Problems with shrugs..

ideally i would. arm/sh/back development from deads is a side benefit of deadlifts, not its primary goal. with shrugs your primary goal is to train the trapezius. think about if you did a bench press with one elbow flared and one elbow tucked. thats essentially what you are doing. alternating would be the best bet if you have to do an alternate grip.
