Hi there, you ol' codger. It's me Gramps. Let's have a walker race. :)

BTW... you were right on the over 40 discussions.

Here's one for you... have you changed diet as you've aged? I find I have to completely cut out simple carbs and most fats just to keep from gaining weight. I don't train as much cardio/ endurance anymore or at least since 40. Metabolism is slower.

Also... what do you do for cardio? I find I can't run much distance anymore and even training too hard in the dojo makes the joints hurt. I use Chrodroitin Glucosamine... it helps but not 100%.

layinback here......over 40 and happy to be here. ( shit, happy to be anywhere!)

i'd love to see an over 40 forum. digimon, MM69, blueta2 etc.... love 'em all

LOL!!! :)

yep, that celltech creatine really does put 7 lb's of lean mass on ya in 7 days

Young at heart here too but body just doesn't bounce back the way it used to. I'm 43 and use glucosamine and l-glutamine. It's summer and haven't been at gym nearly enough. Discouraging.

There is a product out called - Super Cissus. I consider it a miracle drug.
It is OTC and has proven to be effective in strengthening Joints, Tendons, Etc. I take in combo with Gluc/ Condro/ MSM. I have zero joint pain, even when pressing over 300 pounds. google for best prices. TRY IT!
Of course Deca is a great joint lubricator. 150mg/wk when really help your joints feel better.

Try Cissus..If it doesn't help in 30 days, I'll pay you for the cost of the bottle !!!

Deca definately works, RW. But IT IS a steroid....

Question about cycle

Im over 40 thinking about my third cycle. Wieght 220, bf 16%, bench 300 or so (down a little, lost 10lbs) dead around 425. Would like to cut up and retain as much muscle and strenght as possible. shooting for 12% bf. how does 500 test e ew, 300 deca ew (have sore joints), and 600 eq for 12 weeks sound. Maybe take a two week break in middle for HCG. How about adding 40mg dbol ed for first 4 weeks (if my diets clean dbol make my veins pop!)?

My diet would be right around maintenence +400. Wieght program madcows 5x5 + 2 half hour interval training a week and one long 4-5 mile hike on weekend.

I may have to try those. No serious problems with joints but it takes longer than I would like to recover from nagging injuries like jammed fingers from basketball and sore wrists from taking a fall while roller blading. Might help.

Eq takes about 10-12 weeks to get going but is a great drug for maintaining lean muscle mass & vascularity. Do your Hcg beginning a few days after your first shot of Test & ending a week after your last shot & before PCT. 100iu ed. Dont stop in the middle of your cycle to do Hcg. Dbol would be good to kickstart your cycle & a taper out at the end of your 4 weeks is a good option to help keep those gains in place. May need an AI on hand like Arimidex for estrogen issues.

If you want to cut. I would start with diet. Go with a low carb, high protein
diet with lots of good EFA's That plus am cardio will shed some fat. Your 5 X 5 lifting routine is ideal for maintaining muscle mass. I think if you simply cut carbs down to steamed veggies and oatmeal only. You will see the results you seek. Try HIIT cardio first thing before breakfast.
Gear looks good as long as Dbol doesn't make you retain water. I would opt for Anavar instead. Start your HCG at week 3 of your cycle 500iu's split twice a week. Have some adex or aromasin on hand, but unless you are gyno prone use sparingly. Lastley get some cabergoline for the Deca. Helps with Prolactin build up, and keeps you horny.

Well then HC lets kick it in the gutz!! I would like to say for me age is absolutely no barrier to my BBing goals. I'm 45lbs heavier than when I was 35, I can lift around 30% more weight for more reps, I'm more defined, harder & leaner. Ok I take a few "sups" but I try to keep healthy & looking good. Age is only a number to me. I believe my training & the BBing lifestyle has slowed down the aging process, if not turned it around. Your thoughts guys?

I agree, totally.

I am bigger, stronger, leaner (body fat), harder, more vascular, more focused and disciplined in my lifting at 51, then I was at 35.
I take alot of supps, too. But WTF... they work!

