Push Press

is this another one of those "absolutely have to have someone experienced to show you the technique" kind of exercises? becuase i'd like to add it to my routine, and the movement doesnt look too complicated..

I'm not sure if it's the loop editing on the video or not, but I do mine in one smooth motion. In other words, when I bring the bar to my shoulders, I go right into the next leg dip and drive, without resetting.

Maybe I'm the one in the wrong. :) The video looks more like a push jerk to me.

video is a bit messed up. i noticed that. thanks for the responses. anyone care to mention the ratio(or %age) for a set of five reps relative to your bench press.

Make sure the bar travels in a straight line, and end's up above the ear line at lockout.
It's less complex than bench, squat and deadlift.
Starting strength has in depth instructions on how to correctly perform the lift.
There is a slideshow and also a video on this site that seemingly shows good technique, you will need sun java or something to view the slideshow

no....

because there is no correlation. you are using your legs to build some momentum and your upper body is taking over.

Should the Push Press be done with legs shoulder width apart.. or one leg front and one leg back? Can it be done either way?

I used to do them approximately shoulder width apart (a little wider) and i injured my lower back, I think it was from over arching my back when doing the PP.

shoulder width apart or more if you want. keep your glutes tight, and tucked a bit, and it should keep your lower back safer.

On monday I did 30 push presses with 150lbs.

Ouch...I hate high reps...lol.

I've done some 20 reppers and I can feel the heat for a few days. I'll normally do a set of 10 and 5 afterwards if I can. I feel them in my delts, triceps, glutes, hams, and quads...GREAT total body workout.

I've seen people doing these in a staggered leg formation. :cough:(me) Is this acceptable? They would change the stance every set with each leg being up front and behind the same amount of time.

when you push with the legs, are you pushing with the heel or balls of the feet...?

the 2nd vid clearly shows his heel coming off the floor a bit...

is there knee lock out...?
