Pitbull owners.......?

I was considering getting a pitbull in the near future. Any owners here ever have any problems with keeping them undercontrol?

How did she act around strangers? Also, are male pitbull much more territorial then females?
 
It really depends on who you get the dog from. The problem with Pits, and Rottweilers (I have two) is that they became so popular with irresponsible breeders looking for tough dogs to gaurd property and the like.

Pits can be great dogs, but if you plan on getting one I would thoroughly research your options in terms of breeders, make sure you see the sire and bitch if you get a puppy, ask after both parents in terms of their history. You should also know ahead of time what training and socialization they will require.

Unfortunately for dog lovers both Rotts, Pits and now Presa Canarios (from the mauling in San Fran) have a bad reputation from irresponsible owners.

i had one when i was a kid, i loved her, but she was VERY territorial. hated all other animals, killed cats, a dog. she didn't like strangers. you couldn't even come in my room at night. she would never have hurt me, but she would have hurt someone eventually. my parents got rid of her after she bit a girl who had come to the house.

she was never abused by us. i've had friends who had pits too, and it always seemed like the females were worse. i have seen some that were as gentle as a kitten. before you get one, check on the temperment of the parents. good luck.
 
i know about pitbulls

i have 2 now had lots more then that :) there awsome dogs there not bred to be watch dogs or a guard dog ect. There bred to be nice to humans but are very animal agressive (cant be around other dogs ect) Id say do a lil reaseach before you get one. Get a book by someone like Richard Stratton read up on em and see if its the dog for you :) if u have any questions you can PM me

Don't get a pit. They are too unpredictable. They may get along good w/their owners but the last thing you need is someone else's child being attacked. They are illegal to own in the county I live in, and there is a reson for that. They can be brutal. There are so many other great breeds out there; do yourself a favor and everybody else in your neighborhood and get another breed.

Your ignorance pisses me off. Pitts are some of the greatest dogs ever. I have a year old female and she is the best dog I've ever had. My buddy has a huge 2 year old male named "Tank" that loves everyone. If you sit down, chances are, he'll flop down into your lap. Pits get a bad rap because of stupid shits that raise them to fight. That bad rap escalates and continues because of people that are stupid enough sheep to believe everything in the media. Learn something before you speak.

Paradox, if you're going to get one, find a good breeder. If they are simply raised properly, they are very intelligent, loyal, and good natured dogs that make great friends.

I agree 100%... I love dogs, but I cant think of a single good reason to own a pit bull.

If you want a big bad ass dog, get an american bulldog.
If you want a cool looking dog that is the friendliest thing in the world, get a boxer.

Pits are cool too, but like they said above, get one from the wrong blood line and you are playing with fire.

The average starting price is $500 for a decent bloodline. Read up on this breed first so you know what to look for. I've had as many as 3 at one time and will never own another breed.

Cool, bro. I love my Rotts, but I have nothing against pits and think they are pretty cool dogs. I'm not sure my wife would ever let me get one, but oh well.
 
They should shoot every pit bull in the head. Those dogs sux. They were bred to fight and kill and that is what they do. A pit bull almost took my wifes eye out. After 175 stitches thankfully from god she can still see. Screw pit bulls. I don't think you should get especially because now they can even lock up the owners. Do you want to go to prison for something your stupid hostile dog did? If you have a pit bull it should be in a cage like a tiger.
 
A well bred pitbull is bred to fight yes OTHER DOGS not people. Thats why the handlers can handle them in action and not fear geting bit. any other dog would bite your hand off. Also any good breeder would kill a human agressive dog if they had one. Good dogs are where u get it. if you get one from moron's then thats the kinda dog u will have. If you get it from someone who knows what there doing then u will get a good dog do reaseach 1st. Just sad to Judge things guys when u know nothing about it at all. Kinda like the same as saying AS are drugs that make u go kill people or something. its Nuts

Putting others and your family at risk because you believe in that breed may one day have you visiting a close friend, family member, or neighbor in the hospital. :devil: This accident was more then likely your fault for not raising your dog properly. If you look at the number of dog bites\attacks on the yearly basis you will find that pits are not near the top of the list!

I ACTUALLY HAVE ONE ROTT. MY OLDEST BROTHER WHO IS A JUNKIE LOSER HAD A ROTT AND PIT. WE TOOK THEM IN 5 YEARS AGO CUZ HE WENT TO JAIL AND COULDNT TAKE CARE OF THEM. I LOVE THE PIT. HE IS NICE AS CAN BE TO PEOPLE. UGLY MUTHA FUCKA, BUT NICE. THE LITTLE DOG NEXT DOOR ACTUALLY GOT IN OUR YARD AND MANNY (THE PIT) PLAYED WITH HIM. ALL THREE DOGS ARE MALES AND FULL GROWN.

