been having bad shoulder pain in my left shoulder. had xray and mri which neither showed any problems. PT did not help. Take mobic when needed... Shoulder pain is seriously hindering upper body workouts. Is a cortizone shot a good idea? Are they painful? How long before I can get back in gym? How long before pain will return?

By PT do you mean personal trainer or physiotherapy?

I haven't had any shots, but if your pain is persistent, it is probably the result of some sort of muscle imbalance, something structural.

Not all physios are as good as each other, you may want to see if you can find one who works with athletes or specialises in shoulders.

I know my physio who dealt with my achilles was a specialist in lower limb injuries, he also is the physio with one of the local football teams, and he kept up with all the recent developments/research for recovery, and he made a HUGE difference.

ok PT aside... what do you know about the shot?

shots are temporary leaving back in the same position u r now weeks or months later. u can only get so many cortisone shots.

get to the root of the problem and address.

Definitely.

I had a nagging pain that would go away and come back. Quick fixes are only as good as the next flair-up.

Shoulder Rehabilitation is as good a summation as I've found. It can help you self diagnose and work out a reasonable rehabilitation program you can implement in the gym. It's not a substitute for qualified medical advice, but it could be helpful until you find a doc who understands the problem.

Active Release Techniques sorted out my shoulder pains which persisted for a few years before I found the right therapy. I now have a doctor of osteopathy keep me in shape with a yearly checkup.

Seriously bro......it took me "9" months to get over a sore shoulder. Just keep your food intake(protein) up and hope for the best. Time is the best healer. If it keeps screwing with you.........you just need to take a break. IMO.

Forget the shot, like the rest said it's only a temporary fix and in the end won't help you out very much. Get a PT or try to take a rest for a little bit. It's better to not workout for a bit than to keep working out with a problematic muscle area. Good luck.

the cortizone shot is basically the opposite of an Anabolic steroid. Its a Catabolic steroid. Depending on the size of the shot and your sensitivity, it can lead to loss of muscle mass, weakness, immune degrade, etc. it's a great anti-inflmatory, but at what price for a short-term fix?
