Other gym stories

I read Jay's post and I can understand where he is coming from. I am the only powerlifer in my gym. I am a small guy approx 185lbs. So obviously the gym rats freak at the weight I do. I keep telling them that there are thosands of powerlifters out there that do so much more and I am nothing.
After a heavy bench I overheard a guy say to his friend that I can only do heavy weights for singles or low reps. When they ask what can you bench?? they than ask how many times. They seem to be more impressed with a high rep set of 315 than a single with 500. It is a weird mindset that I don't understand.
They said I have no endurance. The guy was proud that he could do 225 for 12 reps. He was bragging and figured this was an impressive feat. I got pissed. My down set the other day I did 315 for 16.
He walked away talking to his buddy ... I heard the word steroids.... I will never understand the bodybuilding mentality.
I don't want to start a flame war but is it a general rule that the average bodybuilder is so weak??? I see them in my gym screaming on every rep with 80lbs dumbells and the spotter is holding their elbows saying , "it's all you!!!"

The worst was I had to get a bb to spot me. I told him to just stand there, and if I Need help I will tell him to take it. The first rep , as soon as I grunted he touched the bar.. I freaked out.. I gave him shit but he didn't understand Why I have to do the weights on my own.. or they don't count. He probably thinks I was nuts.

It's times like that that I wish I can train in a westside like gym or even a home gym.
Commercial gyms seems to sap my motivation. Thank god for the few training partners I do have.

Sorry for the rant, but i am sure some of you guys have gone through this before.

Sorry for the long post....

Heres the thing i do repect Bodybuilders. Thats why i take offense when they say anyting. What they do is different from what we do. They know it , we know it. But the comparisons are weak when they try to say somthing for feeling weak as a baby. Your right though most bodybuilders are weak. But some , and i say some have attained incredable size that i cant see how they did it. So there is an art to that sport as is ours. Of course most bodybuilders you see do not know that art. SO in short if your in your gym and some wife beater wearing ripped guy (or should i say skinny) comes up and draws a comparison, realize he aint a bodybuilder. He is a weight traiiner, or body shaper! Untill you compete you are not a bodybuilder.

Triple H, I know this is a bit off topic, but a drop set of 315 for 16 is STRONG at any weight. At 185 it is insane!!! You have to be one of the strongest 181ers on the planet. Great work.

Well...it's just that EVERYONE wants to look good and feel like a good looking bodybuilder because they think that it is cool. Not a lot of people want to be involved in a strength sport because it is not considered the "cool" thing to do.

Big difference is...bodybuilding for the average joe schmo is just to impress onlookers. Powerlifting for most is something for their inner desire...big difference. We do this for us...

I think the big MF bodybuilders have a respect for power lifters and what we do. To borrow Jays term now, the "bodyshapers" ain't jack. I heard one telling two teen trainers the other day that training for power is worthless and they needed to shape their muscles to get the chicks. I am married so I guess I want to be strong to impress my wife by carrying the sofa by myself. By the way I work in the medical field (x-ray tech) and you guys would not believe the amount of shapers that suffer stupid injuries. I can tell stories if anyone is interested. Bottom line I hate shapers I love powerlifting I respect huge bodybuilders.

Don't get me wrong. I know some of the the pro bodybuilders are damn strong. I was talking about the average bodybuilder who competes. these guys that have massive arms and only use 30lbs db curls.. The muscles seem to inflate up but after these guys take a week or 2 off they deflate tremendously it seems..

Triple H

It is usually only the bodybuilders who are not worthy of the name who spend time running their mouths. Rather like the guy who can bench 500 in the gym (sure do here about a lot of them) but then cannot get 315 at a meet.

As far as competitive bodybuilders go, I am amazed at the discipline it takes to train at all while dieting as hard as they do. I know myself well enough to admit that I would cry like a bitch if I had to diet for sixteen weeks twice a year.

lmao thats great.

i have respect for body builders, body shapers or what ever you want to call them, as long as i see that they're improving, and not just bullshitting they're way around the gym taking up space. If they're trying, and making some progress, i respect them.

It is just that all of those guys in the gym THINK that they are bodybuilders. The big guys...OR those that compete...have all of my respect. Those that hit the treadmill and do some cable curls in their baggy spandex with a tan and gel in their hair...don't.

agree w/ B fold

I think I'm going to open a health club filled only with ab machines and treadmills. from what I've seen 95% of the people who "work out" wouldn't notice the difference anyway. also I'll charge double fees because I'll advertise it as a "cardioabdominal wellness fitnessplex." This might just work....

