These are what come to mind immediately:

1) Land on earth is at a premium. There are very few resources. However, at Martin's birthday party, they're using plastic forks for the birthday cake.

2) Martin is frozen cryogentically. The doctor says he's a lost cause. Then, MIRACUOUSLY, he's revived. There was no explanation.

3) When playing in his bedroom with David, Martin is wearing leg brackes as did Forest Gump ("Run Forest! Run!) in one scene. In the next scene, he's at the swimming pool but without braces.

4) The martins (I was hysterical by this point) tell David that if he's lonely, they'll bring back people to play with him. Subsequently, they tell him they can bring back the dead only for one day. That seemed kind of cruel to me.

Any thoughts?

if that's all the plot flaws/holes you found, you must have been sleeping through half of it :)

i honestly was expecting and hoping for it to be better... oh well...

I was thinking of seeing this movie. So, in your opinion May, is it worth it?

Warik recommended it to me so I went. It was interesting, I guess. The first 1/3 of the film had me fascinated. The second 1/3 kind of fell off track. And I was bored during the last 1/3.

I give it a relucantant thumbs up. I think maybe I should have gone to see "Palmetteo" instead.:)

I agree with May.

The first 1/3 was fascinating. I was really hooked. I wish it had continued with this concept and theme of intergrading Mecas into human life.

The second 1/2 was sort like Blade Runner / Thunderdome combo. Nice but not really all that important.

The last 1/3 (yes I was hysterical at this point too May), was worth walking out on.

What I could not figure out, the aliens told him he was the last only surviving because of being frozen. Well EVERYTHING was frozen, so what happened to the rest of the Mecas? There was a whole production line of them just 20 minutes prior.

I never figured out how the human son came back either. He was SUPPOSE to be a lost cause.

If not for the beginning, I would say the movie sucked. I was ready to kick his blue fairy seeking ass at the end though.

OK:

Land is a premium and resources are scarce: Well, what was used to make those "plastic" forks? You don't know they were plastic as we know it. Technology and the resources we can utilize continually advance. Uhh...take David for one example of that.

Martin was frozen: This makes the couple a perfect fit for David. They didn't think Martin would be able to be cured, but that didn't mean he couldn't be given breakthroughs, etc.

Martin and his braces: Time passes. He was wheeled into the house just a few scenes beforehand. Each subsequent scene showed progress in his recovery.

Martians? They were robots, created by robots originally created by humans before we became extinct. It is a robotic world at that point. The one day thing was pretty goofy, but I guess Spielberg didn't want to show some kind of rapid deterioration that would be more believable.

don't blame the kid, he made that movie worth watching, he played the part well... he can't help the writing/directing/lack of intelligent editing...

did you know that kid didn't blink once throughout the whole movie? and he always moved his eyes before his head when looking at things... that lil kid rocks... i hope he gets an oscar or something for that movie...

No doubt, he is freakin' amazing. If he's raised right by his parents, he may turn out to be a once in a generation kind of acting talent.

Was also expecting a decent movie and couldn't believe how bad the plot was.
