so does being tired, talking on the cell phone etc.
I have driven drunk for 200 miles at a clip. I have driven home from places after 10 hours of drinking. I've been over .30 and hit the road.
Nothing happened. When I finally got my DUI, the original stop was for speeding (the classic non-DUI indicator) and I passed two of the three roadside tests. (The one I failed was administered incorrectly)
A few hours later, back at the station, I breathed a .17, roughly twice the legal limit. I was probably about .20 when I was stopped.
Proud of it? Not really.
Alcohol effects people differently. Speeding is a cause in more fatalities than intoxication. Why the double standard?
DUI has gotten out of control. The original BAC threshold was .15, as recommended by the AMA. States cut it to .10 and then to .08. Some states have gone .06 (like three beers)
A fair systemw would be two tiered - a ticket for DUI traffic stops, anda more severe punishment for DUI accidents.
The current system is tantamount to punishing weapons registration violators and murderers the same way.
