Protein and constipation

Hey all, thanks in advance for the wealth of information and expertise.

Protein intake, and high pro/low carb diets... importance of clean proteins have been covered ad nauseam here,

However, I'm trying to get everyone's take on a high protein approach less likely to cause constipation.

Not to get graphic, but in the past my body has not reacted well to mounds of animal protein (chicken, fish, steak) and multiple protein shakes/bars per day. I've tried to mix it up a number of ways, adding psyllium husks (metamucil) to shakes... upping leafy greens... etc to try to alleviate the binding effects of all of the protein, but invariably I can't meet my protein requirements without tying myself in knots.

I'm trying to maintain a high pro/low carb balance with cardio mix to drop fat at the moment.

Thanks so much for your time, and apologies again if this has been covered (I dug, but couldn't find this exact issue)

Ok, open to constructive criticism...

First don't drop carbs, low carb is dumb if you are not competeing in a contest.

We need to get you at a decent proportion that is easy to maintain and understand.

Start at 40% carbs 40% protein and 20% Fat.

From there lower your calories to 300-500 below your BMR (Basal Metabalic Rate). Work from there.

***Any human has constipation during low carb, it's not pleasant in the bathroom, we can allvouch for that. Your body needs carbohydrates to survive, brain function, and natural body processes and most of all ENERGY (glucogenisis). All protein does as act as a building material, carbs are the men that put foundation together.

The wise decision is to eat better carb options like sweet potatoes, long grain brown rice, oatmeals.

I lost 5% BF and 15 lbs eating 40-40-20 and never was hungry, Honestly, there were days I was stuffed, I was full of energy 110% w/o caffeine or any supplements.

Increase fiber intake. Eat more green veggies, buy over the counter fiber therapy. walmart sells their brand pretty cheap.

Potassium supplements!

If you get your potassium/sodium balance way out of whack, your body will compensate by pulling the potassium out into your large intestine( along with huge amounts of water ).

Make sure you do it on a night you don't plan on going out though. :)

When I was doing the ANPB diet, I had a similar problem, and I just took down a handful of potassium gluconate tablets along with 2L of water. A few hours later I was all cleared out.

CAVEAT: If you have impaired kidney or intestinal function, do NOT do this. hyperkalemia can cause major problems.

Hope this helps.

Ok I didn't read your long long post. But take it from me, if you are taking to much protein you WILL crap. I don't eat any veggies at ALL, and I go at least 3 times a day. Protein it up

This is very helpful, never heard of this... I'd imagine this will assist with cramping issues as well. Thanks for the info.
