Plasma vs. LCD vs. ..........

I was thinking about buying my son a flat panel for his bedroom and was leaning towards an LCD, ONLY because I will be connecting his PC to it. However, with current technology were it is, LCD's and Plasma's are now neck and neck depending upon model/make etc... That being said, I still firmly believe that Plasma has the better over-all picture quality.........until Mitsubishi decided to fuck around with lasers and shit, damn them!

What do you guys have, what are going to buy next?
 
Mitsubishi makes the clearest big screens I have seen... They are also the most expensive. The type of tv you want really depends on what you are going to be using it for.

What is your son going to do?
Video games?
tv?
dvd?

and what input sources are you going to use?
HD cable?
HD Satelite?
Standard tv?
Blue ray?
HDDVD(although it is basiclly dead)?

many options and many choices, depending on the application, the lighting in the room, whether you require 1080p or regular 720p, do you want interlaced or progressive technology, Full HD, size of display, inputs, etc...

This is what i do for a living btw...

Pretty much, not much difference nowadays betwen liquid crystal display and plasmas for home theatre application, bedroom appl. etc...

If you need to connect it to the pc, you need an RGB/VGA port/15-pin. Pretty much most flat panels have that.

If you need high def., you need to get 1080p, with blue ray if u wanan play 1080p 16:9 apect ratio movies, or your cable provider should be able to provide you with high def. signal, and you should already have a high def. cable, i.e. monster, rapid run impact accoustic, mustang, etcc...

if budget is an issue, you'd want to consider panasonic plasmas, they're pretty much the cheapest. Offcourse you can get LG, which are price competitive, or some entry level stuff like Proton or Maxent, but that latter is crap.

You can always lean towards the higher end stuff like NEC displays, and some of the Toshiba ones.

Let me knw what you require, and i'll give you my prof. advice with links and information on them.

Sony tvs aren't even that great anymore. My roomate has a 56" sony and the picture is nice but no where near as nice as many other tvs I have seen. Includeing my old JVC LCOS 56" and my current Phillips 47" LCD

Mostly PC, games, movies, cartoons etc...

The source is HD satellite with a 1080i upconvert dvd player.

He is only 3 years old so I am not going too crazy with it, so i am only looking at 32" screens which lwould leave plasma out anyway.

You do this for a living...I know ur all the way in Cananda... but do you have any good hook ups?
 
Are you going to have sunlight in the rooms?

LCD's have come a logn way, and it's hard to find faults in them now.

Go to best buy and "look" at all of them. That's the easiest way to choose.

I'm a distributor, so i can't sell to an end user. I could only sell to retailer or middle-men basically. You just need to know what you want. I could give you choices depending on what you want.

If its only for your 3 year old I dont think it really matters what you get. By the time he knows the diff it will be old tech anyway.

It really comes down to what type of person you are...

Are you a top of the line kind of guy?

Or are you just looking for a decent tv. I think just about any tv will be good for you. Your son prolly wouldn't know the diff between true 1080p and a 720p tv that isn't a true 720 resolution.

I would save cash and just go with a lower end tv.
 
Btw, as the flat panel becomes bigger, LCD are more expensive that plasma. LCD technology is more expensive to manufacture.

I am set for my bedroom and home theater, I know the difference in the technologies and what they work best for, and in what settings they should be in. Lighting it not as big a factor for Plasma as it was a year ago, also, burn in is no longer a "real" threat for plasma either. LCD has made many advancements and improvements also. I am leaning towards LCD for my son because it will best work with what will be used with it.

What threw me was when I was looking around for a tv for my son I stumbled across a new technology that supposedly stomps LCD AND Plasma. Which brought the question with the new technology available leveling the playing field between the two technologies, I wonder what people like now?

Maybe my question came off wrong....I am not wondering what to get, I have that uncontrol. For what he will be using it for and the fact that he is 3, a 720p LCD will suit just fine. I was more curious as the technologies have advanced what people are liking now, maybe as opposed to 3 years ago. And also what is known about the new tech like LaserVue.

