Packing for vacation/holiday

When you guys pack for a trip how much stuff do you take? I am going to Europe for 16 days and trying to figure out how to plan for it. Last year my friend and I went for nine days - Each of us taking a carry-on with our "good" clothes and sharing one big checked in bag with toiletries, and everything else. I was thinking this year of just buying one big bag to check and bring a backpack to carry my important stuff.

a way to pack lots less is to make all your outfits in one color family (like black or some other neutral and then just pack shirts of different colors to add some color. That way you don't have to pack tons of shoes, etc and everything mixes and matches.

Going first so not too worried about that - Seems like to long to have to figure out in advance.
