Power cleans

estropes

New member
Hey does anyone around here do Power cleans anymore? I've notice that exercise is not performed at all. Way back in High School (5 years ago) I played football and we did them all the time. Now I belong to a gym, and every thing I do them people look at me like I'm stupid or weird (and I'm not even yelling and screaming like the idiots benching 135). I'm the only one in the place that does them.

One time a young guy came up to me and asked what I was doing, I explained...he did a set and couldn't believe how hard they were. That was the last and only other time I've seen anyone doing them.

Anyone else with similar experience? Are they "Out of fashion" or something?

yeah i did in highshool

the just work to many muscle groups for most people to do them on one particular workout..... plus most people dont perform them properly and they hurt themselves.

i did them not so long ago in a strength routine........great for explosive power and an all body exercise...damn hard too but a personal favorite......separates the men from the boys!!!!!

I do them either with a log or with a 2" bar.

i herd that... everyone wants to Look strong.

there one of y fav lifts..u can variate them as hang, or rack cleans also.

thats because most people are more concerned with looking strong rather than developing strength. continue doing them. along with deads, squats and presses, your body will thank you over the long haul.

I just want to look strong. I try not to do anything which will possibly cause any kinds of injury. I just want to look pretty and pick up the chicks. :)

There are 3 different versions I do... I do which ever one strike my fancy at the time.

Start with a light weight if you've never done them before.

Start with the bar on the floor.
Squat down in front of it. Hold the bar and stand, then do a standing Row, at the top of this movement flip your hands under. Now just do the reverse. It's all one movement, it all has to flow... it's a quick CONTROLLED movement.

Now the two other ways.

Use the same movement as above, but start out standing. This limits your leg movement.

Other. From the top of the movement go into a standing military press.

Hope this helps.

I started to do them about 3-4 weeks ago.

I had done Clean and Press before but never just a clean.

I have only seen one other person do them in my gym.

He is a past football player turned strongman.

I don't have anyone watch my technique.

I just try to get it up to where I could press it and then reverse it back. I do hang cleans I guess.

I started doing them to fill in my middle traps / upper middle back.

I have decent back - see my avatar :)

But I need to improve middle back/traps.

What kind of weights are you guys throwing around?

I feel like a wuss finishing with about 155 for 8 reps :(

My buddy does them with like 245-265lbs

After reading your post...and several other of your post. I must ask the question posed to Batman.

Where do you get such wonderful toys....

a power clean isn't really a hard movement at all and you don't do standing rows whoever said that. But on the flipside its not as easy as some are describing it, as an olympic style weightlifter I can tell you that there is a lot of science behind it. I would elaborate but its just too much to cover in a post and learning or teaching it is really a hands on thing.

estropes: I own a 700+lb tire, sled, thick bar, small atlas stone....and that's about it for implements. I make do with everything else and rig things together with chain or harness.

I also try to travel to train whenever I can. I have 22 hours of school and a weekend class, so not much free time to get a lot in. This past weekend I trained in a barn and a field with a few other strongmen about 4 hours away. Not many people around here train strongman...but maybe after I bring home some recognition soon...it will pick up.

Meso...

Yea I know it's not exactly a standing row, but I was trying to describe it. It's hard to describe something, it's much easyier to show people something. So I was just trying to put a mental picture out there. How would you describ it?

I personally would call it a very explosive shrug. actually my coach says that when the arm bends the power ends. Also there is a lot of hip action, you really do have to learn it first hand. lots of little things that aren't that hard to do but just have to be there.

I only do hang cleans, followed by a jerk, when I set up for my overhead squats.

I'm going for 190 tomorrow....