Hannibal and I have been training at my gym, while he's in town, and it's really a "fitness center." I busted in there with bands a few months ago for AR, and I was gawked at the whole time. Now, I've been going to this place since it opened 10 years ago, and EVERYONE knows me...they were still just dumbfounded.

Hannibal HATES it. Won't let him bring in a box for squats, chains, chalk, bars that aren't slick and pretty.

I started speed benching/squatting a couple weeks ago...they just weren't ready to see that.

...and FORGET pull thoughts. Those are TOO cutting edge.

"What is she doing putting that barbell in the corner and rowing with it?"

Hannibal is moving here in 2 days...then I will have him, and his garage, and Drowning Pool.

That is TOTAL gym Hell!!!!! No freakin' way could I train there...no freakin' way!!!! Almost as bas as that Golds I went to in Nashville with the large fountain in the front lobby. Killed me.

I worked out with Night Fly at her gym a few weeks back and there was a no gym bags rule...no drinks either. I snuck my chalk in though. Kills me...no bags or chalk...but they are all wearing thier powerlifting belts, tans, and doing 1/4 squats. Just makes me hate them all.

I love my garage and driveway. Not many people are tough enough to do it every week. No excuses!!! If we can't find a way...we build and make a way!!! No squat rack? We will just use some old steel drums. We just find a way to do it!!!

Sorry for the rant...

Ohhh...and this little pencil necked tanned gel haired frilly boy came over while I was benching and asked me how much I had on the bar. When was the last time you had to count the weights when you had 4 plates on each side of the bar? Duh!!!

He then, after finishing his dbell laterals with the 20's...began asking me questions about strongman with a very cocky attitude. He said that he would really like to get into that hard and heavy...then he went back to his dbell laterals and fixing his hair.

I go to a gym because if I worked out at home, I would get interupted every 5 mins to help with my son.

I gave BB a whirl, and thought it was too easy and too artificial. I can take any drug, and stack it with chicken breast, and look good. Big deal. I was so fed up at the Arnolds. Jill Mills was the best thing to hit that place. It was then that I decided that my years of being an athlete weren't over. It was time to move on.

So I put the protan away. :lmao:

Seriously, I meant it when I said I want it all: Strength, speed, stamina. BB would be fun to do on the side when lean enough, just to sing the praises of a PL physique.

Wait wait....sounds like another possible strongwoman candidate here:). STL may just have you hooked.:)

Even the PL stuff I'm doing engages all that. It's spring so I'm sprinting again. Parachutes, hills, stadiums, speed work, AR, ME; this is the best. It has purpose, other than looking F***able.

Reminds me alot of my HS and college sprinting days. The training is VERY similar. The focus and mind game make me practically nostalgic.

Let the bodies....

Next stop Elite...ladies first of course....DAMNIT!

Yep...when you see those women killing themselves at a strongman contest...you will be hooked.

Yeah that Strongwoman on ESPN2 was really cool. Is it gonna be on again? What about that little blonde babe who was trained by Virtanen, she could break a lot of records and a lot of hearts!

Jill Mills is by far the best that the world has to offer at the moment...by far the strongest too. I believe that they may not allow her to compete in the future...politics...but who knows.

Heini is a great person, very sweet, and very beautiful. She is a lot bigger in person than she seemed on television. She is very muscular and larger than the average man.

"Forearms and hand flexors- GRIP! if you can't hold the bar you won't be able to pull it off the floor and lock out with it so I would say these are really your most important muscles when it comes down to it. Unless you are a pansy and deadlift with straps like I see some bodybuilders doing. "

Jill Mills...

This chick is awesome...

I had my bod pod done with her at OSU over the Arnolds and attened a lecture she did for a class. I can't tell you how real she is. She's someone I'd like to train hard with, and then go have a beer. :)

Get this...she and I both weighed in at 175. She's 5'3 and 7% fat, and I (at the time) was 5'9'' and 23% fat!!!! She rocks...

She is real, she is down to earth, and she is very serious about her training. She is always willing to help others too...and a great competitor.

Yes, she is extremely ripped and much more attractive in person than in her photos. Look around her site...a lot.
