Problems with shrugs..

It seems my grip cannot accomodate what I need to really hit my trapazoids...

I don't even know how much I can do because my hands start failing pretty quickly after like 90lb DBs (I've also seen some people just use an olypic bar on the rack), which is very easy in terms of the actual lift, but my grip is shit it looks like.

Any advice?

train your grip - hold on to the dbs as long as you can after shrugs for example with out doing reps anymore. farmer walk works too or doing chinups and after you are done hang onto the bar...

gota do 2 things:

1) use opposite grips ( 1 hand over bar, 1 hand under bar)
2) by lifting chalk (get some on your hands and the bar will lock in on your skin great for making callis)

if your losing 90lb db's you have some really weak gripyou might want to do somegrip training.. also get rid of db's and use the barbell..

Also, while I am not a big proponent of straps on traditionally 'contested' lifts, there is absolutely nothing wrong with shrugging with straps, you're overloading the upper back, not training the grip, the upper back can handle lots more weight and abuse than your grip.

?????

Agreed with BiggT - use straps. However, it sounds like your grip is a pretty big relative weakness, so you could probably benefit from training it anyway.

LoL @ CS.

Wanna' discuss grip training??? Heck, just start doing pullups and stay away from the pulldown machine. That'll help right there. And deadlifts w/o straps. Wrap a thick towel around the bars that you lift with and grab onto the towel rather than the bar . . . the increased thickness will build your grip/forearms. There's a gazillion ways to train grip. Honestly though, just time with freeweight barbell exercises will build grip for general lifting purposes. It's hard to shrug w/out straps though b/c the weights can get so heavy.

I wonder if we could make a Sticky Comprehension Test a prerequisite for posting in this forum...

A small minority of the people at this website have this compulsion with getting extremely irritated when someone new asks a question which may already have been addressed. Get over it. Is it costing you any money? Do you have to read it? Does a fairy lose her wings everytime someone posts a question that's already answered?

Really, I do apologize for this gargantuan imposition. No one else seems to have bothered. Actually, maybe a lot of people were bothered, but unlike you, they showed some restraint. Really, this doesn't hurt you in any way. Every person is unique. Had I not posted here, I wouldn't have known that 90lbs is weak for a grip. Despite what you might think, not everyone aspires to a life as a bodybuilder. This is not common knowledge as far as I know.

For those of you who have taken the time to advance my knowledge, thank you.

See!!??! See what you get, Larry? Do you see what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass!!??!!

This is another reminder of the delay, on you part, into the BE RUDE To THAT SHIT!!!1! administration.

Took your advice guys. Shrugged about 210 no problem with olympic bar. Did overhand/underhand which made it easier, but my grip is still not strong enough. I'm doing exercises to improve it.

Thanks a lot guys, if I had any karma to give out I would.

I have really slopped shoulders... I guess this is really going to contribute to that? I have pretty wide shoulders when I stand up straight, and I am certainly not a no-neck, but I'd like to get a more square look. Are shrugs going to prevent this?

over under for shrugs....

no.

you are working with an internally rotated shoulder and one externally rotated shoulder. how do you think the balance will be muscularly?

How does this affect arm/shoulder/back development when used for deads? Should I be swapping grip sometimes to stop asymmetries developing?

Where is that from, lol??? Regardless, it made me laugh for about 10-15 min non-stop at work.

ideally i would. arm/sh/back development from deads is a side benefit of deadlifts, not its primary goal. with shrugs your primary goal is to train the trapezius. think about if you did a bench press with one elbow flared and one elbow tucked. thats essentially what you are doing. alternating would be the best bet if you have to do an alternate grip.