MY ROTT DOESNT LIKE THE PIT OF THE OTHER ROTT. HE WAS HERE FIRST AND THIS IS HIS HOUSE...LOL. HE STAYS IN THE HOUSE AND THE OTHERS STAY OUTSIDE/GARAGE. SOMETIMES THEY GET TOGETHER ACCIDENTALLY AND FIGHT AND ITS LIKE WW3. I BREAK IT UP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BUT ITS VERY HARD TO HANDLE MY DOG. HE IS ALSO NICE BUT LIKE I SAID, HE HATES THOSE OTHER TWO. HE LISTENS VERY WELL AS FAR AS PEOPLE GO. IF I TELL HIM TO BE COOL AND SIT, THATS WHAT HE DOES. NO MORE BARKING OR ANYTHING. BUT THREE MALE TERRITORIAL DOGS IN THE SAME HOUSE ARENT A GOOD IDEA. I DONT RECOMMEND IT. HOWEVER, WE HAD NO CHOICE.

The best education in the world is experience and seeing my wife with blood coming out of her eye and her eyelids hanging off wondering if her eye was still in there I think that is education enough. I don't think a poodle could have done what that dog did. The jaws on a pit bull are incredibily stong. I also wouldn't have a chow those are vicuous ass dogs too.

Like I said if ya'll want to own dogs like that that is ya'll's purogative but like I said the courts are starting to throw the owners of vicious dogs in jail. I hope your dog is worth spending a 10 to 20 years in the pen for.

While I understand what you are saying, your view is misguided. The point is that if you own these dogs you better be prepared to be a responsible owner. Provided you give the dog the training and socialization that the dog REQUIRES, and are responsible in terms of looking after your dog (not letting him or her off leash in public, etc.) you should be fine. The reason the courts are throwing owners in jail is because they are ultimately responsible for the care of their dogs. As an owner of a so-called "vicious" breed (Rottweilers) I am glad to see irresponsible owners jailed for not taking the time to train and properly raise their dogs. Just because you have a breed like a Pit Bull or a Rottweiler doesn't mean that you will have problems.

We have a male and a female and they get along great. They'll fight over toys occasionally, but otherwise love being around eachother.

First I appreciate you talking rationally and not acting like an asshole like that thai dude. I am sure you are a responsible owner. And I can appreciate that. But after seeing what that thing did to wife just be real wary about letting your children around one of those dogs. I mean treat it like a loaded weapon. Because that dog knew my wife since it was a puppy and it still did that to her.

I myself love dogs but I wouldn't have either a pit or rotwaller after that. I mean she could have lost her eye dude. It was one scary night.

I certainly understand why you feel the way you do. Since it was your wife that was attacked, I can easily understand how you wouldn't want to have that kind of breed.

Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepards, Akitas, etc. are not for everybody. I still believe that the essential problem is not with the inherent nature of the breeds, but with irresponsible owners who do not take responsiblity.
 
Curling, i can understand your aversion to pits after your wife's tradgedy. Respectfully though, I think you may be jumping to incorrect conclusions. It would be somewhat analogous to saying " I got robbed by a chinese guy, so all chinese guys should be in jail". I will agree some pits are vicious (as are many other breeds if not raised correctly) although, it really has much more to do with their breeding and training than their particular breed. You can train (or "mistrain") a collie or golden retriever etc. to be vicious. Unfortunately, breeds like pits and rotts have gained noteriety because a few assholes have raised them for fighting and agression. Blame the owners, not the dogs. If anything, in most cases the dogs are the victims of either irresponsible, idiotic, or vicious owners. I sincerely hope your wife has fully recovered, and good luck to the both of you.

p.s. i once owned a pomeranian and the worst it could do was chew your ankle, although it did think it was a badass and ruled the house

I am sorry your wife was attacked.
I was attacked one by a black guy with a golf club. I was wondering if they should all be shot in the head too?

I really hope this post was made out of anger.. because I own a Rott, Dobe and a mut.. I plan on adding a pit to the stable and after being around dogs my whole life I have found that there is no other breed of dog alive that likes human attention as much as the pitbull. Every pitbull alive did not attack your wife.. only one did.

Sure it was motivated out of anger but who wouldn't have the same anger if their loved one experienced the same thing. Lets say your baby is mauled by a chow. Do you think you would still have a chow? Be honest.

Also you should look into Great Danes they blow the pit bull away. They are best dogs ever for humans. Plus they are good looking dogs and pit bulls are buttass ugly.

One more question say you say another black man walking up to you with a golf club what would go through your mind? Be honest again.

Great Danes are awesome dogs. But the reason I want a pitbull is I want to have a dog that I can bring with me everywhere. Pitbulls like to hang out and travel with people. They are awesome road dogs. Not that I am on the road all the time.. but I want a dog that I can bring to work with me since mine are too big. My boss said it would be cool with him if I brought in a dog to hang out at my desk.

To be honest about my comparison...
After I was clobbered.. I was pissed and I did not like black people much. But then I realized how silly I was being. If another black guy came at me with a 9 iron.. I would simply do what I would do to a white guy coming at me.. I would try to kill him first.

My point was that, even though you have had a bad taste with pitbulls do not let that hate blind you from somthing good. I really like dogs alot and I know for certain that with pitbulls in general they are very kind easy going dogs (to humans) They are loyal to their owners and instead of hating the whole breed.. why don't you hate the sick pukes who make those dogs mean. I do.
 
I know what you saying I too was mugged by two black dudes. And I too was skeptical of black people for a while but I got over it. I too might get over the memory of that damn dog biting her but I haven't yet.

But just for the record I won't go start shooting every pit bull I see in the head(unless I am hunting then I shoot everything.)
