my gym doesn;t have a weight belt, and i was wondering if having my training partner hold down my feet as i did pullups would be a reasonable alternative to the belt.

if so, could these take the place of lat pulldowns?

All you have to do is lock your ankles when your hanging and have someone put a dunmbell in between them.
 
Do the above and take solace in the fact that they are infinitely supperior to using the pulldown machine.

If you are tall you can even set the dumbell yourself before taking your grip. The chained belts are faily cheap if you are serious about performing the exercise. Works for a variety of exercises.
 
i started off with chinning with the db.

if you are serious about it, as madcow suggested, get a weight belt. it also takes quite a cheating element out of it too. i could chin a 40lbs dumbbell strictly for 3 reps, but i late found out that i wasn't chinning it quite so strictly when i got the belt and could only get 30lbs for 4-5 reps
