I'm somewhat in favor of this. I don't think France's actions should be swept away in a wave of hugging, but i also don't know if alienating the US from our allies is a good idea either. Somewhere in the middle, to punish the french, but not totally push them away would be good.

I think the idea of punishing France "for its opposition to the war on Iraq" is absurd.


On the other hand, punishing them for their weapons for oil program should be considered.

I dont mind that they opposed to war. What pisses me off was how they went around to every other nation trying to build a coalition against us.

I agree with Almighty about it not being about disagreement, but about trying as hard as they could to thwart us. I think the motives of France's leaders were mainly money and pandering to anti-american sentiment for political gain.

The fact that they aren't using the UN oil for food program as leverage anymore is a good thing about the French though. Thats pretty sick, to use a humanitarian crisis as a weapon to thwart your political opponents. Luckily France recanted and wants to suspend the sanctions now, so they have that in their favor.

I think a big part of the motive was to keep the world from learning that France was giving weapons to Iraq. As was Germany and Russia, along with intellegence.

Yep. 81% of all Iraqs conventional weapons came from Russia, France & China. about 70% of the companies that worked on iraqs WMD program were German.

France really ticked me off w/ their grandstanding. They tried to exert influence on the UN despite really not having any power. Even though Germany and Russia also opposed the war, they are powerful countries. This is a spiteful sentiment, but I think we should punish France, but not alienate Germany or Russia.

Shall we forget the Russians working with Iraqi spys? Shall we forget them sending weapons to Iraq as we were engaged in war with them? Shall we forget the weapons and support the Germans have given to Iraq?


I'm not suggesting what we should do, mind you, but it seems that many of us have forgotten these things as fast as they had surfaced.
