People don't communicate anymore

New member
I'm out for dinner with a friend and there was a middle aged couple sitting near us. Probably said about ten words to each other and spent a lot of their time texting or whatever with their blackberries. The woman was hawt too.

I can't imagine a day when I'm out for dinner with my partner and we're texting other people together.

The vocabulary of an average college student today is about 10% of that of an average college student in the early 1900's.

I can. Unless you're insane or brilliant (very few of either), chances are the conversational topics (above and beyond horrific monotonous small talk) eventually run low in a long-term relationship. We've all seen it happen.

I guess I just hope it never happens.

And you're right about college students. They can't spell, write, or talk in coherent words anymore it seems. Everything is slang.

That is sad. I would rather go alone and evesdrop on the next table than not talk to the person sitting across from me. Maybe they were texting eachother, LOL!

I'd explain the root causes of the decline of quality in society but they would probably be deemed too offensive.

Funny, take away accountability and the right to criticize......and nothing will ever improve. Where we're at, where we're goin.

May I also throw in that "communicate" does not mean "talk". I see PLENTY of people "talking" constantly but not much is actually being communicated.

Most people "communicate" as if they were writing in their diaries. blah blah blah blah

Much of our communication is non-verbal...looking at each other like, "let's get outta here, where we can really talk"

I will admit that when my husband and I go out to dinner we don't really partake in a lot of general chit-chat either. It's kind of boring. Our really good communication happens at home. I'm sure we look really boring when we go out. Now, me and my chick friends...that's a whole nother ballgame. Nobody can get a word in and we like it like that.

Good question. I'm sure there are a vast number of different reasons. Ever read a book published in the 1800's or earlier? The difference in language is dramatic.

Personally, I like to blame it all on text messaging. OMG hi 2 u!1

I agree. Thats why I think sometimes that relationships are doom to end after about 7 years. Shit usually gets stale.

They have changed the "7 year itch" to the "5 year Bitch".

Seriously!

More women are working, and have access to the net.

So, they have more chances to have guys kissing their ass and meet old bf's.

That doesn't happen with my S.O. and I. It drives me absolutely mad when my friend does it. All the fucking time, he just starts texting mid thought, mid conversation, etc. I want his head.

Drives me buts too how people don't care who hears/sees what they are doing anymore either. Like when the annoying bitch on the phone in a lineup somewhere is yapping at the top of her lungs.

Today on the subway I stood behind a guy using his Blackberry and he was writing an email I could clearly see about a deal that had just fallen through. Possible sensitive information and he didn't care at all who could read it.

I might get banned. :worried: I'd certainly end up pissing more than a few people off I'd imagine. I'm tired now though; maybe I'll write up something tomorrow or in the near future.
