Putin thinks Israel 'pursuing wider goals'

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - President Vladimir Putin said he thinks Israel is pursuing wider goals in its military campaign against Lebanon than the return of its two captured soldiers.

"However complicated the questions are, maximum efforts must be applied to resolve the situation in a peaceful way and I think all efforts have not been exhausted," Putin said early Sunday.

"However, it is our impression that aside from seeking to return the abducted soldiers, Israel is pursuing wider goals," he said at a midnight news conference after a dinner opening the summit of the Group of Eight industrialized nations. He did not elaborate.

Israel began military strikes against Lebanon on Wednesday, after Hezbollah militants captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid. As civilian deaths mount, diplomatic efforts to end the fighting have yet to get off the ground.

The issue is certain to dominate the G-8 summit, and differences between the leaders began to appear even before the annual meeting began.

U.S. President Bush, who met Saturday with Putin, has been outspoken in defending Israel and accusing Hezbollah backed by Syria and Iran of igniting the crisis.

Putin agreed it was unacceptable to pursue goals using force, but said that "at the same time, we work under the assumption that the use of force should be balanced."

The G-8 countries — the United States, Russia, Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Italy and Canada — were expected to issue a declaration on the Lebanon crisis.

"We, the Russian side, regret ... that on the eve of the G-8 ... we see an escalation of the situation in the Middle East," Putin said Sunday.

On Iran, Putin indicated that Russia had not changed its opposition to sanctions, and he defended the country's right to pursue nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

"The question is not about toughening our stance, but about finding common approaches — this is actually the most difficult, but can prove to be the most effective in solving the Iranian nuclear problem," he said.

Turning to other issues, Putin said the summit would address conflicts in former Soviet states. He said he had discussed the issue with Bush.

Putin said their talks focused mostly on Georgia, where tensions are rising over the separatist provinces of Abkhazia and most recently South Ossetia.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, who visited Bush at the White House last week, has made it a priority to bring the two rebel regions back into the government fold. Russia, which has peacekeepers in the region, has provided support to the separatists — in part by issuing passports to their citizens.

:lmao: @ Iran wants to pursue nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. looks like things might get real ugly one way or another.

Rumour has it that Iran has moved 2 brigades to Syria to add to the one already in the Bekaa valley.
Good opportunity to test weapons, like the new Iranian Kornet-based ATGM if Israel is foolish enough to mount anything more than a lightning raid.

damn, didn't know iran had those

An Anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) or weapon (ATGW) is a guided missile primarily designed to hit and destroy tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles.

ATGMs range in size from small shoulder-launched portable weapons, to very large vehicle- or aircraft-mounted missiles capable of defeating the heaviest tank armour.

Guidance commands are sent to the missile through wires or radio.

Israel has a pretty good track record fighting in the Bekaa valley, tho. Mostly due to thier air superiority during the 6day war.

The point missed in this thread till now is exactly that Iran is being aided in its ambitions not only by Russia, but by China. Another reason why the UN is such a joke. Neither would ever sanction serious action against Iran because they are encouraging them along in their goals. This is all about the big powers going at each other through proxy.

You have to laugh at that hypocritical sack os shit Putin talking about measured responses after what they've done in Chechnya. Fucking people have no shame.

just rumour
I don't think they could move that TO&E w/o detection

You also have to laugh at people who only see one side of the issue. Just because a country disagrees with U.S. foreign policy, doesn't make them an enemy. Americans are ready to crucify any foreign leader who publicly disagrees with the president. The U.S. tries to impose its will throughout the world, then gets offended when it is shut down. Plain and simple. If the U.S. government thought and acted rationally (instead of blindly backing Israel and allowing it to act with impunity) we would have more "diplomatic pull" around the world. Since we don't, some countries will be a thorn in our side on principle alone.

Iran is definitely an enemy of the U.S.... But the point missed in this thread until now, is that so is Israel.

The sheeple blindly rally around our "steadfast principles" once again, eh?

About four months ago it was reported that Iran had acquired the most technologically advanced/fastest torpedoes. If I recall correctly, they can reach a speed of 200-300 or so M.P.H.

How the hell would they get past the US military that stand between them and Syria without being detected? Thats not a rumor, thats make believe.

There's a big problem with that torpedo. First, you have to detect the oppposing submarine before it has blown you out of the water. No one, I mean no one is better at Anti-Submarine Warfare than the US Navy. We have honed that to a science over 60 years. Believe this, the Med, the Red Sea and Indian Ocean are crawling with fast attacks, and I guarantee, a few boomers. Besides our destroyers and frigate pickets can prosecute any vessel before it sneaks inside and were to catch a Carrier or an LHD off guard.

oh, and no torpedo is faster than a depth bomb dropped by aircraft.

you're just in another flock but you don't realize it

I loaded an off browser, opera, and it returned me to this thread
