ELITE MENTOR
EF VIP
I work in the most retarded office.
i LOVE what I do, but not who i do it for. The owner micro-manages, yells, curses, and changes his mind every hour and expects people to follow along. I'm the only one left who isn't in sales, production, or an executive officer. I work long hours and haven't gotten any of the bonus i was told i would get, which was a large chunk of my salary.

then last night, the heavens parted and I looked at monster.com

there's a job on there that i'm PERFECT for. It's 12 miles from my house (if you knew where i live, you'd know that's amazing because i'm not near ANYTHING), but it's 12 miles going against traffic. (it takes me an hour to get to work now because of traffic)

and it pays $10k - $20k more per year and is an executive position.

omg, i want this job.

So you are firing yourself?

Good move. :) LOL Change is good. I would NEVER tolerate that type of treatment from anyone, let alone a work situation. I had a nutjob boss like that back when I worked for Merril Lynch over 20 years ago. I hated my job. I hated my one boss. I hated the c*nts I worked with. Then I got to go home to my ex.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh when I think of the nonsense I put up with when I was in my early twenties.

BTW - did the sample arrive yet?

it did... i thought i pm'd you about it, but now that i'm writing this I think my internet connection had slowed to a crawl at that point and it never went.
I did get it- thank you so much. I have something to send to you, but i never got to the post office. i will though. :)
i'll be using the sample on sunday.

anyway, i won't leave here until i have another job, and I HATE switching jobs, but this is the worst office i've ever worked in. The least professional, the most stressful, and with the least amount of 'benefits' (i'm not even talking about health benefits).

You don't have to send me anything in return, but I do appreciate the gesture. :) I am just glad that I happened to have a sample of the exact product you will be needing; very serendipitous events. I hope the product will perform as it was represented to me!

When I tell you that this exboss from Merrill Lynch was a screaming, crazy, harpy bitch - I know you know I'm not exaggerating. She used to go through assistants in as little as A DAY. I lasted, if memory serves like 2/3 months.

Nothing worse than people who are belligerent, arguementative, shrieking, degrading, negative and who get off on grinding others into the ground. Really leaves you to wonder how they were parented. :(

This guy yells at people who are clearly doing a great job, work hard, and who you would trust with the most detailed, intensive work. why yell at them??? you couldn't find better people to do the job, so if something wasn't done the way the boss wanted it, who's fault is that?
Lately he's begun to actually like me, which is nice, but it still makes me nervous that there will be a down swing.

good fucking luck with monster.com in a recession.

no shit.
there's not a lot of jobs in my field (marketing), that I'm qualified for (there's different kinds of marketing), that are within an hour's drive. I would even drive further if it was worth it, but I rarely see anything.

Times change, people don't.

You WILL get the short end of the stick eventually. I was let go (via text message to my husband LOL) last year for doing an EXCELLENT job.

Ha - I just heard the news today that their call center closed down TOTALLY. Frankly, I am surprised it took so long. :whatever:

I told the old man to put the word out that we are hiring so I can interview the doucheknuckles who screwed with me. Give them the dressing down of a lifetime then sorta offer them a position. And if they are stoopid enough to accept I will smile as I shake their hands saying, "You didn't honestly think that I would EVER hire you. Did you?"

I wouldn't do this to all the people. Hell if there is someone that is competent I would love to have them with us. This privilige will be reserved only for the dumbest of the dumb/most gaping assholes of the bunch.

Yea, I have a mean vengefull streak like that. I LOVE to fuck with people who need to be fucked with.

it probably won't happen like that, but i would totally want it to if i were you.
i'm going to feel bad about leaving here when the time comes- mostly because i'm SO needed, and i like most of the people i work with. I got a sales status report this morning and we are doing better this quarter, so that's very positive. hopefully it will translate to my bonus and a raise, but we'll see. constantly worrying about losing my job is very stressful.

Feel you. Hope it works out.

You and I seem to have the same boss
Only I've been working for him for 32 years (my dad)

it's crazy, but you learn coping skills to deal with their personalities. Yet, at the end of the day you are one stressed out, nervous, self esteem crushed SOB

good luck

i worked for my father for 14 years... he is bipolar and so similar to my current boss that they could be the same person.
when i was on my interview here, they asked if i have a problem dealing with difficult people. i mentioned that my last boss (my father) was bipolar and the president and hiring manager looked at eachother and smiled. I should have known then.

I applied for this job and wrote a good coverletter. I even got in that i'm local to that area (it's actually another state but i'm right near the border).
i even love the town that it's in- this totally artsy, gay, historical town.

I also worked for my parents for many years and my father was an extremely volatile man. Just one of the many reasons why I HATE to raise my voice ever and when I am upset (whether it is the other person that is upsetting me or I am just plain upset) I walk away.

I can't stand people who yell, scream, berate, belittle and treat people around them like they pulled those people out of their asses (Magyar expression but I think ya'll can surmise the meaning). It's not acceptable in personal interactions and less so in professional interactions.

Even though I do not have a temper, I get upset a lot as I have a lot to be upset about. But I do my level best to keep away from the entire planet when I am Negative Nancy. I'd rather enrich someone's day then let my rain fall on someone else's parade.

1) Get out of this shitty place where the owner clearly doesn't care about the employees. THat's NOT a place you want to work at.
2) You wrote a good cover letter expressing your enthusiasm for this position due to it's job, location, etc. That's good.
3) If you don't hear back, call back and talk to the secretary. Refer to her by name and follow up. Keep expressing your enthusiasm for this job and DEMAND (nicely) you want this interview/job.
4) When you have your interview, first off blow them away with your skills/knowledge so they know you can do the job. Then once that is set, show them ENTHUSIASM you are for the company, job, your desire to stay there a long time, work wel lwith others etc. YOu can literally "force" them to hire you by giving them zero excuses not to. Of course don't b.s. or lie or say you know something that you don't. One lie = credibility gone.

good luck. Getting jobs == 90% inter-personnal skills and body language. 10% = Having the skills and experience.

thank you. :)
i usually ace interviews, but with this job market, there's 10 times the amount of applicants.
i hope they call me, but i'm going to follow up on wednesday.

tanks!
i have to get called for the interview...

Good. Now go in there and smile and nicely DEMAND you get the job. Leave them no option BUT to hire you. Trust me, companies LIKE to hire enthusiastic positive people who live close-by. Right off the bat prove you can do the job, blow them away with your enthusasism and asking questions that assume u already go the job (so where would I sit? How many vacation days? Do you have big monitors?). Then in the end interview the client so it doesn't look like you're desperate for the job - act like you also want to kjnow more about them. Comapnies are ALWAYS proud to talk about themselves and what they do. Shows that you care.

Most people are nervous. Those who are enthusiastic, confidant and positive are the ones who nail the jobs over and over again.

btw: DO keep in your mind you may go there and NOT like the job/company, etc. Don't get too cavalier, be prepared for this.

well, i wouldn't ask about vacation days on an interview. I've interviewed too many people who asked questions about raises and vacations to make me worried that they will be more concerned about getting what they are entitled to than they are about doing a good job.

i did get a response from human resources. It was a form type of email that thanked me for my resume submission and that they will be calling for interviews by mid july.

it always takes so friggin' long.

Call up HR and talk to them. Get to know them on a name by name basis and mention your concern. They're trained to talk like robots on the phone until someone talks to them normally and makes it sound personal. Remember, those who hustle while the rest of the pack don't, get the rewards in life.

DO a take-away, should work every time. Turn the interview around so that the person that is interviewing you should tell you why you should come to work for them.