That makes 3 of us. I did not even start getting serious about lifting until 40 and only understood/ started training right/ eating right to get bigger at 45. Supps do help. Before 40, I trained for endurance and flexibility to support other sports.

There is no reason to get old before you are good and ready. My mom and stepdad are in their mid 70's. They still ski, snowshoe, iceskate, swim, ride bicycle, hike, sail and golf. They are very active and show no signs of slowing down. They take lots of supps and eat very organic, low fat, high protein.

I'm new here too @43 yrs old. I'm about 21 minutes on the 5k run. I'm going to do some distance hopefully by Februrary at do the 26.2 marathon in Austin, Tx.

On the flip side I'm still beating my peers, both young and old in tennis and lifting.

So this glucosamine is good stuff? I've read up on it and it sounds good. how long do you take until you notice pain subsides? i get a dull ache in my left knee from time to time.

Takes about a month for the chrondroitin glucosamine to kick in. It does not work for everyone but worth a try.

One of my business partners is a competive tri-athlete in New England and has travelled quite a bit to run marathons. He's 54. Age is not a barrier.

So I Benched 345 WITHOUT Tren. Just good ol' Test and Var.

Record is 355 - ON Tren. 1RM. I'm going to break thru that 1RM, GODAMIT!

Goal is 375. Then 400..... BFD!!!.... I'm only 51.

EFA's are useful as well. I use flaxseed oil. Im trying a product containing hydrolyzed collegen 500mg, glucosamine sulphate 200mg & tumeric powder 50mg. Cant tell yet if ok & on winny inj so joints & tendons are squeeking like an old door.

That is good to know. I'm taking a good dose of fish oil daily. I'm also using a soft track at the high school for my lactic threshold training and interval training. I do one long run on the streets per week but I have Nike Air Max shoes which really helps absorb the shock.

I've had a few family members tell me that they had nagging pain disappear over night by taking "acai berry" juice. I began drinking some daily once I picked up the running gig just as a preventive for joint pain. Have not had a day where pain kept me inside so far. Not sure if I can credit the acai juice though.

New PR today! 3-miles in 21:01. I'm 5'11" and 184. Not bad for someone with slightly higher than optimal BMI.

on 375 bench do you actually touch your chest and pause or go to parallel to protect your shoulder. Either is great just curious!

Haven't hit 375 .... YET! ....355 my best 1 Rep Max.

I did do 2 1/2 @ 325 today.... I had a spotter!

Yes. I lift off by myself, come all the way down and touch chest and lock out.

Also, my hands are only 32 inches apart. (thumb and fore-finger)

NO BULLSHIT SHIRT - WITH A 4 FEET WIDE GRIP AND A 5 INCH PRESS.

I could do 475 under those conditions.

375 is my one rep max. I don't always get it reliably yet. I do get 365 reliably. I do a simple tap/ touch on chest and full lock out. I don't wear anything for benching and do my own lift off.

This description is from DaveTSI in the weightlifting forum in a thread on shoulder pain while benching. Thought it would help us here too.

"ok try this next time you bench and see how it feels on your shoulders. Unrack the bar and start in your normal position. When you start your descent you break you elbows first, flaring them outwards. When you reach about 2/3-3/4 of the way down you will start tucking your elbows down towards your feet. This naturally starts the bar down on a lower groove towards your sternum. 1/4-1/2 way down try to flare your lats to transfer the pressure of the weight from your chest/shoulders to your back.... yes i said your back. if you do it correctly you will learn how to bench with your back, it is the correct way to benchpress and alleviates much of the pressure traditional BP places on the joints. Aim to touch your chest at or just below your sternum, pause for a moment and explode off your chest with your back (again feel the lats flaring out). Groove on the way back is the same as the way down, 3/4 of the way up flare your elbows back out and lockout with the triceps."

Very Nice, RW ! That's alot of weight for a guy a half a century old. LOL!

You are WAY bigger and WAY stronger then me. I'm 5'10", 200lbs, 11-12% BF.

