Question about cats and dogs, need advice here

pdaddyII

High End Bro

So my girl is moving in thr33 weeks from now. She wants to get a cat and a dog. The cat is in question in regards to type/color/gender etc... but she's dead set on getting a shi tzu.

Any input on cats(I'm ignorant, never owned or lived with one), or shi tzu's for that matter, would be greatly appreciated.

Another one bites the dust. :worried:

Do you have a house and yard? Or do you live in a condo or apartment?

Just say no to rat dogs bro.

I would hate to have a big dog and live in the city, no way would I want to walk my dog then have to pick up a 2lb dog turd. Small dogs are way more convenient for city living.

Toledo isn't really a city, like Chicago or NYC.

It still sucks picking big dog shit up no matter where you live. My parent's had great danes when I was younger. We had two of them running around. To a kid a great dane shit can look like a small dirt hill.

House with a yard, she's claiming it to be her TOTAL responsibility though so you won't see me back there with a shovel and Kroger bag.

A plastic bag from the grocery store(Kroger's) is equally effective for all dog poo. :)

Just an FYI, I bought an ex two dogs... Guess who ended up with them when we broke up.

Now there is an animal lover...

Get a dog you don't have to take to the groomer. My friends parent's had a shi tzu that fucking thing would bite me everytime I was over there.

lol YAH that's what all dog owners think. but you never smell your own dog or notice all the car hair on your clothes

Hard not to notice all the hair lol. I just have to use a roller on them or wash more often. I use a ton of febreeze and have plug in air fresheners to help as well.

I always ask my friends that come over if it smells like dogs and they seem to think not. Just requires extra work, much like a child.

BTW, my car has no hair to get on my clothes. :chomp:

She is going to call you selfish, and tell you that you are crual to animals when you remind her it is her job.

TRUST me, i do. I've always had super human olfactory glands. I'm a self proclaimed metro sexual, nothing of mine smells bad.

is she that same blond girl you posted on the melotan thread? If so she was really cute and it looks by the way she dresses and I dunno how to explain it but shes attractive but you can tell shes not a slut party girl...So congrats

Cats shed...sometimes tear up your furniture. Hair over everything. If you clean the box regularly you should avoid their smell.

Never researched the dog much, never wanted one. Chances are you either end up in the back yard "helping out", or you'll be stepping in shit at some point. If you end up liking the dog, not a big deal...but if you hate it...

If she wants a cat and a dog, I'd suggest getting the dog first. Then get a 6-8 week old kitten, so that it grows up accustomed to the company of dogs. If you get the cat first, and the house is his territory, he may never really accept the presence of the dog.

my friend owns a shih tzu, and it's temperament is awesome - so much fun to play with. It is an ugly flat faced fucker though...if i was gonna get a little yap dog, i'd at least pick a cute one

She'll be moving out before he dog is house trained...

Or be pregnant.

Seriously, she should move in first and after you're living together 3,4, 6 months you should decide on such matters. It's like buying sofa before the house (but the sofa will be less heart breaking to give away).

Solid advice, thanks. It makes sense and was an issue i was concerned about.

Chris, same girl, no she's far from a partier, has an excellent head on her shoulders. Appreciate the compliment maing

:wavey:

I had a shitzu, the pronounciation of the name says it all. They are stubborn little dogs that are notoriously difficult to housebreak. I wouldn't take another one of those little fuckers if you gave it to me. The one I had was not unusual. It's a crap shoot with them. You can get a great one, or you can get a misserable little pissy shitter. You don't have to believe me: http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/shihtzu.html

Frankly, take your lady to a pet store that has Lhasa Apso puppies. They look virtually identical to Shitzus, but are a slightly larger dog, more intelligent with a more stable overall temperment.

Either way, both breeds require DAILY grooming. I cannot emphasize this enough. You also need to keep an eye on their ears, they're prone to getting gunky ears because they have floppy ears and sometimes a lot of hair grows in the canals.

As for the cats and dog house, either get young animals, raise them together, or get young adult cats that have dog experience from a shelter. If you bring a small dog into an established cat household the cats are going to exert dominance over them and fuck them up because no small dog can take a cat. You bring a kitten into an established dog house and the kitten is liable to be treated like a chew toy and develop fear of the dog.

Finally, please, please, please do not declaw your cat, it's cruel and it risks ruining a cat's temperment or litter habits The absolute best scratching post is here and worth every dime (get the post BEFORE you get the cat, I totally recommend this, great company, great product, quick service):

Dogs, being social animals, will accept just about anything that you do, usually, unless it's a problem dog. So a dog will just see a new cat as a new playmate, or new toy. Cats, though, are solitary nocturnal predators and socializing doesn't come naturally to them, so you kind of have to tiptoe around their social issues until things work out.

I used to breed shitzus. They are obstinent, but cute, and a bit tough to potty train. Good luck...lol.

Both my dogs are box trained. I never kennel them when I leave for work. I can't remember the last time I picked up shit or cleaned piss off the floor. Sometimes Rocco will get lazy and get 3 of 4 legs in the box and squirt alittle on the floor, but 99% of the time they make the box.

This is Rocco greatest and cutest dog ever.

How likely are they to get along with cats?
