Do pull-ups put much strain on the deltoids ?
 
seems mostly lats and biceps to me.

not much strain in the shoulders - i go about a foot wide beyond each shoulder

I was just wondering if there could be a link between my shoulder tendonitis and the pull-ups (large grip) I'm doing

no, i can hardly do them (lack of flexibility I guess)
only to the front

but I am doing shoulder's Behind the neck Press
 
Remember only go to about ear level with behind-the-neck presses.

Try stretching. Get a lot more flexible. This might help, I don't know.
