People who say "warshing machine"

supersizeme

New member
this destroys me. i heard it today from a resident being interview on the local news. i know we have at least 2-3 members on this board who regularly crank out a "George Warshington" or "going to warsh my car, k"

does anyone know what region of the U.S. this accent comes from?

Sounds NY if I'm reading the war right but it would be more like Warshin machine. We don't pronoun the G's on any word that ends with "ing"

I go Runnin, walkin, and sometimes you can see me sprintin.

Rural Southern Missouri...............or basically anywhere south of Interstate 44 in South St. Louis County.......

they also say "warter" instead of water.

and they say "I'm going to THE Wallmart" insted of "I'm going to Wallmart."

Here they say, "I had to go to Walmarts to buy a few things."

It's sounds like we have a dozen or more when we only have one.

Gets on my nerve but what do you expect from a state that is first in only one thing in the nation.........trailers.:)

End of the appalachian chain. Durig the 1820's there was a large english migration to the states.

i was raised in st. louis and never even came close to saying "warshing machine." my older sister says "beg" instead of "bag" though, so she's got midwestern in her. my mom says, "we should've stopped when we had your sister" a lot.

I don't say it either.........

A. I'm educated.

B. I'm not a South St. Louis Hoosier.....

What do you call that storage thing that pulls out of a larger piece of furniture? You know, a "drawer."

Freaked me out when a Jersey gal called it a 'drah' instead of a 'dror'.

Up here in CT and RI they say that crap, "worsh the car", etc, but the worst is when people call a drawer a "draw" and tuna a "tuner"

speaking of that word what about people who call underwear "drawls" ?

There's even a clothing company named after a perversion of that word, "Droors"

I've heard that term used as well. I think it's a lazy way of saying chest of drawers. And "warsh" gets on my nerves.

This is where one of my mom's professors was from. An English professor at that, but he said "warsh". He said that's how they say it there. Thank God I tested that idea once and found not everyone does. :)

If I'm not careful, I tend to say "thur" instead of "there." Scouser friend from Liverpool, England, says it "thuh."
