Protein Shakes and Ketosis

Okay, this is really starting to bug me. Im trying a keto diet, where 4 of my meals come from whey isopure protein shakes. However, its been about ehhh...5 days and I havent shown signs of ketosis at all (according to the ketosis test strips I bought). Could it be the shakes?

I know whey is 'fast' digesting and since Im taking in about 150 grams of protein from them and protein converts to glucose at a 58% rate, could the 87g of glucose that results be enough to keep me out of ketosis? The shakes are spread out over uhh....7 hours.

I'll admit I havent been able to add flax to these shakes since I have been taking ap tests which last ~4 hours every day for school, but still......even at 150g of pure protein, would I not show signs of ketosis?

Anyway, thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Oh Btw....Im probably going to order some ALA soon and see how that works out.

keto diets call for large amounts of fat too dont forget them they are an essentially part of the diet.

As fast as the protein keeping u out of ketosis, probably not, altho i am assuming that 160 gram of prot is per 4 shakes and not per 1 that would be insane.

What else are u eating? And if ur not eating anything else u need a BIG rethink

keto diets do not rely on excessive fat intake. Fat is like a neverending supply and eating fats generally only adds calories (aside from EFAs).

Keto diets are about lowering blood sugar levels to secrete glucagon and burn ketones. On a calorie restricted diet, assume 10% of fat, 58% of protein and 100% of carbs will end of as blood glucose. Decrease the amount of glucose that ends up in your blood. If you are unable to decrease your blood glucose enough by limiting carbs and protein, increase your fat intake slightly to help your body shift into ketosis. Or, if you need the calories anyway, add fat liberally. This is because your body has the potential to convert 90% of the calories from ingested fat to ketones.

At a very low level of blood glucose, all of the glucose is instantly used by the brain and muscle cells. This is not true of ketones in the blood, so dietary fat is not as important in developing ketosis as usually thought. Conversely, if your blood sugar is too high, no amount of fat will result in ketosis.

keto diets DO rely on fat intake, if you cut out all carbs and just eat proteine no wat are u going to get near even a starvation amount of cals. The fat is there to supply the extra cals+energy.

Ketosis is just about getting the stored liver glycogen below a certain level (and no i dont know it by hart :D), thats why when people take large amounts of ALA and carbs are able to stay in ketosis because of the larger uptake of glucose by the miocytes. Anyway i dont want to make this a pissing contest your points are valid plornive.

I think we both suspect he is getting some carbs from somewere else which is preventing him from getting into ketosis.

Have you done any cardio or weights to help deplete glycogen stores? Are you using any aspartame? Have you had any amounts of fructose?

I was always under the impression that keto diets relied on fat intake. Dan Duchaine, Lyle McDonald & Mauro DiPasquale all recommend that 75% of your daily calories come from fat with the other 25% from protein.

"Fat intake must be at least 1.5 grams of fat for each gram of protein/carbs. If you want a rationale, use Dejanews and track down my discussion of the ketogenic ratios. If you want to try to get into ketosis on less fat, it's your funeral. It will happen but it will take much longer and not work as well. Please, please, please trust me on this one. I've gotten far too much mail from people who can't get into ketosis until day 4 or 5 of the week because they are not eating enough fat on the diet." Lyle McDonald.

Some of Lyle McDonald's original work can be found here: http://solid.net/lowcarb/lylemcd/ It's a little disconjointed but worth reading if are serious about being in ketosis.

Concerning your protein shakes, if you have 20 grams of protein you will need approx 26 grams of fat. 4 tsp of flax and 4 tsp. of olive oil will give you exactly what you need. Not very tasty but it works.

The best way to get into ketosis w/out dropping calories to a dangerous low is with fat. Go w/ 85% fat, 15% pro for one or two days. If you're still not in, something else is wrong.

I agree he needs more fat, but here is ANOTHER thing to watch
for when on the keto diet.....GLUTAMINE!! This shit will knock
you RIGHT OUT of ketosis! Be careful with those shakes! Eat
more whole food if possible.

I'm not gonna get too detailed but Lyle McDonald would agree that ketosis does not rely on fat intake. _jaap_ pointed out that the only requirement for ketosis is getting liver glycogen low. Fat is only for calories.

MrMakaveli-
How many grams of protein, carbs and fat are you eating per day? How are you dividing your meals?
