Planning a day in DC

Any recomendations? Our familys going to Maryland, and we'll spend a day in DC. The age range is from kiddies to oldies.
One place on the must see list is the National Gallery, cause I get boner over old paintings.

1. Holocaust museum. Maybe a little hard for younger kids to understand) I loved it (the pile of shoes will make you cry)
2. National Museum of American History
3. National Air and Space Museum
4. National Museum of Natural History

That's how your rate em? That sounds like more than can be done in a day, are they close to each other?

holocaust museum for sure. That's only historical thing I saw when I was there. I had conferences so didn't hvae a lot of time but that was definately worth it

All the museums close at 5:30. So you're going to have a good part of your night free.

I give all the museums I listed a 10, but that is just me. You may think otherwise. There are more then what I listed. If you want to see everything in one day you better get up early and walk real fast. Some of them are close together and others are a nice walk.

You will have to go again, you missed so much.

I go every year. I was lucky to see the 911 museum, which is on tour right now. I am not sure if it will be put back in the smithsonian or not. That was a very hard thing to walk through. I am not sure I see one dry eye or heard anyone talking.

DC sucks, you can look at all the monuements on the internet without having to sweat your balls off outside.

go to baltimore aquarium since thats indoors, then take the kiddos over to ESPN zone right by and let them play some games, while u play too, i always play the quarter back game and throw the balls as hard as i can at the reciever player's heads and try and break the game and ruin it for everybody else.

or get high and go to the air and space or spy museum.

or if you wanna workout with me or have a meetup give me a let-know. we can work muscles together

Yeah, I'm not real interested in that one either. The spy museum looks cool, the natural history museum looks cool, they got a bug zoo.
DC might not be a big deal to you, but it'll be fun for us. Maybe I'll stop by the white house and show Bush my hairy ass.
We're kind of doing the whirl wind tour, but that'd be cool to WO if I can sneak away. Where you at Sub?

There's one painting on the lower level that I LOVE. I can't remember the name/room/period, though, so I'm useless. But it has this strange 3D effect that is almost startling.

I live in the DC area but it's hard for me to tell you from a tourist POV, and even harder when they vary so much in age range. See the monuments at night if you can, and the korean war memorial at twighlight - you'll understand once you see it for yourself. The women will love shopping in georgetown, but don't try to park or drive down there. Tons of great places to eat, especially in georgetown and dupont. :whatever:

btw, I think the natural history museum is still closed for renovations....could be wrong, though.

It's the american history museum that's closed. I was thinking of checking out Georgetown, no parking huh? Is there a train line that goes in? Any good moderate priced restaurants you could recommend?

im near friendship heights metro stop and my gym is the bethesda metro stop.

if u guys are excited about DC i suggest saving the momuments for night time. im not sure how legal it is, but if you go at night you can walk around everything, its not hot or crowded at all. its really nice.

and you could probably do air and space, and natural history in one day,(right near eachother) and then spy museum a different day

That's right...I knew it was one of the two.

Parking in georgetown makes me want to drive my car off the key bridge. But yeah, the metro will get you there pretty painlessly.

What kind of food and what price per person are we thinking of as moderate?

there are a couple parking garages located in key points. you would be fine to pay a lil extra and park in a garage near there, or look around for neighborhood parking, which would suck

No worries on legality...you can walk around the monument area freely. I wouldn't suggest getting too close to the reflecting pool in the wee hours, though, unless you like walking into thick clouds of mosquitos. Stick to the paths. But yeah...it's really tranquil at night.

True...I guess I didn't think of that because most parking garages in g-town have a closing time. But they have kids, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Wait, you've actually gotten IN the reflecting pool?

All previously mentioned stuff and make sure to see the National Archives that hose the original Declaration of Independence and US Consititution.

yeah its not flat at the edges its angled so you can slip and fall in of your not careful

and as for parking garage close times, all that means is that its free parking, at least all the ones iv been to.

they arnt gunna lock your car in, but the attendent might go home letting you out for free. sometimes ill park and just get my car after all the attendents have left

What do they do, leave the gates up? I've only had to worry about parking in g-town a few times (now I know someone who has a townhouse like a block from M street and I just park there lol), and I was always nervous about not being able to get my car out.

they leave the gates up or they just have a late night attendent to let cars out but stop charging after a certain time

yeah that and be careful not to get robbed or mugged on the mall at night time. fuckkn crime around here.

Nobody mentions Arlington National Cemetary when they talk about visiting DC.

Its a shame because you will be very moved by the hushed atmosphere and the respect that even tourists show when walking about this place.
Take the guided tour tram things if you don't have a lot of time because its a hike from the parking area to the main stuff you want to see. (kennedy, unknowns, etc).
Or you can walk around and see cool monuments and gravesites from the Civil war era to rows and rows of perfectly alligned crosses. Even see funerals that are going on today with the distant gun fire that will give you goose bumps.
Will give you much insight and respect for the sacrafices made over the years as an american.

I didn't even know Arlington was in DC. I thought it was Virginia for some reason. There's too much stuff to do over there, we're gonna have to start early.

Plus, arlington is just a little out of the way for people who are visiting DC only for the day. Depending on traffic that could tack on 30 minutes each way of driving.

Yeah, and we are coming from the Easton area, and that's like, 1.5hrs?
And my sister's dumb ass always takes so long to get out the door, I think I'm going to have to whip some people into shape.
