Paypal issues

Well-known member
I have been selling on ebay for quite some time now and am very proficient with Paypal. Recently, I have been selling a good amount of my custom car parts, priced at $99.99 for each set.

For those of you who care, I make silicone hose sets for certain intake manifold applications. Most of the stock rubber connectors I replace are obsolete from the company, which means I hold a monopoly on the market.

A few months ago, Paypal limited my account for no particular reason whatsoever. Nobody filed a complaint or for a refund. They sent me a checklist of items to complete. Here is what they had me do:

1. Fax them business information - how much I make yearly from Paypal sales (wtf is this all about??)
2. Send them contact information about my suppliers
3. Confirm my home address (I had no problem with this at all)
4. Provide proof of shipping for my last couple sales

Now, could this be tax related? Is Paypal required to report our earnings to the government? This is total bullshit. Some of the parts I make I deliver in person at car shows. How can I prove shipping on that? Luckily I had tracking numbers handy, but I had some money locked in my account that I couldn't withdraw without providing Turdpal this information. How can they do this?

No. This was on my account after logging in, definitely not a scam.

they're famous for pulling that one out of the blue......i wouldn't bother with them and i certainly wouldn't be sending them personal information

paypal are part of ebay so for tax purposes trading and accepting money through the same company isn't a good idea to me although everyone uses them

could you not set up your own merchant account with another e-money system?

Thanks JC.

It's almost impossible not to send Paypal personal information while opening up an account. They need to be secure as possible, and that means having information such as address, drivers license, SS#, phone numbers, etc, necessary to have on file. Paypal has many flaws, but it is the easiest and most popular way to send/receive money online. I could open up a merchant account and receive direct credit card payments, but customers feel secure sending money through Paypal. I hope another e-payment company comes out soon. Paypal and ebay fees are starting to get out of control.

dude there's already plenty of e-payment systems out there, moneybookers, egold etc...what would be better though is to set up a merchant account with a local ecommerce company so you can forward a direct link to your customers enabling them to pay by credit card whilst also giving you a face to deal with should any problem arrise

yeah, 30$ to start an auction and 30$ when its over (thats for selling cars and bikes). Plus there is a lot of scamers and idiots. Last year I was selling a bike and had "Buy it now" option. Some idioty clicked on over 200 or something auctions that had that option. The scamers sell R1's or Hayabusas or other expensive bikes like that dirt cheap. When you contact them you get allmost the same e-mail answer back: the bike is in England (Bulgaria, Greece, France), made for USA market and they have a friend at Western Union, so they want you to send the money on someone alses name (not theirs), for so called security purposes - just tell them the #
Its idiotic and getting scary. I know I'm never gonna put "Buy it now" option ever again

I heard Paypal was very IRS friendly. They do this shit with US sellers because they wanna keep Uncle Sam happy. Same as Ebay going down on me for selling gun parts even if canadian laws are more gun-friendly when it comes to import/export than yours. I had the same issues with Paypal. They asked me all kind of stuff on my gun sells but I bsically told them to fuck off since I'm a licensed sellers according to the Firearms Act. Haven't heard from these bastards since. But honestly, I may just drop Paypal. Too much drama for me...

Thanks Manny, but I'd like to know how you got around giving them information? Did you call them...what did you say?

Told them to call the Canadian Firearms Center and deal with it. I'm in no way required to provide my sells, client's list or whatever else. On top of that, it's pretty clear in our laws that I can sell any Firearms part or even a firearm itself to any US citizen with the proper import papers from the State Department. But Ebay/Paypal seem to follow Kalifornia's laws...

I dont know much about Paypal, but props to you Swole i have heard good things of your kits I know some people who have purchased them from my other car forums.

I already sent them the information, but next time around I won't be as compliant. Ebay holds a HUGE monopoly of the online marketplace and having recently joined with Paypal makes it extremely difficult for other online payment companies to grow.

I think using a good old merchant account with a CC company is probably the best thing to do.
