Planning a day in DC

No worries on legality...you can walk around the monument area freely. I wouldn't suggest getting too close to the reflecting pool in the wee hours, though, unless you like walking into thick clouds of mosquitos. Stick to the paths. But yeah...it's really tranquil at night.
lol that would suck to do in the summer, but in the winter when its freezing the bottom of it is real slimy

Wait, you've actually gotten IN the reflecting pool?

All previously mentioned stuff and make sure to see the National Archives that hose the original Declaration of Independence and US Consititution.

yeah its not flat at the edges its angled so you can slip and fall in of your not careful

and as for parking garage close times, all that means is that its free parking, at least all the ones iv been to.

they arnt gunna lock your car in, but the attendent might go home letting you out for free. sometimes ill park and just get my car after all the attendents have left

What do they do, leave the gates up? I've only had to worry about parking in g-town a few times (now I know someone who has a townhouse like a block from M street and I just park there lol), and I was always nervous about not being able to get my car out.

they leave the gates up or they just have a late night attendent to let cars out but stop charging after a certain time

yeah that and be careful not to get robbed or mugged on the mall at night time. fuckkn crime around here.

Nobody mentions Arlington National Cemetary when they talk about visiting DC.

Its a shame because you will be very moved by the hushed atmosphere and the respect that even tourists show when walking about this place.
Take the guided tour tram things if you don't have a lot of time because its a hike from the parking area to the main stuff you want to see. (kennedy, unknowns, etc).
Or you can walk around and see cool monuments and gravesites from the Civil war era to rows and rows of perfectly alligned crosses. Even see funerals that are going on today with the distant gun fire that will give you goose bumps.
Will give you much insight and respect for the sacrafices made over the years as an american.
