PLer Squats vs Oly style... quote

why do PLers and especially the whole westside contingent say that their athletes are stronger in the squat than olympic athletes?

If you take a 1000lbs squatter and ask him to full squat 500 he can do it...it's warmup weight for him, but if you ask a 500lbs olympic squatter to do 1000lbs PL squat he would get crushed.

i don't think that at all is an accurate analogy, no matter how knowledgable dave tate is. what if you compared a 500lbs PL'er to a 500lbs oly squatter? the PL'er is not stronger than the oly athlete. similarly, if you took a 1000lbs PLer and a 1000lbs oly squatter (in my dreams) and compared them.

an olympic full squat is a disadvantaged lift compared to a PLer squat in terms of leverage, yes? plus, one only goes to parallel (i don't know why people still call it "rock bottom").

so if the average trainee can say, squat 300lbs, and can squat 400 PL'er style does that make him stronger than the athlete that can squat 350 oly style?

what about olympic elite super heavyweights that can squat in the 850s with a pause at the bottom?

discuss please, i don't understand why this quote is so often used when it is not a level playing field we are talking about.

(curgeo i took the quote from what you posted in the smith squat. i'm not calling you out or anything, i'm just not going to reword it :))

PL squats use the bigger, stronger muscles in the leg. So PL squats teaches you to squat big (and properly) I guess. I stopped Oly squats and started PL squats for that reason. Oly squats tend to use more quads.

Depending on the federation you lift in is how deep you have to squat. USAPL squats hips below knees just like an oly squat. Some of the other feds you just have to have hip to knee line parallel. I've seen video of Ed Coan ATF squatting 975 like it's childsplay, and no oly guy can boast that especially at a bodyweight of 240.

As for the quote I think it is in reference to if a 1000lb squatting pler did 500lbs he could easily do it as deep as the oly squatters, whereas an oly squatter with the same strength level at 500lbs would get crushed by 100lbs even though he can do 500lbs as many times as the pler.

So which is better?

Full squats or PL squats to parallel or slightly below parallel?

For all around leg developement and the most carry over to athletics the full squat wins right? But for pure strength the PL wins?

It's still a knucklehead comparison. It's like asking who could high-pull (chest heigh) the most - a top deadlifter or a top OLY lifter.

The answer is not an easy one. Simply put whichever one better suits your needs. If you aren't going to do oly exercises then you don't really need to squat that way. I do all my squats ass to the floor so I am getting the benefit of more hip/hamstring work of doing pl squats while working a bigger range of motion. Whereas the oly squat will work more on the quads but that is what Zercher/front squats are for in my book.

how do you go ass to floor with a PL squat? The wide stance kinda prevents it.

Shouldn't unless you have flexibility problems, plus I don't squat with a super wide stance like some guys to. My feet are just a little outside the shoulders.

Super Rice your training is on the right track..a lot more people here should follow your lead...

i repsect a lift that is done to whatever federation rules be it oly rules or WPO rules..its like comparing apples to oranges and we could sit and argue this because they are not the same..i just happen to be slanted towards PL style so maybe my post in the smith squat thread was misleading..

i have respect for regular gym rats like you SR who are doing Oly squats and doing them right..If you or someone wants to squat Pl style thats fine just do them the proper way and dont try to show off..

ive tried helping this one kid at my gym who insists on squatting 315 off a 20 inch box hes about 5'8 lol..why? i dont have a clue but he wants to say he squats 315..to me its stupid id rather see someone like that use 185 or 225 on a much lower box and actuallywork the proper muscles..

i think i got off track lol