Got cha, Maybe I miss-read your original post. I personally love my LCD. I got it in sept of 08. I also think LCD would be better for ur son than Plasma.

As far as the Laservue... this is the first I have heard/seen of it. Sounds like its going to be a great new format, and I am excited to see it in person. The current Mitsubishi tvs look SEK-C best I have seen... but with that beautiful picture comes a hefty price tag... I can only assume the Laservue will have the same Mitsu price tag.

I'm happy with my Visio Plasma, had it a year now and never had an issue. Picture quality is great, 360 looks good (has some ghosting if left on the xbox menu to long). For the money I'm happy, I would buy another one.

Nice call, I have been reading up on this company and believe it or not, Vizio will not be considered an "off-brand" in the very near future.

I just bought my son the 32" LCD 720p, looks great.
 
I have a 56" Toshiba DLp and love it so far. Got a sweet deal on it too.

What you think of those alcatraz?

It's a good unit, though I'm not very fond of rear projection technology. It's got all your basic inputs, 15-pin, composite, component, s-vid, etc....dual HDMI is what would get me looki at that model...it's not 1080p, which is another reason i'd choose something else...perhaps a panasonic plasma 1080p with dual hdmi.

How much did u pay for it?

you can get a 58' panasonic plasma, non 1080p offcourse, for around 1600$.

But what you got is pretty good. It serves its purpose. How do you like the picture quality?

Love it! Best damn TV I've had, but my last was an old school 60" sony projection that weighed about 200 lbs. this thing is thin as fuck and weighs about 50 lbs.

when you upgrade to a 1080p Full HD Plasma display 65', which will be around $7000, you will be amazed!!!!

plasma is better... however....

it does generate heat, much more heat than a lcd.. something to consider..

my 42" that is 4 yrs old now does heat up, i live in minnesota, so it's free heat for me, but in a small room, it would be too much..
 
My buddy, against my advice, put a 37" plasma in his bedroom. He fell asleep with it on and when he woke up it was 6 degress warmer in his room.

Awesome. Love the Panasonic Plasmas. Best bang for the buck IMO. I helped my sister get the 50 inch X80u plasma about a month ago. She got it with a surround sound system and install for $1550. not bad. Excellent PQ with Verizon fios HD.

Good stuff man.

Alcatraz, are you familiar with the Onkyo Integra DTC-9.8 pre/pro?

no image retention? burn-in? did he have video on or a still image? technology has advanced, but you can still fuck up your plasma with image retention. i had a client get "sony playstation" printed on his plasma through "burn in" because he left it on for two days....dumb fuck

Image processing?

We only deal in pretty much very high end stuff....for image processing and things like that, I'd recommend Barco products.

I never dealt with the Onkyo
 
shit i'm not as rich as most EF'ers but I do have a 60" sony lcd projection tv. It has 1080 and all that. Plus it was on sale.
 
I think if you have a TV in the basement with no light Plasma beats LCD hands down. I don't know anything about the new laser technology to which you are referring, though.

For now, nothing beats the Pioneer KURO plasma TV's. IMO they're not worth the upgrade from the Panasonic just because of price, but if money were no object... definately the KURO from Pioneer.

Also, with HD these days 42 inch TV's can go anywhere, unless you have a very small room. 42 inch Panasonic plasma $700-$900. Can't beat that.

NEC and LG have great plasmas. The technology has gone far bro. I don't liek Pioneer very much, it's not entry level, but it comes behind brands like Panasonic, NEC, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, LG, etc....

I'm not really referring to the brand itself, but the fact that Pioneer makes the best Plasma TV available today. You are the one in the field, but it is common knowledge now that the KURO US the best TV made. There's really no contest. It's just about second place. It's all about the 'black levels' and Pioneer has mastered it with the KURO line. 'KURO' means 'black' btw in Japanese. They hit it dead on this time. Game over.

I have heard the plasmas are bad for gamers. Major reason why I went with LCD, because I play games more than watch TV. This does not mean that the picture is bad with games on a plasma, it just wrecks the TV.
