I was pregnant too. My legs are MUCH larger, but my arms are much fatter. I dunno...I'm about 17% fat right now and it's so hard to tell. One day I just feel like a blob, and the next day I feel like I've got some good mass. Depends on how much water I'm carrying.

On the cellulite thing it's a genetic trait. Yes it has to do with diet and exercise but I can voutch for the fact that you can have extremely low bf a clean diet and lift 5 days a week and still have it. If my bf went any lower I'd look emaciated. There's a lot of fat people who don't have it and lots of skinny people who do and vice versa. It's proven to be genetic and as far as the cellulite creams most of them are bogus. Those that do work actually plump the skin causing the dimples to fill in and it's only temporary. Spot training is a myth so don't bother. When you lose fat you lose it wherever your body tends to lose it not where you necessarily want to lose. I'm considering endermologie which supposedly works albeit short term and you have to get it done once a month, but it's been okd by the FDA to work. We'll see.

I'm the fat arm queen..I kid you not, when I was 380 pounds, my arms were about 22 inches+ around...I'm not kidding. And now that I'm thin, I'll never go sleeveless. Some women fight fat in their thighs..I fight it in my upper arm..go figure.

I hear ya!!! Right now my thighs are 23inches and every thing else is in porportion. But then theres my 13 inch "biceps". It's like Spatts said, some times I look at my arms and think I have a lot of muscle. Then other times they just look fat. Anyway my arms look really out of balance with the rest of me!

Yohimburn is the only thing that has ever worked on my cellulite.

Still have some to go, but it's gotten rid of about half of what I had.

Yohimburn works huh? Everyone I know that has used it said it's a scam. Well I've decided to go in for endermologie using Synergie. For $900 for the year this better work!

So the Yohimburn works? I've been considering it and have been curious of how it is working for other people.

My Girlfriend finds that when she starts to diet etc, that dinking about 5ltrs of water daily and using various other detox tricks. that the cellulite almost disapears.

All girls put on a layer of fat on the lower body area during puberty. (Yeah, life sucks.) Genetics plays a big part in it; fat cells can be shrunk/depleted, but they do not go away. (See part above about life sucking.)

My problem is different; my thighs are strong tho not perfect. I have good arm definition for an amateur weightlifter. My calves, on the other hand, are enormous. They have always been larger than average (strong, yes, but large) even when I was young and very lean. I'm doing unweighted calf raises at high reps. And to think all the guys at the Y complain about their skinny calves ... too bad we can't trade!

I"m with ya there DF -- my dad's calves are almost literally as big as his quads & I inherited them, along w/ my mom's fat butt. (No offense mom). I can "calf press" all day and I think my max for calf press on the leg press was 8 plates per side. Regular leg press, uh, not nearly. Man, if i just would've gotten mom's calves & dad's butt.

heavy leg workouts, clean diet, and yohimburn pretty much eliminated my GFs cellulite. Which of those (or all) did the most I can't say. But somewhere in there something did the trick.

Yep, Yohimburn works. Used it with a basically ketotype diet and lost about half of what I had, and am working on the rest.

Lots of water and skin brushing helps, too.

I didn't have ANY - not a speck of cellulite - til I had kids. Damned estrogen! Though I am not any bigger than pre-kids, I got tons of it during my pregnancy - particularly my second. I was dumb then, and ate a lot of junk along with the "good stuff".

Yeah, I would like to know how that stuff from Avon works b/c I have seen commercials and have thought about buying it, so once you get the scoop on how well it works then please let us know. THANKS!!!
