Part of my left hand is numb!!!!

Lumberg

New member
Hey I was deadlifting yesterday with straps. I was doing medium weight, 315 for reps, and after the first set it felt like the straps were digging into my wrists a little more than normal and the back of my left hand was numb but I just sucked it up and kept going. However 18 hours later the area behind the middle and index finger are still numb. I don't really notice it until I move it or touch it.

Should I be nervous? It seems to have improved a little bit since onset but maybe only like 20%.

As long as you see regular improvement, then the nerve damage is healing. If you go a week without change or it gets worse, see your doc. You may need referral to chiropractor or neurologist.

Chiropractor??? haha. if it is only the nail side of the hand and only the the most distal part of pointer and middle finger (past the last finger joint) then it is a radial nerve neuropraxia. Meaning you stretched the nerve and it will heala in time as long as you give it rest.

ps. nerve function creeps back slowly. about 1mm per day to be exact.

Actually the area that is numb is the back of my hand from my second knuckle to the wrist bone, not the ends of my fingers. And in the back of my hand the area encompasses the area over the tendons that lead to my ring finger.

So does this mean that I have damaged or even severed a nerve?!?!?

Am I fucked as far as deadlifting with a strap is concerned?

Straps are for pussies? lol, ok... You can think what you want, But I know that shrugging 150lb Dumbbells is hard as shit because my hands cant grip the weight without straps... so since my hands cant grip the weight, i am suppose to rob my traps, or any muscle group for that matter, from working out? Like i said, think what you want...

That's one way to look at it...but another is that maybe you should work on your forearms and be able to grip the weight instead of relying on straps. If you can't hold the weight, you probably shouldn't be lifting it. I'm not totally against straps, but you shouldn't depend on them.

I am also against straps if you can't hold it you should not be lifting it and as far as shrugs for traps use the smith machine if you can't hold enough weight on the dumbells. Well as for your problem you should see a chiropractor I had the same thing once and it was a pinched nerve. I went to the chiropractor for a few weeks and it went away.

I dont understand you guys, if you have small hands and grip is hard then you should not take advantage of the growth your muscles are capable of? wtf

If you have full range of motion and just some numbenss it is just as I said a stretched nerve "neuropraxia" and from what you are describing is classic median nerve neuropathy. A carpal tunnel syndrome.
Try this:
1. Ice the flexor side of the wrist 20 minutes for 3x/day.
2. Get an over the counter Carpal tunnel wrist splint and wear it as musch as poosible (particularly while sleeping)
3. Take 800mg of motrin 3x/day for 7 days. (as long as u dont have ulcers or kidney problems) This is more for tendon inflammation. the tendons in the carpal tunnel are prob inflammed
4. I would lay off the heavy wts for a couple weeks at the very least.
5. If after 2 -3 weeks it doesnt get better or gets worse
I would go to the an orthopod tell him how you have been treating it and see if he wants to get an EMG (its a nerve conduction study)

Good luck bro

yeah right....try shrugging close to 700lbs without them
then say that..........dipshit

it doesn't matter how small your hands are, as long as the ends of your fingers grip the underside of the dumbell or bar, you should be able to hold it as long as your forearms can handle it. If you cannot grip a lot of weight, work on forearms a bit more.

You will be fine, just go easy on til it heals,

and also

jack off with your right hand for a while.

But seriously, you will be fine, it need rest and a break.

You are right young it is cutaneous radial nerve, I was misreading his post, good catch though! I dont think I would recommend treating it any diffferent though.

yep...i do.........you can roll your eyes all you want, but i love doing heavy shrugs:p

I don't doubt the fact that you can shrug the 700 pounds...but since the traps are not that strong of a muscle, I doubt you are using correct form. I realize that there are other muscles involved, but not muscles that can lift 700 pounds.

I will have to go back to my previous training split and do the deadlifts with my penis. I can lift 700 pounds with my penis you know.

No, wait, I just added it up. It's actually seventeen pounds. Whew! That explains a lot.

And don't worry, I am right handed. Though if the numbness were more severe I could practice the stranger.

hmmmm.....i cant help thinking that was a subtle shot at me

Just wanted to update. The numbness continues to subside very slowly but now if I touch the area behind my thumb (the inside side of my wrist) I get an unpleasant tingling sensation, kind of like hitting my funny bone. Sucks.
