people raising their ass during bench

..why do guys do this? im just curious, it seems like it would do more harm than good. I see so many guys in the gym, some big and in good shape, and others not so big and in good shape, loading the bar up, bringing the bar down to their chest, and then arching so much to get the weight up their ass comes up off of the seat. is this a power lifting technique or just cheating so that they can think to themselves "thats right bitch, i just did that much weight!". The reason I bring it up is because I see more of the bigger, best built guys in my gym doing this, and I didn't know if this serves a purpose or not.

ASS must stay on bench, otherwise you are not benching, you are pelvicly-thrusting the bar.
What some ppl do raise is raise their rib cage slightly, forming an arch in their backs which adds support and decreases the distance that one must carry the weight for. This is completely legal. Remember that the ass remains planted on the bench, and the legs, firmly placed on the ground.

personally i think it's a lack of technique,

the bench press starts with the legs - leg drive (i'm still working hard on getting it right)
when my set up for the bench press isn't 100% tight, i.e. if my shoulders aren't locked in tight and my upper body isn't buried in tight into the bench and my feet set up is slightly off the mark my leg drive will _not_ drive me into the bench and generate force off the chest but drive my ass off the bench,

however, when i'm getting it right (at least when i think i do), i can successfully 'press myself away from the bar and into the bench'

marc bartley doing something like 500 raw for 4 reps after a 675 board press, very impressive and interesting technique in my humble opinion

i understand the concept of arching the back for purposes of powerlifting, but i see so many guys bringing their asses off the bench. i would think it would burt your lower back by useing that for levitation.

damn. that is impressive. but hes raising his ass too in this one. thats what i mean. i see guys always doing this. this is a perfect example. would loading the bar up like marc in this video and using your back and legs for drive increase the size of your chest and strength? i can see this guys a beast, but i wonder how his lower back feels after something like that.