400 is the magic number. That one is probably a year away for me.

Thanks HC. At 41 pounds heavier, you are stronger pound for pound. We all work with what we got and do the best we can.

That 4 plate lift is probably 9mos to a year for me too. Gains are slow at this stage unless I got a lot of help. I pushed the deadlift for a new PR last night and now my arm is hurt.

It's a lifestyle that keeps you together as you age. You've already committed to a fit, healthy lifestyle. As long as you keep your eye on being your best in all aspects of your life, maintain balance between the various aspects of your life, and keep a positive attitude then you will achieve this goal and many others in your life.

Oh... and I'm an ugly bastard. :)

So ... 4 "cookies" it is! Damn that's alot of weight!

Agree on the lifestyle habits. I used to be a fucking wildman. The 70's and 80's are kind of a blur....

It really was Sex, Drugs, and Rock N Roll. And lots of booze.

Now, and for almost 10 years: I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, eat shit food, gamble, or chase women................. Been there - Done that.

That shit will eventually take ANYONE out. I'm not saying you can't do it,
it's a free country....But at some point you have to leave the party.

Agreed... 4 cookies for both of us by June of 2009. It is a lot of weight for us old men.

Totally agree re: gotta leave the party. It's America and one has the right to choose but some choices preclude others. The party lifestyle precludes a long healthy strong life. I live very clean now and love it. I feel so much more on my game now... every sense is sharper.

65 on August 20th.
I found that I would respond to HRT and cycles at any age and get terrific results. Not FLEX mag cover, but head turning size and cuts. I was mistaken to be many years younger.

My workouts were as long and intense as I wanted with weights used higher than in my 20's and 30's. I even got results with the Yates approach.

But now .... arthritis has finally gotten to me after all these years of squats and presses. I'm getting repaired soon and will be taking a more moderate approach with a slimmer body. Probably in the 180-190 range rather than the 230-240 range.

DIET and RECOVERY are very important. With a strong underlying foundation of health as measured by blood testing results, bone density, and body fat, you can still train and get great results. And aas and HGH simply adds to it.

Major Props Lion! 65 and still going. I will have to watch the joints but I want o be just as active as you. I posted before that my mom and step-dad are in their mid 70s and still swim, bike, raquetball, ski, sail etc.

40, 50, 60, 70 years old is not a death sentence. They are just numbers. You really are as old as you feel.... and look. :)

I'm over 40....44

Still got all my hair, weigh 225, 10.5% body fat now, and recently was able to bench 345 1 rep. Not bad for an old man.

The chics dig me, and I don't have a problem with attracting and dating girls half my age. Mid life crisis? Who needs that when you can have mid life parties?

I'm livin the frat house life at twice the age. LOL

Nice bro! 44 is when I gave up all the "shit." Booze, drugs, nicotine, eatting garbage. Not saying anyone has to, but in the words of the late Stevie Ray Vaughn, "You think you can stay at the party forever.... but you can't!". Sounds like you're having fun, so live it up.

Mr Db... you are a curmudgeon. 52 is ancient. :) Good to have voices of maturity here. We have a set of life experiences, goals, and expectations that is different from the young folks.

Are there any "issues" that you've noted as you've gotten older and keep training? I was talking to a 51 year old who was working out with his 26 year old son at the gym last night. The father was complaining of joint pain and we discussed Chondroitin/ Glucosamine. The son was giving the father shit for eating a bolagna sandwich before coming to the gym.

Mostly I just have to watch out for adequate recovery times and avoid injury. Once/week per body part seems to work for me.

I don't have chronic joint pain (yet) but when I've gone through difficult phases, glucosamine/chondroitin did nothing for me.

I've had pretty good luck with Cond/Gluc/MSM.
Try CISSUS in tanden with that combo.

ahhh, so is this a dead thread now?

Im no longer a teenager either. I didnt start exercising regularly until I was 30. Im glad I started and stayed with it, I cant imagine what Id look and feel like if I hadnt. That includes taking supplements and creatine as needed as well as staying up to date on supplement advances.
