wonder how you would have ever guessed that one....hmmmmm

Sheer luck + my awesomeness 'tis all. :)

No ramping - straight sets. Starting out very light and ramping over the weeks, though. I should be good for some linear progression for awhile.

AI, either you misinterpreted or I didn't word properly. I like what you have laid out a lot. What I meant was it is good that you worked on something you want to do, rather than take a cookie-cutter routine. It may look different than some basic layouts, but it is centered around improving big lifts, and it is something designed for you by you (with some outside influence, obviously) based on your own experiences.

It is good to see people get creative using their OWN knowledge and think in terms of designing a routine, rather than just following a routine. The whole point of learning is to reach a point where you can look at something, see the underlying principles, take some influence, then make it work for you.

Ah, okay. You sounded rather unhappy with it initially, and I figured you were a big proponent of the 5x5 routines around here, or didn't like some of my exercise choices. I think the routine will suit me well if I enjoy it - who knows, I might not actually like traning 4x a week - 3x always fit nicely. We'll see.

I am a big proponent of 5x5 routines, but only because they are a good way to up big lifts and an easy, almost idiot-proof way to teach others about planning and training.....not necessarily because they are "5x5 routines"....what you arrived is the ultimate goal in mind when steering someone to a 5x5 routine, and that is the ability to design your own routine with planning and progress in mind.

I've consulted a numerologist and verified that 5x5 is indeed magic and only second to the famous Fibonacci sequence (which is suboptimal for weight training anyway as the reps get high too fast and you can't do 1RM lifts that often). So where the golden ratio fails - Starr and 5x5 are there to pick up the slack. Sometimes I feel I can get stronger just chanting it over a low flame next to a squat rack. :)

I used to also think it was 'idiot-proof' or very close but I've realized that the concepts of training and actually planning it are so foreign to people these days that it's almost a forced unlearning process to dump the crap out of their heads first before they can see clearly. Generally this happens during the program when upon realizing it works and they are actually better than before they began, a moment of lucidity overcomes them and they see it in the basic simplicity from which it was crafted. At that point it's easy and everything falls into place, but before that it's a tangled web of theory, unending questions, and moronic interpretation. Sort of like explaining to someone from a physiological view, why the testicles are a vulnerable area and have them argue it with you. It's a lot easier to kick them in the nuts once and make them a bit more open and receptive to that line of thought. This cynisism mostly comes from spending too much time on bb.com but it is important to realize that stereotypes, although unfair, do exist for a reason and the word musclehead is mostly associated with bodybuilding.

By the way MC, I originally blamed my job for my injury, but once I thought about it, I realized something: even after having the bulging discs, my job wasn't that painful to my back. It would get tender some times, but I'd imagine that to be normal. I think it was more the combination of the lower back loading from the dual-factor program I idiotically tried to leap in to, and my job. Starting all that at once was a recipe for disaster. I can almost say, though, that I'm glad it happened. I've been forced to learn so much since then.

And now I'm just too awesome. :) God, pseudo-arrogance is fun.
